  1. I thought he had the talent to be a dominant pitcher, not just a slightly above average one, roll out a couple of 130 era+ seasons. But he is certainly good and I am impressed with his innings. EDIT: Looking closer at his numbers by season I think I underestimated Garza a little, he has been a little better than I thought. Never as a dominant as I expected, but plenty good.
  2. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/keith-law/post/_/id/2575/midseason-top-5-farm-systems?refresh=true Twins #2 behind the Cubs. No real surprise. Though it was interesting that he thinks there is a pretty big gap after #4.
  3. Of course, but the question is was he hampered by being rushed up on 2006. I also thought his results never quite matched his talent.
  4. Perkins and Pinto?
  5. Garza is an interesting comp. Rushed up before he developed command and secondary pitches and struggled. Sent down for half the season came up and was just OK. Actually never had a sub 4 fip until he was traded to the Cubs. I don't doubt Meyer would have some success, perhaps even an occasional dominant start, but he could be an ace. Two things that also need to be considered - he is running against an innings cap which complicates things. And also the historic success of tall pitchers - they just take longer.
  6. He just returned from a monthlong injury.
  7. I have answered this and I don't especially want to keep hijacking a Dozier thread, but I'll answer again. It has nothing to do with age, it has to do with the fact that Meyer has two specific things to work on - developing a passable third pitch and improving fastball command. If he can do that he is an ace. He is not there yet. If he is called up he will have some success and some failures, mlb hitters will learn how to exploit those two shortcomings. If he fails, I fear he will fall back on his stuff moreso than keep on developing the two things he needs to work on. I would personally love to see Meyer pitch for the Twins, sooner the better, it might even get me to a couple more games, but I can accept a patient approach here knowing the payoff might be bigger down the line. All this to say that despite your attempts to generalize this, my thoughts are unique to Meyer in this case.
  8. Doesn't there always have to be a college draftee to light up the Appy League and get everyone excited until you no longer hear from him in a year?
  9. Thanks for pointing that out. Here a link I found to the story. Boras was an agent for one of the three that became a free agent, as usual he was probably the most vocal in the media which is why I remembered as I did. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2519&dat=19960925&id=bYJeAAAAIBAJ&sjid=_mENAAAAIBAJ&pg=2686,3096008
  10. I've quite enjoyed the elaborate mating ritual. In public for all of us to see.
  11. So are the Twins cheap or are 28 other teams cheap as well. Surely he would have signed with the Twins if they offered the most money but no chance that happens once Mauer was moving to first. How many teams would lock up 1b and dh for that many years and dollars. Crazy talk.
  12. 35e
  13. Pino. Catch the excitement!
  14. Belcher was before my time but that Travis Lee situation was a sad affair. Boras really screwed the Twins. It did result in a rule change. Maybe this Aiken situation will do the same.
  15. I think they try to get people close to their ceilings before calling up. I stand by my analysis of Meyer. He would come up now and have some success, but his lack of a third pitch and less than perfect fastball command would be exploited by major leaguers. If he was to clean these two things up he would be an ace. I think it is reasonable, considering the current state of the team, to be patient and to have him work on them in a less stressful situation. Barring injury flaring up again, May will be up soon.
  16. Aren't the vast majority of mlb relievers failed starters?
  17. Yes. If they have the worst record this year, they would have the top two picks.
  18. Am I wrong in thinking that what Kluwe said to the strength and conditioning coach is actually *worse* than what Priefer said to Kluwe and the other special teamers?
  19. I think that the odds of trading Dozier are near 0%, but one possible trade that jumped out to me after thinking about it was the Cardinals. They could offer Taveras and Wong, Twins would have to add something else, perhaps Suzuki? The only way Dozier gets moved is if a 2b comes back - and the Twins previously drafted Wong.
  20. But the Cardinals might just as easily be a cautionary tale. All of the young arms that had so much success last year have either fallen back or gotten hurt this year. It is the vets that are carrying them so far.
  21. Only brilliant manager/pitching coaches in the mold of Gardy/Anderson can consistently put together effective bullpens out of scrap heap players.
  22. This is an historic blunder. There hasn't been a 1-1 that failed to sign since 1983. And it was so preventable.
  23. Assuming the beaning on the wrist is minor, I think Buxton gets up to AA pretty quick and does the Arizona Fall League. He won't start in the majors next year no matter what he does, but if he performs how he can I think he can he will up really quickly. With the best four years and all the hype of prospects the franchise is selling, if Buxton is killing it and they are still running out mediocrity in cf they can't afford to wait for super 2. And they won't.
  24. Fair enough, I can read stats too. You answered my May response, I also believe he would be up if he hadn't gotten hurt. Meyer is more complicated in my mind. He could come up and be successful, but there are concerns about his third pitch and his fastball command. This season isn't going anywhere, I think it makes sense to develop these two things in a lower stress environment. If he can improve these two things he is an ace. The key is preference if you want to development them in AAA or at the majors. I disagree the majors is better because he would get exposed, fall back more his two plus pitches, and not develop as well as he should. I assume you would disagree. I think he would have some success right now in the majors, and also some setbacks. I also think if the Twins were contenders he would be up in the bullpen right now. But they aren't so they have the luxury of patience.
  25. Great post. This complaint always struck me as so much narrative over any actual facts. I still think he should have been replaced two years ago, but not for this reason. And I actually think he is a fine manager and will probably get another job if he wants it. Just time for a change.
