  1. Sure. Not the Sano's of the world but whats the difference if Buxton bunts for a hit and steals second or hits a double??
  2. Maybe not needed, but a bunt is another weapon to be used. Back to the original Dozier bunt reference, he 'kept the line moving' by bunting, isn't that really what matters??
  3. I guess it depends upon your definition of periodic. --------------------------- Definition of periodic 1 a :occurring or recurring at regular intervals b :occurring repeatedly from time to time ------------------- To me periodic, in a baseball terms, would be weekly, since they play almost every day.
  4. Sure. But in order to be good at anything, you need to keep doing it in a high pressure, game situation. If you have a veteran player that hasn't bunted in a few years, how good will they be at it?? Bunt periodically to keep defenses honest and so you know how to do it when its really needed in a game situation.
  5. You don't get to be a better bunter unless you practice it. In game situations, not against a batting practice pitcher throwing 65 mph.
  6. You forgot to mention that Dozier BUNTED for a hit. From the Strib - "With Robbie Grossman on first and Jason Castro on second, Dozier noticed Donaldson playing back at third and bunted for a hit, loading the bases for Mauer."
  7. I got a good chuckle out of this, so true, but it sure is fun to be watching meaningful games into late September!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've already been out and checked the Twins schedule for the weekend so I make sure to tune in.
  8. Nice article John!! Also makes me want to watch Forrest Gump again. Run Forrest run!!
  9. Souhan -- and any columnist -- gets read by writing on controversial subjects. Mission accomplished in this case. As far as who to read, after awhile, you learn which columnist (or blogger) you respect and follow. Souhan I personally don't read very often. Here on TD, some posters are ranters, you blow by their posts. Some you learn to respect. I even feel honored to have my own personal TD stalker, hes always critical of my posts. You learn in a hurry that its very easy to be a blowhard when you're hiding behind a keyboard.
  10. Sign him and let him fight for the 5th starter spot next year. He's got more potential than some of the other AAAA starters (Dillon Gee!!) that they've trotted out there.
  11. You made my point a lot better than I could of!!!!!!!!!!! People bitch about bunting but theres many ways too help a team win!!!!
  12. So whats the difference if Buxton bunts and then steals second or if he hits a double? If he bunts on a regular basis its going to make the infield play in, helping when he hits away. I like it.
  13. It will be interesting to see how the Twins do in the five games against the White Sox. The WS are on a down cycle but they always seem to play the Twins tough, lets hope the Twins have the fortitude to bear down and stick it to them. Winning four out of five would be nice but I'll settle for three out of five.
  14. Great leadoff picture again!!! Two little munchkins all 'goggled' up for the eclipse!! Love it!!
  15. Not a big fan of ditch kitty's, I was just imagining the scrum when the doggies caught him. And unless there was a tree handy, they probably would. Was also wondering whether the picture was a photo-shop creation....
  16. Love the lead-off picture of the dogs chasing the kitty!!! And love the "When it is only 23 million… it is hardly worth the effort" -- always good to start out the morning with a chuckle!!!
  17. I saw that right away and was in the process of fixing the 'spelling' when you posted...
  18. Interesting side note on Ervin. I knew that he had changed his name from Johan because of that 'other' Johan Santana but the Strib had an interesting article explaining why he picked to change to Ervin. Supposedly in his youth he was a hot-shot basketball player and his nickname was Magic, as in Earvin "Magic" Johnson, so when it came time to change his name, he chose Ervin. Not sure why he didn't spell it the same....
  19. Thats what happens when you're the 25th player on the roster. Do a little better the next time you're up so that you're the 24th or 23rd man. Not feeling sorry for him.
  20. My thinking is that getting rid of Dozier gives you a chance to see if Gordon and Polanco can be part of the core for the next 5 years. Playing Dozier next year, then letting him go as a free agent doesn't help answer the question of whether Gordon and Polanco. And maybe, just maybe, you can get an A longshot for Dozier that would help in the future.
  21. The sad part of this is that as others have pointed out, Mauer and Dozier are only league average players at their positions but aside from Sano they are still better than anything else the Twins have on the roster. Dozier needs to go this winter to clear the middle infielder logjam. I'd rather see what Gordon and Polanco can become rather than trade one of them and keep Dozier for one more year. Mauer is a different story. The Twins at this point have no one better than him to play first. Maybe Sano but then who plays third? The really interesting future byline concerning Mauer is what happens after 2018?? Does he retire or sign with the Twins for a reduced salary and reduced role?? With the hope that the young core takes him to the World Series?? Would the Twins want him back at a reduced salary?
  22. The short answer to the original question is yes, the Twins can win with Mauer and Dozier. They just need all the other young players - Sano, Buxton, Kepler, etc. to step up to the next level. But isn't that the way most teams get better?? The young players need to step up. You can't afford enough free agents to fill all the holes.
  23. Do you suppose there are a few contending teams out there thinking to themselves 'maybe we should have met the Twins asking price for Erv?'
  24. Joe Hometown Hero Mauer is going to be here next year unless he goes below the Mendoza line. Bet on it. What will be interesting to see is what happens when his contract is done. Will he hang it up?? Or will he see the young, hopefully winning core and sign another two year contract for say $5 million a year, in hopes of finally getting to the World Series?? Will Falvine sign him for that if Joe is willing? It should be interesting.
