Imagine the audacity of a manager letting a young fragile 25 year-old pitcher, with already 80 pitches after 7 and throwing a 2 hit shutout with only 8 Ks...... finish the game! What is he thinking, letting his young pitcher develop his stamina and have the opportunity to pitch a complete game and use 115 pitches, against a 1st place team? Can it possibly be worth it? I mean, does the confidence developed really mean anything? He will get a chance for a complete game shutout often, right? Note: Our guy, Jose Berrios, pitching a 2 hit shutout with 11Ks, was pulled after 7 innings and 83 pitches against the last place Marlins. He has gotten shelled twice, and struggled the other outing, since. Can confidence really be a thing?

Interesting that tonight's 14 hits in a 14-4 blowout.......... was one less than the 15 hits last night in the 6-4 loss.

Yup. That was what he was doing. Or at least, thinking he was doing. I still don't like it. Then Baldelli taxes Rogers arm. No regard for Rogers? It could also mean Berrios is not building the stamina he will need as a long term "ace". Do you think Verlander is letting you pull him at that point? Not without an annimated argument. The interview with Baldelli starts with the interviewer saying Berrios said he was tired, and they talked about it a bit later. Maybe that was it. I miss pitchers being studs and pitching complete games. They seem to be being taught that it is isn't something they should want to do.

Front Page: 2019 MLB Trade Deadline Review
h2oface replied to Cooper Carlson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess the window wasn't preceived as open, and it was determined the cold north wind was just blowing hard and making that howl that said....... "This is it. This is the time. Now." The culprit crack was filled with a couple of relief pitchers that were better than what we had, and there you have it. No great starter was added, and you can still see through the window. -

The no trade clause just means that Greinke would have to be involved in the trade discussions and/or approve the trade. Until I hear it from Greinke that he would have nixed a trade to the Twins, if there was one offered, I take this as just another writer trying to be somebody on twitter. Didn't Verlander have to approve the trade to Houston? Yes. No trade clauses just give the player final say. It never means that the list, if there is one, or even a full no-trade clause, means a trade can't happen. To say, or infer such, is a bit irresponsible, I think. "Verlander, 34, has a full no-trade clause and had to approve a deal to Houston, which he waited to do as negotiations played out, wanting to make an informed decision based on all options. ............ ........"We thought the deal was dead," Astros owner Jim Crane told MLB.com. "We had tried previously. He's a quality pitcher. I think he's excited to come. He was a little reluctant and eventually made the right decision. We got him for a couple of more years and the team's intact." https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-trade-for-pitcher-justin-verlander-c251757752- 206 replies

Front Page: Twins Acquire RHP Sam Dyson from Giants

I want a rematch with the Dodgers. I have been waiting since Koufax pitched 2 complete games in 3 days, game 7 on 2 days rest, and crushed my hope and dreams when I was 10 in 1965. I have been waiting a long time for it. And may as well go through the Yankees and Astros to get there. Be a champ by beating the best. That's the way to do it.- 206 replies

But Ramos was already in the mix, and not really a prospect anymore. Maybe he was officially by the ABs or something, but the certain to be catcher replacement for Mauer sooner than later, and to be used at third base too as he backed up until that happened. (I thought I had included him, but I guess not). So to me, he was already a MLB player, traded for Capps. But certainly a new up and comer. Does that count? I guess that could be a prospect trade though. -
"It's part of major league baseball and the way you use your staff as a whole. There are days that your starter is gonna go...regardless of how the start goes he's gonna go our there and give you x number of pitches......" Baldelli. So tired. So in the box. Not creative. Not thinking about the importance of the game. Not caring about the fans that paid to see the games. It is throwing the towel in in the 4th inning. This is how a team misses the division crown by one game, or the play offs by one game. It was irresponsible to not modify from the plan. Starters need protected too, and sometimes they don't have it, and it is time to get them out of there. And that decision cost this game. Not impressed. So no need to mansplain me about the pen. I understand. But be my pest if you must. I also understand that if he had modified from the "plan", that Smeltzer would have given them a chance to win. That is in the books. Time to be bold. One game at a time. Time for out of the box, because the box can be a trap.

But Cleveland wins those games. In this stretch since June 15, we have split with KC, lost a series to the White Sox, and got swept by the Mets! 3-6 right there against losing teams. So just because they are on the schedule, doesn't mean they are an automatic win. Our Twins really need to step up, and win a bunch of games, and get at least 30 games over .500. -

What trade of prospects has haunted this organization? I am not saying there isn't any, but I can't think of any, and if you know of one (some), I would sure like to be reminded of it. The trades that haunt this organization are trades of MLB players. Our guys. The fan's guys. The Twins. They haunt us from last year. Pressly. And I can think of Hicks. Morneau (I believe he went on to win a batting title). Escobar. Span. Gomez. I'm old enough to still be pissed about when they let Lyman Bostock go when I was 22 after the 1977 season (free agent cheaptitude, not a trade)! What are your peves? So.....Falvey, go get a really good one, or couple. A Starter. A Reliever. or two. It is Falvey's job to make the right choice, and not pick a dud. That is his job. Not mine. Don't ask me who they are. That is what he is paid to do. This is the window. It may not come for years again. if he doesn't...... it must mean he is a double agent for Cleveland, and not really working for us. (It's a conspiracy) -
Definitely hated the trade, and wish Hicks was still on the team. Horrible horrible trade. But....... I don't see Aaron Hicks on this list. Buxton's value is massive. And if he stays healthy and starts hitting consisently, which I think he will just like I thought Hicks would (and Gomez would), Buxton's value will be off the charts, and well past any dream of what Hicks could offer. http://twinsdaily.com/_/minnesota-twins-news/minnesota-twins/byron-buxtons-not-so-secret-value-r8135

No pitcher or batter or home team should just "get the calls" There is a simple solution, very simple and immediately available, to take the plate umpire's guessing or intentional or unintentional bias out of the equation. Just use the tech to call the correct balls and strikes. Very simple.

Harper now has inherited 33 runners, and after tonight's 2 gifts to his teammates, has allowed 16 of them to score. Why they had him come in to relieve Duffey makes no sense. 2 runners on and one in scoring position on second. Gregorius up, who should have been walked (was I the only one screaming at the screen to walk the scorching hot hitter to pitch to Sanchez), and sure enough, the double on the 72 mph hanging curve right down the middle, brings both runners home, and Sanchez was the easy third out, but 2 runs, and the lead, later. Baffling. 16 of 33 inherited runners have scored! Basically half! How many times before it stops? This is insanity to keep giving Harper the opportunities with runners on base. Still, this game was almost won by Kepler. Great catch by Hicks. (One of the worst trades by the Twins, ever). This is a hard one to swallow. Especially against the Yankees.

Hmmmmm. And Castro couldn't even catch easy pitches the other day against Oakland, and he is supposed to be a glove guy. I don't know if WAR is the final authority, or if the above is correct as I am using a third party's homework, but I am not of the opinion that Castro is outplaying Realmuto.... by even a slight margin. Infact, it looks like Realmuto is outplaying Castro by the considerable margin. -

Article: Buyer Beware: Avoiding a Chris Archer Trade
h2oface replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins sure would be a better team if they just resigned both of these guys instead of trading for mediocre (yup, mediocre) prospects that aren't even close to helping. We had the help right here, and Pressly even had another year, didn't he? Prospects, schmaspects. I want MLB players. Last years bonehead trades of real MLB players should be screaming at the FO. Now we are just looking for suckers like our FO was to get the same type of player we already had. -
Great discussion over the assignment of a win to the pitcher, eh? Especially since, in these days, so many claim that wins for a pitcher don't mean anything, and are worthless.

It was an interesting call by the official scorer, the same group of charity workers that decide hits so generously instead of errors. Thorpe's first inning was not good, in fact, just as lucky to not give up more than one run as Duffey's was to not give up any. How many fans were cringing to have Thorpe come out for the 7th inning after that scary 6th? Duffey got sooooo lucky after his first batter walk and the bonehead play to not be on the bag for the double play. Still, he didn't give up any runs, and inherited a runner. Thorpe gave up 4 hits, an earned run, let the lead close from 2 to one run with a horrible first inning that started clean, and left the game with a runner in scoring position he had just given up a double to. 2.2 innings to 1 inning. I don't know. I could go either way, but I think I give the win to Duffey, who pitched the 5th, came in with 2 runs in and one runner on, the momentum swinging "bigly", and got out of the inning without letting the inherited runner score, saving the all important 2 run lead. I would also be giving fielders a lot more errors and the batters less hits.

The rarely used assignment of the win to the relief pitcher deemed more effective gives Thorpe the win instead of Duffey, who got all three outs and was the pitcher that finished the 5th with the lead that was never relinquished. http://m.mlb.com/glossary/standard-stats/win
