  1. I stil miss Johan, loved listening to the game when he started, you knew the Twins had a good chance to win, especially when he heated up in the summer time. Glad that they didn't sign him to that type of contract though!!!
  2. I agree, this is the bigger issue. Dump Nishi to some Japanese team, get what you can from him, clear the way for someone else. Since pitching is such a precious commodity, bring Blackburn to spring training and maybe-maybe-maybe he'll have figured something out. If not, still keep him at Rochester, help their W-L record, hes there if needed. And if he goes 10-5 at AAA, maybe someone will trade for him at the deadline... Pitching is always in demand.
  3. It is without a doubt, Tommy Herr! We gave up Tom Brunanski for him! Ron Davis as a closer is right up there. You took the words right out of my mouth!!! They traded a good player in Bruno to get a malcontent like Herr. Worse than spending 15 million on Nishi.
  4. I agree, with both coming off injuries, they'll be very cautious with both. And when was the last time Baker pitched a full season without going on the DL? I'm going to bet that they resign Pavano. Twins like 'innings eaters', before he got hurt this year, thats what he was. If he comes back in Sept., has 3-4 good six inning starts, they can sign him to a low base salary with incentives for innings pitched. He can pitch early on while Baker and Gibson get up to speed, if he sucks, release him or trade him. If he’s good, it’s a good gamble.
  5. I think that you hit it on the head, it will be a 'cattle call' of starting pitchers next spring, all the guys you mentioned plus a couple of marginal free agents, and hope that several will step up. Thats the way the Twins have always done it, they've never had powerhouse teams, their margin for error is always slim, if most players don't have good years, with a couple of great ones thrown in, and they don't avoid injury, they lose. I think the real elephant in the room is Target Field, the Twins brass has seen what happened in Cleveland, the new stadium draws people for a few years, but without a competitive team, they don't draw fans. And that means less $8 beers and $6 hotdogs sold. They're not going to blow up the team, they've got a pretty good nucleus, adding a couple of good starters will go a long ways to making them competitive. My prediction is that Terry Ryan will do what he always has done, trade from a position of strength, which is the glut of outfielders, he'll trade one of them, most likely Span, for a starting pitcher.
  6. Good article Jim!!! First time I had been to Knuckleballs, bookmarked it.
  7. I followed Seth over here from SethSpeaks and appreciate all the good in-depth baseball info. on both the major and minor league teams. One thing I don't like about the site is the viciousness of some of the commenter’s and the attacks on other commenter’s. I know you need to have a thick skin on these online sites but pity the poor baseball fan that asks a “stupid” or “silly” question. I’m sure there are a lot of people that won’t participate and post because they’re afraid of getting barbecued by one of the ‘experts’.
  8. Good article Seth!!! Always enjoy reading your posts!! TR did what he needed to do, got something out of Liriano, a free agent at the end of the season. Yes it would have been nice to get more but obviously other teams didn't want the head case that badly. TR has had bad luck in the fact that his other two prime free agents, Pavano and Capps, are both hurt. I fully expect both of them to still be traded if they come back and pitch at all and prove they're healthy. Again, get something for the free agent at the end of the season. I think the signing of Dumait tipped TR's hand, he thinks with his everyday lineup, the addition of a couple of pitchers, and the Twins can be contenders next year. Theres also the Target Field factor, without at least a contending team, attendance is down, less $8 beers and $6 hotdogs are sold. If they had a fire sale, fans will stay away in droves.
  9. Does anybody on this board ever listen to Terry Ryan? They should since he's running the show. TR likes consistency and good defense, that’s why he brought in Carol. He didn't offer a contract to Liriano because he was so inconsistent. Can you see the parallel with Liriano and Casilla?? Both can be great at times but wildly inconsistent. Because of that, Casilla will be gone next year, unless he has a very good, consistent last two months of the season.
  10. The new issue of Sports Illustrated had a good article on Bundy and how the O's are being so very careful with him. Another point they made was how many high school pitchers wash out and never make the majors.
  11. Hendricks will be back sometime before the season is over. It may be Sept. 1. A big part of pitching is confidence, is it better to keep getting bombed in the majors or dominate in AAA? Let him work out a few kinks, they'll call him up when hes ready. Blackburn is up because they have very few other options. Hopefully he has HIS confidence back!!!
  12. The Twins like a good closer because management realizes that it’s a psychological blow to the whole team every time they lose in the 9th inning. Can you say 'Ron Davis'?
  13. I think the Twins showed their hand when they extended Dumait, with Willingham, Mauer, Morneau, you have a core worth building around. Add a couple of good starters and they're in contention next year. If you blow up the team by trading all your decent assets (Perkins, Span, Ploufe, Burton, etc.) then all you have is the two lame ducks with big contracts (Mauer and Morneau) sitting there, with a crappy team around them, hoping all these 'prospects' you pickup mature. Span might go though, since they have Revere to replace him. Thats the type of trade that Ryan will make, identify where they have 'extra' players and trade them for needed parts.
  14. So what kind of a contract will Liriano get in free agency this winter? What would it take for the Twins to sign him to a 2, 3, or 4 year contract?? He drives you crazy with his inconsistency but with his high upside, it could be worth the risk, at the right price. And they could always trade him next year at the trade deadline.... In 20013, if he has truly turned the corner and the Twins still suck, then they could truly get some gooooood prospects.
  15. It would be nice to keep him, but at what price?? Blackburn money? Hes a border line head case but with his potential I think the Twins will get outbid for him.
  16. The Twins traded Wilson Ramos, their number one prospect at the time, never say never, if teams think they can make a run at the playoffs, who knows what they'll trade??
  17. With a change of scenery, Liriano WILL develop into somebody else's ace, theres no doubt in my mind, but the Twins may as well get what they can for him because once he becomes a free agent, other teams will outbid the Twins for him, just on potential. I don't know why everybody wants to trade Span?? Until Hicks, Benson, etc. develop to the point where you need to find a place for them, keep him - unless you're overwhelmed with an offer. Ryan has made more positive moves than negative moves, I have faith that he'll do the right thing at the trade deadline.
  18. Will be visiting my sister-in law in Wisconsin first week in July, we've got tickets to the July 7th game, really looking forward to it, especially after reading your reports!!
  19. If I had to pick, I'd rather have a contending team that has a chance to to win every night, plays .500 ball, and makes the playoffs vs the horrible team that we watched the first month and half of the season. Thats what you're going to have for years if you trade every decent player you have for unproven prospects.
  20. I think you hit it on the head right there. Unless the Twins really tank between now and the trade deadline, Terry R. is not going to hold a fire sale. Personally I wouldn't trade Span unless they get a stud prospect in return.
