  1. This makes sense, but I still see it more under the role of coaching or front office. I asked my question in the context of the comment that "it's a shame his teammates don't show the same enthusiasm". I'm not certain it is that critical for a player to concern themselves with this. I'm skeptical it has much to do with Perkins being a better pitcher, I more credit his 95 fastball and filthy slider.
  2. I'm not confused as much as curious on how applicable deep knowledge of stats are to players and their performance. And to be clear I am not against these stats in any way, they are really good to know for evaluation. I do think the overall knowledge of stats for the athletes specifically don't do much other than make tangible what is probably pretty intuitive for an athlete at this level. Though I suppose for more reflective types (like Perkins) it does provide positive reinforcement. I also think there can be value for confidence reasons if a specific player is not achieving results in traditional stats even if they feel they are pitching well (i.e. they are underperforming the underlying metrics). I see pitch f/x as more a scouting tool than a statistical tool (perhaps that is unfair) that should be used by coaches/front office to improve performance and produce scouting reports on opponents to develop game plans. Perhaps I am splitting hairs.
  3. Doesn't really answer the question. I fully expect Twins starters to undergo full preparation with a scouting report and plan of attack for every hitter every game. I would hope that the scouting report includes a detailed breakdown of the results each hitter has against each type of pitch in all zones and counts. But I still don't see what value knowing the numbers cited in the article have for a pitcher as he prepares to pitch.
  4. At a fundamental level, why does a player need to know this information? I understand why it is important to analyze for future performance/extensions/trades/etc, but I don't see what difference it makes when you are standing on the mound. The main possible use would be if a guy was underperforming his peripherals and it could be cited to boost his confidence but I suspect this is not what you have in mind when posting this.
  5. And they will. Schafer really isn't going to play all that much unless they really want to get Santana back to SS.
  6. As said, having a fifth guy that plays cf and near mlb ready seems unrealistic. Teams have to backfill roster depth all the time. In the past two years the Twins have graduated 2 of, ss, 2 1b/dh, 2 rp, 2 so and might do another so before the year is over. That is substantial talent going from the farm to the majors. They can't always fill every spot. The three main studs are still on the way. I think there has to be realistic expectations for the farm system. After all this it will still be #2. That's pretty amazing.
  7. I have many more questions about Rosario at this point than I do Hicks.
  8. I must admit this was not my first thought when watching and contemplating the game he played today.
  9. This is a really good point. Actually trying to build a roster that makes sense.
  10. Time for Hicks to develop and Tommy Milone.
  11. They need a backup cf and they don't want Hicks in the majors yet. A former highly regarded prospect is as good an option as anyone for this role. Worth a flyer to see if they can extract some value. Perhaps exactly the type of move a rebuilding team should do. One of my main complaints about the front office is they don't sign enough of these guys.
  12. The probably is that it will only be a year
  13. Fair enough, I'll shut up (for now).
  14. At the risk of starting yet another May/Meyer debate (which is absolutely not my intention), I was thinking about what the Twins could have closed the season with had Buxton and Sano not gotten hurt. This is what the lineup and pitching staff could have looked like this September. Buxton CF Dozier 2B Mauer 1B Sano 3B Plouffe LF Vargas DH Arcia RF Pinto/Suzuki C Santana SS Escobar, Nunez, Hicks, Parmelee also mixing in Rotation: Hughes, Gibson, Nolasco, Milone, May Pen: Perkins, Fein, Meyer, Pressly, Tonkin, Swarzak, Deduno, Duensing, Theilbar This would be a fun team to watch and actually have the chance to be somewhat competitive, and you could squint and think that, even with a somewhat weak rotation, they could go into next year with a shot to be a fringe contender. Buxton and Sano going down probably set the franchise back a year.
  15. Aside from protecting young players (especially arms) I think the Twins are doing pretty much everything they can to win. They just aren't an especially talented team, but should be more representative this year than the past three, especially when they call up May and Milone, and Mauer and Nolasco return from injury. I also expect Pinto, Tonkin and possibly Hicks to be recalled in September, and Meyer to be brought into the bullpen. So if nothing else there will actually be some decent young players to watch.
  16. That is also why I said mid 70s to high 60s, which would skew a little above 70.5, which is right in line with those predictions and more or less right in line with where they are headed. For better or worse, I just don't think their draft position will drop a whole lot based as much on how bad the other teams are than any drastic improvement by the Twins. Again, and this is admittedly a personal peeve in public discussion, but to take this information and say that "everyone" predicted they wouldn't draft that low is really contrary to the clear facts that were just cited. I just see that as overly pessimistic and inflammatory for the sake of being pessimistic and inflammatory. That can't be good for discussion, but I also admit this might just be a personal thing.
  17. I heard somewhere Suzuki recently signed an extension. Maybe we could start a thread on that.
  18. Isn't there a term for when you take the position of a few people on the extreme, make it seem like it's a main line position and then take a strong stance against it? I admit it is one of my peeves from meaningful debate. I think most people had the Twins from mid 70s to high 60s in wins. That is still more or less the pace. They could certainly collapse and fall into a top three pick, but that seriously underrates how bad some of the other teams are.
  19. I also think a part of this is increased time between innings for commercial breaks, something like 30 seconds, which can add 10 minutes or so to total length of game. People just like to whine about length of games, it has been that way for 100 years. People also like to say it is too slow for the modern audience but I think they are looking at it wrong. Baseball works very well in a two screen culture.
  20. "Everyone"
  21. I could imagine a similar trade where he trades primarily mlb pieces. Wasn't going to happen in previous scenario at the Dome.
  22. I think they have stumbled into a very good role for him and for the team. How is that anything other than fair?
  23. I wouldn't be opposed to a multiyear deal either. I would be surprised if Span only gets one year (or his option is declined). Bonifacio is the one guy who could get one year that I could get behind.
  24. I bet he goes 85-90 and then majors. It would be irresponsible to have a guy make his debut coming back from an injury and not fully built up.
  25. People talk about stopgap CFs like they are sitting there ready to be signed on one year deals. Have you seen the FA list? As usual, people are demanding Terry Ryan sign a guy that doesn't actually exist and will get angry when he doesn't do it. With that list, they might as well roll with Hicks and Santana. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/2015-mlb-free-agents.html
