  1. I don't know how anyone could calculate that the ball Kepler "dropped" (no dive, kind of a lazy running leap/hop, plenty of space from the wall and not a particularly speedy run needed to get there, and the ball clearly hit the meat of his glove and he just didn't squeeze it....) had a 97% chance of being a hit. I would have called it an error. And the pitch that was hit? Total week meat with no movement right down the middle. Like ST batting practice. It was just one game for the 32 year old that was not competitively sought after in the off season. I worry about all pitchers like Colome in the closing or late inning role, and always feel they are lucky to get out of the innings they do. So I guess I will be worrying all season.......
  2. Yes, the rule. I agree. But Dobnak threw the pitches. 2 out of 3 were hit and the run is in and the game is over. Once you get the call, you have to perform. If we are saying that this is just what has to be expected of Dobnak when called upon.... well.... yikes. Then why call on him at all? Yes. A perfect storm of other circumstances. But the pitcher is also accountable. Always. I already said my piece about Colome. Too bad there was even a tenth inning. Pitchers and the pitches they throw always have a part of the results.
  3. Sure. Giving up the winning run on three pitches, 2 of which get hit, is just another fine bullpen performance outside of Colome. Contact pitcher is just what you need with a runner on second and no outs to start the 10th. 3 pitches and game over. A fine performance.
  4. Overweight soft tosser to close with a 3 run lead in the bottom of the ninth. Someone tell Colome that the season started. ST is over. I mean really, that cutter to Shaw at 89 was right down the pipe and no cut. Batting practice. And, for me, if the pitcher makes his own error, the runs are earned. He throws the ball away and gets a 0 for earned runs, when he is the problem. Hated the signing then, hate it more now. And Dobnak with a runner on second in the 10th. Wow. No Hader and 3 Ks for us. No no no. Gotta sign the spinner. That was truly a pathetic last two innings. And don't you just love the versatility of our out of position defense? But is it versatile, if they just are put on the field in a spot that they can't really play well? I know it is only one game. But what a bummer. Gonna be a long season. How about that Buxton homer?
  5. All that heralded outfield depth, and we are left with Cave, Garlick, ....... Astudillo, and Arraez - the latter 2 not even close to outfielders. That is some outfield depth, eh? It is what championship teams are made of.
  6. The Homers pick the Twins. 21-2! What would it have been without the Eloy injury, I wonder? I guess they had to pick the Twins, or be run out of town, eh?
  7. So, let's say Astudillo (or anyone, really) hits a solo homer, but also has a throwing error that gives up an unearned run (as happened in one ST game). Would that be scored costing us or helping the team, or a nothing burger? And if it is a nothing burger, is it beneficial to the team? I know you weren't addressing me, but I am just wanting to make sure when to give him all the credit he might deserve.
  8. Our adored FO is sure making this team old instead of young. And still Astudillo on the team. Damn. So..... Spring Training means nothing.... until you want it to arbitrarily mean something. I get it. But I don't get it. Yup. Same thing.
  9. Regardless of the price, I am not impressed that the "sturdy building block to serve as their bedrock" to supposedly get excited about for the long term...... is Dobnak. Steady as they come, eh? Except for the most recent month or so when he was totally figured out, bombed consistently, taken off the active roster and not even taken to the postseason.
  10. Isn't "the man" already at least 30?
  11. I didn't know at the time Happless would be after Maeda! I was goaded into it.
  12. You are so kind. I now totally despise him. He cost me $20. to a Braves fan friend. Maeda on the mound.... and then that crap. I bet he doesn't make it much past the all-star break, if not before. Those tools didn't get any sharper as the outing went on, if that was what he was doing. 38 and cooked.
  13. My bet is it's not COVID. It's 38 and Happless. Cringed at the signing. Still cringing. That was relentless and ugly. Still. Happless.
  14. If the team was treated equally as to ST performance - there wouldn't be many left to field a whole roster.
  15. I'm way past due on seeing home grown, home drafted, farm developed pitching wow the show. It is, after all, the calling card that Falvey (and Levine) came with. Talk talk talk.... when do we eat. How long is it going to take? This is now the 5th year..... 4 drafts. Must be soon, now, right? Lots of trades and free agents..... bring on the farm.
  16. When your opening day pitcher comes off a 2020 "making 12 starts and sporting a 5.35 ERA (5.70 xERA) and striking out 58 batters over 67.1 innings", your pitching staff is in a load of trouble.
  17. I always hate it when I see something like "who, by and large, has hit more like a center fielder", inferring, that center fielders aren't even expected to hit, and it is fine if they don't. When I think of center fielders, I think of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ken Griffey Jr, Mike Trout, Duke Snider, Joe Dimaggio.......... I could go on and on. Center fielders should hit, too.
  18. Rodgers was feasted on last short season, Robels even more. Duffey looks horrible this spring. Colome is trying to redeem himself after a horrible first outing. Yet......... folks are reveling in the potential of the bullpen. Well..... I hope they all find it by opening day, and become what people hope. I believe Baldelli. And I don't see a closer yet, anyway.
  19. He had that one appearance where all the damage happened. The others have been lights out. With that reasoning, we should release Colome (9.00 ERA, 4 earned with 7 hits in 4 innings, and one was a homer - they both have 7 strikeouts, but Waddell with 3.1 innings) for his first outing on March 3 and move on now. And Tyler Duffey would have no future anywhere. All his outings have been horrible.
  20. Are walks and hitting the ball hard "underlying stats"? Pretty in your face, and not underlying, from my perspective. I agree. Not controversial. And not underlying. A .222 average is not underlying, either. It is performance. I really look forward, and hope, for a season like 2019 from him. And not underlying, but obvious and flagrant.
  21. They are like the stats that show someone should have performed better than they actually did (or do).... so.... no?
  22. Yup - getting hits, the goal of every plate appearance, is soooooo overrated.
  23. Has underlying indicators ever scored any runs?
  24. I like your romantic imagery, I really do - however misguided it is. Your advert would be a lie. Have you ever driven for ride share? I have. Both Uber and Lyft to write about it. Cheap demanding riders. Folks too cheap to get a cab, and still don't tip well. In fact, most don't tip at all. They get in your car and act like they own it instead of they are lucky to get to ride in it for 1/4 to 1/5 the price of a cab. The Uber Driver, after expenses of paying their own maintanence, gas, and costs, make, if they are lucky, about $7. per hour, and get no benefits. The riders can rate drivers "not professional" and the platform wants you to be "professional". But get real. There is no training required, and drivers are just people that have a car and you don't or don't want to use it. The Uber Driver is not even close to the American Dream. It is an example of the system taking advantage of the product, the driver, and the driver's having no union to protect their rights or stand up for them. Not even close to the American Dream. Sad that many think it is. Before you call it "the epitome of the American Dream", you might want to take the drivers' seat for a month of 30-40 hours a week, and then see what you consider the truth.
  25. Tim Anderson, who said the Sox are “way more athletic” than their rival Twins and that the Sox are the best team in the American League. Now there is something for the locker room bulletin board all season.....
