  1. Looking forward to seeing Kepler and Berrios yet this year!!! Combine them with Buxton, Sano, Hicks, Rosario, May, Gibson and we're going to have some fun watching this team for the next few years!!! Love the starting pitcher depth!! Winning starts with starting pitching and when you can line up Hughes, Santana, May, Gibson, Berrios, maybe Nolassco, you have a good chance to win. No true aces but how many teams really do have an ace?? These guys will keep the Twins in most games, and they can still survive an injury or two with their depth. Hope Buxton stays healthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. Nice to read a commentary from someone who isn't ready to jump off the next bridge they see and that doesn't think that Terry Ryan is an imbecile.
  3. On the other hand competition is good. And don't forget Berrios. May the best five win. Good luck to Duffey tonight!!!
  4. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Veteran starters were signed to stop the losing/bleeding. Young starters get 'blocked'. Someone needs to get sacrificed, in this case May. It won't hurt him to spend a month or a year or two in the bullpen. Players transition back and forth from starting to relieving all the time. For the Twins its like a having a piggy bank in the bullpen, they can always break it open any time. Plus they need help NOW in the bullpen (fixing a popular TD complaint). Plus they get to use/try out one of their young starters. Win, win, win for the Twins.
  5. The one getting hurt the most by this would be May because it means the difference between a $4 million dollar salary as a reliever and a $14 million dollar salary some day as a starter. But if the Twins have plenty of other starting options and May becomes a shutdown reliever, and thats where they need him, too bad so sad Mr. May, you are now a reliever.
  6. The biggest problem the Twins have had the last couple of years has been the starting pitching, signing some of those veterans starters has allowed them to be competitive and in the wild-card race - and given them some 'excess' pitching to work with. Can you ever have too much pitching??!!! Then they have taken one of those excess starters - May - and plugged him into the bull pen -- hopefully solving a big bullpen problem. Now one of those young starters is getting a start -- and gaining some valuable experience. Twins management isn't as dumb and incompetent as posters make them out to be. These are men that have been in baseball all their lives!!! Just because they're not doing what YOU think they should do doesn't make them stupid. If they've have given away the farm at the trade deadline, no matter who they got, there would have been complaints. Its a no-win situation.
  7. Exactly!! Twins need bullpen help, posters here have been clamoring for it, May will fill the need while they are contending. The Twins have lots of other starters, and If the Twins fade out of contention May can be moved back to starting in Sept. or in spring training. It won't hurt him in the long term to be in the pen.
  8. It'll be 5 - or 10 - years before we know if this is a good trade. Mellow out folks!!! The sky isn't falling!!!
  9. I still think something will happen with Pelfrey, he won't be on this team at the end of the season, he'll get traded (for a minor prospect) sometime in August after passing thru waivers to some team that needs another starter. Also it won't hurt May's long-term development to spend a few weeks in the pen, in fact, the Twins may find that strikeout reliever that they've been looking for. A lot of TD posters have predicted the bullpen is where May would eventually end up anyway.
  10. Good article Seth!!! It strikes a nice balance between yes, it would be nice to acquire someone but its not the end of the world if the Twins do nothing. And points out that doing nothing means that the prospects the Twins have will have time to develop -- instead of playing for someone else!!!
  11. I agree, they were trying to win. And one feeds the other, winning keeps the money machine rolling.
  12. I think the Twins were hoping that he'd have a couple good starts and then they could trade him at the deadline to some sucker in need of a starter. Not going to happen now. Will be interesting to see what happens to him after July 31.
  13. Thats exactly why they went out and signed Nolasco and Santana, they knew that if they kept losing, attendance would keep dropping and they would sell a lot less $8 beers and $12 hotdogs.
  14. Thats pretty much the theme of this whole post, some posters think that trades have to be made just because the Twins are contending, and other posters think its foolish to throw away their draft picks now for a team that has a lot of holes. Personally I'm just going to enjoy the ride.
  15. So what do you think the Twins should do??
  16. In hindsight its easy to say it was a bad trade but I'm sure at the time Bill Smith thought it was a good trade - he was going for it. And thats what some TD posters are advocating, going for it, making some trades to strengthen SS, catcher, RP, because the Twins are in contention, the opportunity doesn't come along that often, etc. Thats why I brought up Ramos for Capps, you don't know whether a trade will be good or bad until later, any trade that Terry Ryan makes to go for it could be good - or bad.
  17. I didn't say you did, I was just bringing up Ramos for Capps as a bad example of what can happen if you 'go for it'.
  18. Can you say "Ramos for Capps"? Smith was going for it and we see how that worked out. And as far as being sellers, if it would have been up to a lot of people here on TD, Perkins would have been gone last year. At some point you have to decide that you have a core of players to build around. My opinion is get a relief pitcher at a decent price, maybe by picking up his big salary, and see what happens, let the in-house catcher and SS options play out.
  19. Start by giving the every day SS job to Escobar, see if he can provide better defense and pick up his batting, see if he is an every day SS or a utility player. They need to be patient with Santana, the Twins have two other examples of players that took time to develop in Plouffe and Dozier. Send him to Chattanooga (since Rochester is occupied by Polanco) and let him get his hitting stroke and confidence back. Leave Polanco in Rochester for now, let him play every day, see if he can iron out his defense. With these three battling for the starting spot and with each having the potential to be a long-term starter, I don't see the Twins making a trade, these guys need to play. After the season possibly trade one of them. Give this rotation five weeks, until the end of August, then pick two to be on the ML roster, for the hopeful playoff run.
  20. This. With Suzuki signed thru this year they'll ride him until at least this winter before they think catcher trade. A bigger need is relief pitching and I think if Ryan is going to send off any of his valuable prospects at the trade deadline it will be for relief pitching.
  21. It all depends what some other team is willing to offer, if the price is right, ship him out. That being said, I wouldn't trade Arcia, too much potential, too much power, you don't see that every day. I'm not really an Arcia fan, he seems like too much of a head case, kind of like Gomez, but Gomez turned into a pretty good player!!! He'll be up within a month, either because the Twins are slumping or because of an injury.
  22. Agreed, 4-5 would be what I'd guess, anything better than that would be great!! I also agree in that last statement, we'll see if the Detroit series propels them going into August. Lots of season left...
  23. I thought it was a very good trade, a weak armed singles hitting outfielder for two young pitchers with a lot of potential. May is proving that and Worley had been high in the Nat. league rookie of the year voting, it just didn't work out. A combo of him not wanting to be here, not putting in the work, and the Twins giving up on him too soon, it just didn't work. I'd do the trade again in a heartbeat.
  24. I'm still not convinced that he should be brought up yet, he's disappointed me too many times, let him pull a 'Milone', prove it over a longer period of time -- at Rochester. If he's truly turned the corner, he'll force his way back up - in mid August or September.
