  1. I'm not suggesting they need bodies, but they could have been more strategic, used the $200k plus the money from going over the cap (but not enough to lose a pick) and taken a harder sign, perhaps a high school arm with some upside. Probably doesn't work out long term, but it was an opportunity wasted to acquire more talent.
  2. Doogie just tweeted that the Twins didn't sign anyone else but are going to sign a non-drafted FA (anything over $100k would count against the cap). This means they left money on the table which is disappointing to say the least.
  3. I agree, definitely have legitimate concerns about the ligament. Will be interesting to see what Aiken does. If he goes to JC, could re-enter the draft as early as next year. Reports are that the Astros eventually offered $5 mil, which is a lot to pass up. Maybe he was so angry with them pulling the $6.5 that he said screw it, I'll take my chances.
  4. Astros sign none of the three. Wow.
  5. For the record, I agree with you on all positions but catcher. The fears of the minors can definitely be overstated. I would stick Santana at SS for the rest of the season and plan on him starting there opening day 2015. But the concerns for Santana always struck me as more consistency issues over tools issues (that is, no concerns about arm or range). That can play much better than say the arm concerns of Polanco.
  6. Catching is a different animal. And yes, players can come up and plug a position for a stretch of games. Parmelee played a game in CF and it didn't kill the Twins. But this analysis is based over a longer view where the shortcomings will be exposed.
  7. I don't think the handling of those three prove anything one way or the other, certainly not that it is the Twins MO to hold people down long after they have proven to be ready. There is plenty of good arguments for why Meyer and May are not up yet. If it was solely service time considerations keeping them down, they would be up by now. This, like many things, is more narrative than factual.
  8. I think you don't quite understand the role of Dave St. Peter in this front office. He has nothing to do with Terry Ryan having a job and he has nothing to do with baseball decisions.
  9. What's not right/fact?
  10. Fryer does have an option, but he is the better catcher and fills the role of once per week fine. It's not even clear if Herrmann is much of a catcher anymore.
  11. Concur with this. There are assumptions about Twins MO on call ups that can't be confirmed with evidence. I also agree with the second part - Sano will miss an entire year and still hasn't played a full year at AA, it would be really quick to get him up before at least half a season. Buxton will be interested, I still maintain that if he lights it up from now through spring training he will be up before July - especially with the clustermess of CF at the moment.
  12. They aren't against using young pitchers, they are against using multiple guys in the rotation at the start of the season that have less than a year of starting in the majors. I don't think they started a season with two of those guys in the opening day rotation with less than a full season, but I could be wrong. I'm quite sure DeVries and Hendricks were not Plan A going into the season. But you bring up a good point, May and Meyer could certainly start the season in the rotation, but the Twins rightly won't go into spring training with that being the plan.
  13. I was using "rookie" as shorthand for pitchers with less than a year in a mlb rotation.
  14. Scherzer would be nice but a pipe dream considering who the Twins would be bidding against. I'm thinking Shields.
  15. If they both came up today they wouldn't technically be rookies but I would consider them so for the point I am making. It puts excessive strain on a staff to have two guys without the innings built up in the same rotation to start the year. It is not about performance per se, but consistent ability to go 5-6 innings for 30+ starts, 180+ innings. That is really hard to do. Keep May in AAA, Pelfrey in bullpen, and Berrios close to ready in AA, and you are talking about legitimate quality depth to start the season. Do that, add a bat or two, have a prospect or two emerge and you are on to something.
  16. Free agent.
  17. Either extend Suzuki or sign a veteran backup to Pinto. Nothing sexy. May in AAA to start the season.
  18. May in AAA and Pelfrey in the pen.
  19. I would be very surprised if they break camp with two rookies in the rotation, recipe for problems all year. I think one makes it, one starts in the minors, and I don't think they are counting on Pelfrey to come back in anything other than a Deduno role.
  20. Starting pitcher, corner bat, catcher, extension for Dozier. I'm not sure if this will get them back to the same payroll as this season. I don't think it is misleading to point out they guaranteed over $90 million in new contracts last offseason. It is a very factual response to complaints they don't do anything. The Twins really shouldn't have to apologize for clearing out bad contracts and for having financial flexibility while waiting for young talent to emerge.
  21. It will be interesting to see how this thread clashes with the thread on Pohlad's comments. On one hand, we'll have plenty of people saying payroll will go down as younger players are brought in, while on the other hand plenty of people will say that Pohlad is cheap. After four years, they will probably get ripped no matter what they do.
  22. Don't all teams do this?
  23. Maybe, but he talked similarly going into the past offseason and the team dropped over $90 mil on free agents. I would expect similar spending this offseason, if not more. He let Ryan make the call on Gardy last year, maybe he won't this year.
  24. Are you sure on the first part?
