    Several thoughts: 1) If the infield is playing back, why not bunt for a hit? It forces the defense to make a play, the possibility of an error, we saw what happened with Doziers bunt last week. And even if its only for one base, it keeps the line moving. 2) Don't expect a batter to execute a good bunt if they haven't done it for months in a game situation. Yes they can practice it every day in batting practice but thats not the same as facing a pitcher throwing 96, you're down by one run in the eighth, the pressure is on.

    Thanks again Tom for the game recaps!!! After being out of town for the weekend, it was nice to read them and catch up. It will be interesting to see how Gibson does against a better team...

    He put the ball in play, forcing the Tigers to make the play, which they didn't. Bunt or hitting away, who cares?? The results were good.

    Thanks for a good review Seth!!! I was wondering earlier this morning what the Angels schedule was. The Twins need to stomp the Tigers tonight, score in the double digits, get their mojo back after getting their heads handed to them on a platter. Win 3 of 4 in Detroit, 1 of 3 in Cleveland, then they can return home in control of their own destiny.

    Whatever happens, the young players are gaining experience under pressure, that can only help in the long run. Goto New York, get a well pitched game, a few key hits, and they can win and go onward to play at least three more games. More experience. The best thing is that they are still relevant in late September!!!!! When I'm at duck camp this weekend, we'll be looking up the Twins score.

    They need to pitch Tonkin more, find out whether he has turned the corner or whether he should be cut loose this winter.

    I'd rather see them sign a big buck free agent pitcher, keep the prospects, see how they develop. When Dozier leaves they'll need Gordon to replace him.

    Stanton? I said previously not the Sano's of the world. Arguing for arguments sake. This bunting discussion started because Dozier bunted for a hit when he saw the infield drawn back. That's my point, take advantage for what the defense does. Bunt a few times, the defense moves in, making it easier to hit thru that hole, keep the defense honest, in the meantime getting a bunt hit and keeping the line moving.

    Sure. Not the Sano's of the world but whats the difference if Buxton bunts for a hit and steals second or hits a double??

    Maybe not needed, but a bunt is another weapon to be used. Back to the original Dozier bunt reference, he 'kept the line moving' by bunting, isn't that really what matters??

    I guess it depends upon your definition of periodic. --------------------------- Definition of periodic 1 a :occurring or recurring at regular intervals b :occurring repeatedly from time to time ------------------- To me periodic, in a baseball terms, would be weekly, since they play almost every day.

    Sure. But in order to be good at anything, you need to keep doing it in a high pressure, game situation. If you have a veteran player that hasn't bunted in a few years, how good will they be at it?? Bunt periodically to keep defenses honest and so you know how to do it when its really needed in a game situation.

    You don't get to be a better bunter unless you practice it. In game situations, not against a batting practice pitcher throwing 65 mph.

    You forgot to mention that Dozier BUNTED for a hit. From the Strib - "With Robbie Grossman on first and Jason Castro on second, Dozier noticed Donaldson playing back at third and bunted for a hit, loading the bases for Mauer."

    I got a good chuckle out of this, so true, but it sure is fun to be watching meaningful games into late September!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've already been out and checked the Twins schedule for the weekend so I make sure to tune in.

    Having Perkins on the roster, pitching very few innings in low leverage situations isn't hurting the Twins. Its actually a classy move by the Twins, showing some respect for a veteran that has contributed much to the Twins over the years and fought his way back to the mound after a long injury rehab. Hopefully Perkins will realize he's done and will exit gracefully by retiring after the season. Thats what letting him pitch a few innings now in September does, lets him know he's done.

    Souhan -- and any columnist -- gets read by writing on controversial subjects. Mission accomplished in this case. As far as who to read, after awhile, you learn which columnist (or blogger) you respect and follow. Souhan I personally don't read very often. Here on TD, some posters are ranters, you blow by their posts. Some you learn to respect. I even feel honored to have my own personal TD stalker, hes always critical of my posts. You learn in a hurry that its very easy to be a blowhard when you're hiding behind a keyboard.

    Sign him and let him fight for the 5th starter spot next year. He's got more potential than some of the other AAAA starters (Dillon Gee!!) that they've trotted out there.

    Joe Nathan saved a lot of games for the Twins and I hated to see him struggle after he left the Twins. He had made his money, it was time to retire.

    Thats getting to be the standard response here on TD ' show proof'!!!! These are online forums, you can write anything you want!!! Just kidding!!! As others have said, this is Dozier's first and last good chance at free agency, he's going to want a 3-5 year deal. If someone is willing to pay big bucks to sign him, then there should be a trade market for him. Package him this winter with young prospect and bring back a good pitching prospect. The Twins have enough middle infield players to replace him.
