  1. You are probably thinking more of the post hoc ergo proctor hoc fallacy. But the greatness of that is that anyone can claim it to prove whatever point they want to.
  2. This is about perfect. People can find something to complain about the Twins with every player they bring up. In my opinion, if Gibson makes it through the year basically healthy (a skipped start or two aside) I would see that as a job well done by the Twins development staff. Good, if somewhat inconsistent, production is a bonus and something that could really be built upon going forward. The Ks are low, but I think he is the type of pitcher that will steadily improve that with more time. He's no Blackburn.
  3. Good for them, I was certainly critical of leaving money on the table, but I certainly can't argue using it on a flyer like this guy. A little on the older side, but an intriguing prospect.
  4. Ted Williams?
  5. So you suggest the Twins trade someone that no other team wants?
  6. Would Gary Lucas count as someone brought in from outside the organization? Great article/interview.
  7. I don't really buy it. I suspect the Twins are asking for too much and the Orioles leaked this to help their negotiating position.
  8. Alex Guerrero and Erisbel Arruebarruena are two big money guys that come immediately to mind. There are lots of big money Cuban guys in the minors that are far from sure things to do anything. We remember the handful of guys that do well and ignore the big money guys who we never hear from again. Calling them the "safest gamble" is probably not accurate. I'm not saying don't sign anyone, but proper perspective is appropriate.
  9. Probably not as much money as you think. As evidenced by the competitive draft pick, they did receive revenue sharing money this year, which puts them in the bottom 12 of revenues of all teams. This is primarily driven by the fact their TV deal is so poor - less than 20% the value of the top 5-6 teams.
  10. I don't. I would like them to clean out much of the coaching staff, but I still think the can hire Molitor and not have it be same old same old old boys club. He is not young in years, but I would see him bringing new energy and enthusiasm, and he would be an inspired hire for pr reasons. Sadly, that might be the only way to get any type of enthusiasm going into next year.
  11. I expect they go big on a SP and add a corner bat and catcher in more modest deals. If they trade Fein, probably take a flyer on a RHRP. They would also sign a stopgap CF if possible, but they won't go 2 years and that player rarely exists in FA.
  12. Just don't see that amount of money making any difference for a team that would acquire them.
  13. How soon you forget 2011. Beyond that I would say they are about average myself, but that is splitting hairs. Certainly not unlucky.
  14. Probably dreaming. Berry is a solid return for 2 months of Suzuki. Just don't think higher ceiling arms get moved for position player rentals.
  15. Add Jim Bowden to the Suzuki to the O's bandwagon: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/the-gms-office/post/_/id/10018&ex_cid=InsiderTwitter_aleastobjectives
  16. Jim Bowden's idea: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/the-gms-office/post/_/id/10018&ex_cid=InsiderTwitter_aleastobjectives
  17. There are just so many ways to describe the Twins, and unlucky is very low on the list.
  18. Fryer is not even the worst catcher in mlb right now. Your obsession with him is hilarious. Not sure what you expect out of a third catcher providing AAA depth.
  19. What is your complaint about Steil? I would think he has done a great job.
  20. I'll agree with this. Texas is much more unlucky. The only thing I'll say about Twins and luck is that after three terrible years they were in a position to break out two top ten elite prospects this year and those plans were derailed. Not sure it would have had much impact on the record this year, but it sure would have been a more enjoyable product and there would have been a much more positive vibe around the team, with something to look forward to going into the offseason. All that is pushed back another year.
  21. I think posts like this underrate the job Ryan has done. It is completely focused on how taken got into the organization and nothing about development. When Ryan took over all the farm teams were a mess, he has installed a new Farm Director, new managers/coaches, and the organization on the minor league side has stabilized in a major way the last three years. Keep in mind, too, that while the farm system wasn't in great shape when Ryan left, there were definitely strong assets in the majors to work with (or trade) and those were more or less squandered with little to show for it long term.
  22. I suspect the majority of this is more narrative than reality, but they have lost control of the narrative and people are going to be looking for quotes and stories that confirm the narrative. These stories show some of the pitfalls of sudden, drastic change in any industry, especially one as conservative as baseball. If you come out with a certain attitude people are going to enjoy bringing you down. And the massive amounts of losses certainly don't help either.
  23. I agree on the last 3. Pino or Johnson could potentially be decent relievers, but they are probably part of a group of 5-6 guys that could fill the same role. So they could easily be DFAed if the roster space is needed.
  24. Darnell strikes me as the logical replacement for Duensing.
