  1. The Twins know that another losing team means empty seats at Target Field, less $8 beers and $10 hotdogs sold, thats one of the reason they went out and signed Nolasco and Santana instead of playing the young starters like Myers.
  2. I don't think the most posters here on TD take in account the 'Target Field' influence on the Twins thinking. Its a money making machine when its full. It takes a competitive .500 team to keep the casual fans interested and coming to Target Field. The Twins had a better chance of being competitive by signing a few veterans like Nolasco, Santana, and Hunter rather than watching the youngsters struggle. Then they start adding some of the hot-shot prospects in late 2015, 2016, 2017, staying competitive and .500 and filling Target Field. They make money, most of the fans are happy, make the playoffs, if they get lucky, the right batch of players fall together, and they make the World Series every 10 years. That's the timeline I think the Twins are on. Can this current front office accomplish that?? Yes, if the injuries don't derail them. I think they do need to start playing .500 ball by mid-2016 or Jim Pohlad is going to get impatient and start cleaning house.
  3. Wasn't the mantra when Hunter was signed 'there is no such thing as a bad one year contract'. As far as I know, its still a one year contract. If Hunter shouldn't be in right field, who from the minors has earned the chance??
  4. I'll always remember Joe Nathan fondly!!! He saved a lot of games for the Twins. You wonder why he'd want to return at 40+, he's made a LOT of money, the last couple of years he really hasn't been that good, why not fade away while you're still on top??
  5. What a nice gig!!! Getting paid a million dollars to sit on your butt!!!
  6. Excellent read!!! This is why I come to Twins Daily!!
  7. 40 games. Thats normally the mantra and in this case it still applies (except for Pinto, he was injured and if he keeps hitting, he'll be up soon). 40 games gives the youngsters some time to build confididence, EARN A PROMOTION, and gives all the rejects on the roster an adequate shot to succeed.
  8. I never understood that about Plouffe, he played shortstop all thru the minors, THEN when he made the big time they decide he didn't have what it takes at shortstop. Then they're scrambling to get him to a different position, learning on the fly on the major league club. Why didn't that happen years before? Who was watching and coaching him?
  9. Jay, I agree 100%!!!! I was reading down thru the comments on one of the TD articles yesterday and I thought to myself 'I have to get out of here, get away from all these negative Nellies, time to go find something else to read'. Its springtime, I can go read about crappie fishing, turkey hunting, gardening, etc. and not get the bad vibes. On TD I'm just going to restrict myself to the GREAT informative articles by Seth, Parker, etc. Go Twins!!
  10. "But sometimes that's a thing that you can grow from and how to keep yourself healthy and when to do certain things and when not to. There is a knack of keeping yourself healthy. Sano couldn't do much about Tommy John. I don't want to pretend that that just was a fluke. Buxton's were flukes." I thought the comments about Buxton and Sano staying healthy were interesting. First he's saying they need to learn when to do things and NOT do things to keep themselves healthy (as in diving for balls) and then hes saying the injuries were flukes - which is it??
  11. Cross your fingers and hope he stays healthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. I think what should happen is that Hicks gets sent to the minors to get more experience, make him earn a call up with an extended period of good play both defensively and with the bat. Play Santana in center 3 days a week and at short 3 days a week. Schafer plays the other 3 days in center and Escubar plays the other 3 days at short, with another day on the field as a replacement at third or second. Santana gets better in center, gets experience at short, Escubar plays enough at short that he could be trade bait if someone needs a shortstop badly, Dozier and Ploufe get more time off during the season so that they don’t wear down by September. Win, win, win, all the way around. Use 2015 to see who is the best at shortstop, Santana or Escubar, and also to give players experience at multple positions (why that doesn't happen in the minors is material for another post!!!). I think what will happen is that Hicks will be the starter out of spring training, until he fails. Then if Rosario is playing decent at all, he will be up, with Buxton in September – provided hes having an above average season. Why is it that people think that Santana should be the starter at shortstop over Escubar??
  13. Realistically, barring injury, how many years before Kohl Stewart plays for the Twins? Will he ever play with Alex Meyer, before Meyer becomes a free agent?
  14. Related question, Escobar had a good year at short, why does everybody say that Santana should be at short instead?? What did he do in the minors or majors to earn the starting shortstop job??
  15. Agreed 110%!!! Hopefully a few down years by the Twins will mellow out that crowd and they'll be happy when the Twins win again.
  16. Agreed!! The one silver lining in the year delay may be that since the hot prospect pitchers are also still in the minors, with some of them multiple levels away, Buxton and Sano will play with them longer before their free agency comes.
  17. Meyer will need to EARN his way onto the roster by the end of spring training. If hes lights out he'll come north, otherwise he gets sent to AAA. I'm fine with that, barring a Meyer injury, or great performances and no injuries to the Twins five starters (what are the odds of that!!!) he'll be up in 2015.
  18. Maybe 'not motivated' would be a better choice of words. There are many examples of athletes with all the physical tools in the world that don't succeed yet other athletes with fewer tools are stars - why? Motivation.
  19. I hope that his next injury is not career threatening, like Jason Kubel blowing out his knee. So far hes been 'lucky', all his injuries have been able to heal. Another concussion wouldn't be good either.
  20. No I didn’t realize it was a ‘game saving’ catch but that doesn’t matter, the point is that if he’s not on the field playing on a regular basis he’s no good to his team. Would the Twins be better off with him making a game saving catch in May, injuring himself, and being out six weeks or would they be better off with him in the lineup every day, helping them win games for those six weeks he’s out? Save the Superman plays for games that really matter, games in the playoffs or World Series. This was a minor league game in showcase league, he’d be better off playing more games for them. I know it’s a fine line between developing a competitive athlete and a lackadaisical athlete (can you say Aaron Hicks) but he needs to play smarter. Running into walls, diving for every ball, and colliding with other players is not going to help him or the Twins. As an aging sportswriter for the Strib likes to say “the same players are always hurt”. Buxton is certainly starting to look like that.
  21. He has to learn that he’s not Superman!!! Playing hard is one thing, playing stupid is another, diving for every ball is stupid. His 'HOF career' is going to be awfully disappointing if he can't stay off the injury list.
  22. Thanks Seth for the informative, POSITIVE article on the Twins chances in the upcoming years!!!
  23. After watching Aaron Hicks fail miserably after being brought up too soon?? After both being injured for most of the year?? NOT a good idea!!! Twins are desperate but not stupid.
