Article: Believe in Byron Buxton
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buxton’s floor is being constantly injured and hitting .170 which is a pretty low floor even with the defense he brings. -
Article: Twins Tales Up the Middle
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looking over the numbers for these guys, I can see why many would like the Twins to nab Iglesias. He should be able to back up his glove with a decent bat. I thought I would like Freddy Galvis as a sneaky candidate for SS/2B, but yikes, not that great of a bat and comes with lots of strikeouts. But I did find my "sneaky" candidate, and that's Daniel Descalso. His numbers are trending the right way and he's one of those guys who should be able to keep playing well through his early 30s. He'd make for a fine super utility guy, too.- 25 replies

Article: Offseason Blueprint: Hey Big Spenders!
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like most of the moves, but A) Corbin at $120M looks like a trap and B: I don't think the Reds trade Iglesias for just Cave and Gonsalves. I don't think they trade two years of a very good closer for a 4th OF and a probable AAAA starter. If they were going to trade Gonsalves, last year was the year to do it. I'd love to see the trio of Donaldson, J. Iglesias, and Gonzalez sign here, but that's basically 3 out of the top of the hitters group outside of a few big names. I highly, highly doubt they would be able to ink all three. I think including another trade for a hitter would make more sense. -
It was a joke about the ancient language of Latin. Unless we have some time traveling Romans on the roster in 2019...

Article: Twins Claim OF Michael Reed From Atlanta
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He may be a AAAA player, but he's 26 and coming off of a fantastic season at AAA. Seems like a fine depth move as a back-end of the roster pickup to me. He should basically take Zack Granite's roster spot, at least on the 40 man. -
Article: Twins Fans, Welcome to the Offseason
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wonder if the Twins could trade for Sonny Gray on the cheap and use him as a reliever, potentially a closer, maybe? I think that could be a sneaky good move. Don’t want Machado. We aren’t one player away from contention and I doubt he wants to play in Minnesota. -
Article: What if This is the Max for Kepler?
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kepler has done everything right... he's taking more walks, striking out less, getting better defensively, staying healthy for three straight seasons, but he's been a liability at the plate. I think the 2.6 WAR stat overrates him, as most of the value comes from his defense, which I don't think is worth as much as others do. It's so frustrating, because Max should be hitting better and he's had everything trend the right direction - I think they just have to wait another season and see if it all clicks. Between him, Sano, and Buxton, he'd be the most obvious candidate to break out due to the reasons I stated above. If he continues to stagnate around a .720 OPS, I think I'd rather see him platoon (if he regresses to the norm against LHPs) as the 4th OF and try somebody else in RF. Also, I fully agree with Vanimal, the low BABIP is becoming a trend. He hits weak flyballs that are easy to catch - that's going to keep the BABIP low. -
Gonna be honest here, when it comes to 1B, I really don't think defense should be much of a factor. The Twins badly needed somebody to power the offense from that spot and Morrison couldn't do it... plus with below-average bats like Buxton's and Kepler's in the lineup who are very good defensively, they could use a position to skimp on defense but pick up gains on offense. We haven't seen Sano much at 1B, how can we say for sure that he's "much better" at 3B? He grades below average according to most defensive metrics I've seen, so he'd have to be pretty terrible at every other position.

Interesting, I wonder if we will see Raley with the Twins next year. We already have some other young OFs like Cave and Wade, but maybe Raley could crack the 2019 roster at some point.

Article: Twins Bullpen Overview by the Numbers
Danchat replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, yeah, when you put up something like a 0.80 ERA in that stretch, it's going to be unsustainable. You'd hope he'd regress to a 2.00-3.00 ERA with more normal BABIP/HR numbers. -
That's how a lot of Twins fans view it, but I wonder if that's how the national media does? Recently there haven't been a lot of examples. Sure, people would cite "lowballing" Yu Darvish and being cheap by drafting Royce Lewis, but those opinions have aged poorly. To me it seems like a lot of it is fabricated.
-
He probably would have made the list if A) his second half wouldn't have dragged his stats down and his 2017 season was actually better offensively. It's hard to believe, but his OPS dropped from .836 to .803. I think a lot of us failed to realize how good Eddie's 2017 season was.

Haven't we learned our lesson on giving out deals like that one to Corbin? $110M?! Sure, he's a good starting pitcher, but I could see that dealing failing real fast. I'd be alright with signing Pollock, but looking at his track record I could easily see his trajectory starting to point downwards now that he'll be 31 next year. I would do that Kelvin Herrera deal, though. We could really use a good closer.

Article: Offseason Primer: Building a Badass Bullpen
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the FO just doesn’t see anything in him. They didn’t protect him for the rule 5 draft and didn’t give him a call up, so I think he’ll be pitching more somebody else next year. I guess they’re going with the ‘AAA stats don’t transition to mlb’ theory... hasn’t worked for Busenitz. -
Article: Twins Manager Paul Molitor Fired
Danchat replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wow, well, since Molitor still had 2 years on his contract left, I assumed he was safe because the Pohlads would protect him, but clearly it's Levine and Falvey's show here. My thoughts: This is a very good move. Molitor was not a good manager - his bullpen management was detrimental, his lineups favored veterans and couldn't adapt to trends (why did it take so long for Mauer to hit leadoff), and finally, but most importantly... the team was just so sloppy. So many outs left on base, so many stupid errors, and so many games where it didn't look like the team didn't show up. Molitor obviously had no control over factors like Polanco's suspension, Santana's injury, Buxton and Sano stinking it up, but his team just didn't look prepared out there. The defense suffered with largely the same cast out there. It's so weird to think that the Twins are finally going to look outside the organization for a manager... I have no idea who I want. I just want to see some new blood in here.- 284 replies

Article: MIN 2, CHW 1: Berrios Reaches 200 Ks
Danchat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There's plenty of room for 4 of them and injuries happen all the time, so there doesn't have to be a huge difference between the 3rd and 4th OF. -
3 times what he was paid? So Odorizzi's season was worth $18.9M? I've never liked the WAR to $$ model, if that's the one you're using. The final stats aren't that far off from what I was thinking, but the number of short starts and 20+ pitch innings from this guy were brutal IMO. He's part of the reason why the bullpen had to throw more innings, leading to the over-usage of several relievers.

But is a "decent" 5th SP worth about $8M that he's going to get in arbitration? They can afford it, but I feel like they could do better. I think we have enough 5th starters and enough depth, so I'd like to see if they can upgrade at one of those spots. He looks like the type of guy who will hit .220-230 with 30-35 HRs a season if he gets enough PAs. It depends if that's the type of guy you're looking for - it'd be quite the departure from Mauer's opposite approach.

Just wanted to throw in a few thoughts... Oliver Drake has done what he's needed to (2.70 ERA, 8.1 K/9), so he'll probably be on the team next year despite what we may want. I dunno about Matt Magill (4.00 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 1.8 HR/9), his numbers have been trending the wrong way and I'm not sure if he's going to hold up (5.21 FIP). Why has Andrew Vasquez only pitched 2 innings? Why did we start his clock early if we're not going to use him? I think if the Twins actually wanted Jake Reed, he'd be on the team now. He was eligible to be taken in the Rule 5 draft and the Twins didn't protect him, they didn't call him up after a great year at AAA... it's obvious they don't care about him. He should be on another team next season.

My responses: 1. (Overpay Buxton) Fine. 2. Definitely trade for a starter, I think I've had my fill of FA starters and that's not just from Lynn and Nolasco, it's from seeing other teams sign deals like for Darvish, Cobb, Chatwood (and those are just the recent ones). Not very often are you going to come out with a positive like the Arrieta deal... Corbin's stats look great but I'm feeling like it's a trap. Not going to give him a $100M+ deal. Try to do something like the Gerrit Cole trade. 3. Yes, definitely. Berrios should keep getting better and he hasn't had health problems. Give him more $$$ now for more control down the road. 4. It goes without saying. I don't think I can consider Sano a starting 3B anymore, Mauer might retire, and Adrianza better not be our starting 2B (or starting at any other position). 5. Well sure, but I'm afraid this FO is going to fill it up with more fodder. They added Belisle, Field, Petit, and other non-MLB caliber players, so what's stopping them from doing it again in 2019? I would make sure not to give up on the higher upside players (Curtiss and Mejia are hold-ons to me) but remove the chaff (Slegers, Duffey, Busenitz).
