  1. Two related notes: 1) It used to drive me crazy when someone would be injured but they'd decide to keep him on the bench for a few days hoping for a fast recovery -- then Gardy would be complaining about a short bench!!! Go get somebody from Rochester!!! 2) I'm not as optimistic as some people here on TD that the Twins will sign another starter so the bullpen depth is going to be sorely needed.
  2. I like the depth!!! Falvine has proven last year that they won't hesitate to shuttle people back and forth from Rochester, either as an injury replacement or when they need another pitcher. With the back end of the starting rotation very suspect, I think you'll be seeing quite a few games with relievers being being used starting in the 4-5-6th innings. It doesn't take many days of that to wear down the bullpen, now they'll have capable replacements in Rochester to call up. I like it!!
  3. Its hard to factor in the desire for WS championship ring vs. playing for one team your whole career. What if the Yankees or Red Sox call in 2019 and tell him 'you're what we need to get over the hump, play some first base and DH', we think we can get to the WS with you. We know he's made plenty of money and his family is here but a ring would cap off his career. Personally I think he stays with the Twins in 2019, sign an incentive laden contract with options for 2020, if the Twins look like they are on the brink of a playoff run, hes going to want to be a part of it.
  4. It will be interesting to see how Falvine handles the Dozier situation. Do they value the veteran leadership and extend him?? Do they trade him at the deadline, showing no team loyalty? It will be interesting!!!!
  5. I think Falvine consider 2017 a fluke that the Twins made the wild card and are considering 2018 a 'let the young players develop year'. Buxton, Rosario, Kepler, Polanco, Berrios, Sano, all have lots of room for improvement and need to show that they can perform and stay healthy for a full year. They'll sort thru all the bull pen (and starting pitcher) arms this year. Then they can make some big signings for 2019. In the meantime they're improving their whole organization, hiring and firing, setting the Twins up for some long-term, sustainable success. Patience.
  6. I always made a point of listening to the game when Yohan pitched!!! As the summer wore on and he got hot, you were almost certain to get a well pitched game. Hall of Famer?? In my book he was. Joe I think gets in. Great start to his carreer as a catcher, a few bad years while injured, the voters will take that in account, a few above average years as a first basement, he gets in the HOF.
  7. I like it. Better yet, make it for four years. I hate the idea of a long contract for a 31 year old pitcher.
  8. As far as Sano and Buxton go, I'm not on the bandwagon yet. Sano has to prove he can play a whole year, keep his weight down, and cut down on his strikeouts. Buxton has to prove that he can stop running into walls or other players. The Twins will be luck to get 200 games out of the two of them this year. You can't count on them so that means all the other young players need to mature and step up, meaning the Twins are still a year or two away from needing to make that big trade to get over the hump.
  9. Slow and steady will win a lot of races. Lets see if the young guys can duplicate last years win total, gain some maturity, become steady, consistent players, maybe even the all-star players we hope they will be, THEN is the time to trade a bunch of prospects for the missing piece(s).
  10. I'd prefer that the Twins keep their prospects, let the current core of Buxton, Kepler, Polanco, etc. get another year of experience, see if they are the real deal, see if Sano is going to ever be healthy. Use $ to sign a couple of mid-level pitchers, sort thru all the AAA starters, then next winter make a big trade. Or even at the trade deadline this summer, if the Twins are in contention. Keep the prospects, spend $ to improve, let the prospects get experience, THEN make a big trade splash to get over the hump.
  11. It was pretty underwhelming what they did last year when they had the number one Rule 5 pick, I don't expect much this year as far as gains for the Twins. If they lose Burdi, I think that will hurt them in the long run, he has too much potential.
  12. The 'how' they improve is going to make for an interesting off-season. Do they do trades, sign free agents, stand pat, or a combo of the above.
  13. "they'll exercise a $700,000 buyout to decline the $6.5 million team option for Glen Perkins." A nice going away present for Perkins!!! I think I could feed my family on that for awhile!!! Its amazing how the salaries of pro athletes has gotten into the Monopoly money range (see Wiggins, Andrew). Baseball is the same way.
  14. I say wait, lets see him hit for a full year and lets see if he can stay healthy for another year. A few more bounces off the wall may convince him to play smarter.
  15. What other teams are going to offer an aging second baseman a five contract?? Offer him a decent three year extension, if he takes it great, if not use the money on pitching.
  16. Enlightening article concerning Molitor and bunting in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. http://www.twincities.com/2017/10/09/dont-tell-paul-molitors-twins-the-sacrifice-bunt-is-a-dying-art/
  17. Jason Kubel was never the same after wrecking his knee. I hope we never say the same thing about Buxton, but I'm not optimistic.
  18. Thanks for the write-ups over the year Tom!!! Love that 'Atlantic City' line in your write-up, its one of my favorite Bruce songs.
  19. I think the two biggest factors has been bringing in the veteran player leadership and the coaching changes, showing the young core how its done both by example and how do get it done technically.
  20. Thanks again Tom for the game recaps!!! After being out of town for the weekend, it was nice to read them and catch up. It will be interesting to see how Gibson does against a better team...
  21. He put the ball in play, forcing the Tigers to make the play, which they didn't. Bunt or hitting away, who cares?? The results were good.
  22. Thanks for a good review Seth!!! I was wondering earlier this morning what the Angels schedule was. The Twins need to stomp the Tigers tonight, score in the double digits, get their mojo back after getting their heads handed to them on a platter. Win 3 of 4 in Detroit, 1 of 3 in Cleveland, then they can return home in control of their own destiny.
  23. They need to pitch Tonkin more, find out whether he has turned the corner or whether he should be cut loose this winter.
  24. I'd rather see them sign a big buck free agent pitcher, keep the prospects, see how they develop. When Dozier leaves they'll need Gordon to replace him.
  25. Stanton? I said previously not the Sano's of the world. Arguing for arguments sake. This bunting discussion started because Dozier bunted for a hit when he saw the infield drawn back. That's my point, take advantage for what the defense does. Bunt a few times, the defense moves in, making it easier to hit thru that hole, keep the defense honest, in the meantime getting a bunt hit and keeping the line moving.
