Article: Week in Review: Holding Steady

Seattle comes into town with one more homer than the Twins (126 to 125), albeit with 5 more games played. Could be some balls flying out......- 45 replies

I am a believer in pre-game prep and consistency and ritual. I still see many greats practice one. Not so much a believer in the same socks or jock or hat, etc...... but the pregame prep probably did have a java script type of connection to his game day. I think it is about the ritual, not about what interupted it (as that seems to be what is ruffling peoples feathers and take on the initial comment). It is not the only thing, or even the main thing, but it is one thing. Actors use ritual, musicians, orators, etc .......... it was just an observation, as I read it, that the pre-game ritual was interupted.

Article: Craig Kimbrel and Risk Tolerance
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes! So why not make the same leap and take the plunge on Kimbrel, and let the staff help him discover new levels that make him even better than he has ever been, no? He already has the proven foundation, with just a half year in question. Sorry, I sound like it is still a possibility. This is probably something that would make more sense to say before he was signed by the Cubs instead of the Twins. I think the most absolute statement you made in your fine article was ... "Collectively, Twins fans are MAD." -
Article: Craig Kimbrel and Risk Tolerance
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think I read somewhere an astute sports writer called the players that came in the trade for Pressly mid-tier prospects. Have they changed overnight? "But from my view, they should be seeking to execute the same blueprint that landed Ryan Pressly in Houston last summer: trading mid-tier prospects for prime-aged relievers, ideally with an untapped strength, under multiple years of control." Mid-tier does about the same for me as the dreaded mediocre innings-eater. So the plan is to trade the prime-aged reliever we have and need, who's strengths have already been tapped and developed by our own team, for mid-tier prospects, and then hope someone will trade another like him that you hope might become that guy for the mid-tier prospects, or others similar to them, and see how it goes? I guess that is where we are now. Even if they get it done, it seems like a wash and a waste of time. I hope they do get it done. One can only move forward, now. But I am betting most teams will be asking for top prospects, instead of mid-tier, and the new guy won't be as good as Pressly is, even if the task is accomplished. -

Seems to me Pohlad's, with there cheaptitiude for years and fielding a poor product, owe it to the team and the fans to make up for it now. -

The Twins' leadership is at the head of baseball's evolution toward sophistication and analytical evaluation. I guess we just forget Houston exists. But from my view, they should be seeking to execute the same blueprint that landed Ryan Pressly in Houston last summer: trading mid-tier prospects for prime-aged relievers, ideally with an untapped strength, under multiple years of control. Instead of just keeping the pitcher they didn't need to trade. And who did they trade him to? Yup, Houston. Houston who got us to take mid-tier prospects.... not even top prospects for this years top reliever. The FO has done well with free agents this year. I don't think that Schoop has performed better than LeMahieu, but he has been very good. Cron and Perez have surprised..... so far. All of Paraker's advanced stats say what happened yesterday was bound to happen. But Morrison, Duke, Lynn, and Reed count too. Glad that is over. And they resigned Molitor, which was a huge mistake (and not in hindsite). I am giddy about how our team has done so far, and not denying that this FO may be the best we have had, with a chance to be even better, but I am not ready to anoint them as at the head of baseball's evolution toward sophistication and analytical evaluation. -
Hildenberger. Another AAA inning with a walk, a K, and a homer. Looks like even AAA isn't fooled anymore, either. Those are all some pretty horrible season ERAs in the Rochester box this game.

One season like that...... and you can be just so-so the next season, and apparently still be untouchable. And Larnach is playing in the same games and against the same pitchers Lewis is, and is doing so much better.

The only reason Baldellli is "spreading the load" (that's looks terrible) is because there is no closer on this team! To think just "put him in the mix" is not utilizing him to his talents. I like a well rested Kimbrel that could be in the post-season at mid-seaon form.... instead of on the last legs of his year.

Article: MIN 9, TB 7: Odorizzi Shines In Tampa Return
h2oface replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
After the Magill meltdown, Harper's 2/3 inherited runners scored (and he only needed one out) is hardly noticed in the end... but it is part of the "makeup" coming off the pen. True, very quirky play (and scorekeeper's rulings have been suspect for years)..... but a ball in play comes off of the pitch, his pitch, and ........... they all count.- 27 replies

Odorizzi. Can this last all the way through the World Series rematch with the Dodgers? Magill.... sigh. And to think.......Duffey was ready! Run differential for series..... -3. Record? 3-1 Run Differential. One of those somewhat meaningless stats, sometimes. A glamour stat. In the end, only one stat matters - the big W- 27 replies

The only one they can't redeem is the Phillies (and that was on the road, and the only 3 games against them for the season), as we get 3 at home against the Yankees to finally shake the monkey off.

I keep thinking Diaz is going to cost us a game or two. Holding Kepler at third base? Seems like he holds the guys with speed, and sends Cron and Astudillo. It hasn't really cost us yet, but I really don't care for his judgement. Way too conservative with the speedsters. Really impressive game is so many ways. Gibson bent, but didn't break. Key hits. Time to take the series 3-1 tomorrow. Castro is having a hell of a year so far.

Article: TB 14, MIN 3: Well … That Just Happened
h2oface replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Humbling. I missed the game and have to admit a bit of a shock when I checked in. I really don't see the faith in Littell at all. And there was even an attempt at making his performance sound acceptable in the article. Maybe Berrios can finally pitch well against Tampa Bay and win his first game against them tonight. Time for the Twins to redeem themselves by winning 3 in a row and take the 4 game series. We are only 9-10 against teams with records >.500. Time for that to start changing. -

Every team wants that shutdown bullpen. Even with a triumvirate of studs for the last 3 innings, things can and do go afoul. There was some good info in this article .... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/twins-go-bargain-shopping-reap-rewards.html Harper: Granted, regression for the soft-tossing Harper is likely on the way – it’ll be hard to maintain a .220 batting average on balls in play and an 85.2 percent stand rate, and perhaps even tougher for a fly ball-heavy hurler to continue limiting home runs. Nevertheless, one can’t quibble with the unexpected production he has given Minnesota to this stage. Parker: The 33-year-old Parker has been similarly effective through 17 1/3 innings, having registered a 1.04 ERA in an effort to prove the Angels were wrong in non-tendering him last November. Parker isn’t going to keep this up, as his .190 BABIP, 96.2 percent strand rate, uninspiring strikeout and walk rates (7.27 K/9, 3.63 BB/9), and FIP (3.63) indicate. And not in the article, but Rogers in touting a 1.41 WHIP and a .283 batting average against in 22.2 innings compared to a .95/.206 in 68.1 innings last year, and a career 1.20/.243. If he went down now, it would be career worsts for a season. They all have time to upgrade their lines, and they have been successful so far. But it is not the pen to rely on for the season, and it surely indicates that if this team is to get to and go deep in the playoffs, that the front office's work is just beginning in regards to fortifying this staff that we are all enjoying. And injuries really haven't happened..... yet.

Oh the paperwork! IL/DL can definitely be manipulated. It is amazing to watch the Dodgers juggle 7-8 starters around the IL. Paperwork? No problem. Overweight people will have knee problems. Not that others can't, but large overweight people have tons (ha) more. It looks like Pineda didn't take his off year to try to change that at all. CC and Pineda with suffer knee problems for the rest of their life, probably.

The pitch that the previous double resulted from was a pretty lame pitch, too, I would say even more of a miss right down the middle.... so I count 2. And Rodgers knew it. Just didn't have the control to start the inning. Not a biggy. There has to be something wrong with an offense that doesn't score a single run after the second inning, eh? Just because you have a pen that has held it's own so far, doesn't mean that one shouldn't look to improve, especially eyeing the post season needs. To do so would be irresponsible of the Front Office. As for personel to dump or hire, that is a whole other thread with countless propositions that can't possibly be done, or will never happen, by people who don't get paid to do it. It would be fun, though, and I am sure, not absent of massive participants.

Nothing typical about the fans here on TD. A diverse group of obsessed and dedicated fans, so many with insightful critical thinking, sardonic humor, and cagey takes. To analyze is not beating someone up. It that is what one gets from most of the discussion, perhaps they might just be a typical Twins fan.
