    If he turns into the superstar we all hope he does but won't sign an extension in 3.5 years, he can always be traded. If he doesn't turn into a superstar, all this angst is for nothing. And he can still be traded at anytime if he has a bad attitude.

    Falvine is paid to do whats best for the franchise and that means getting the extra year of service time on Buxton. If Buxton overcomes his normal poor start and is having an MVP type season on July 1, is it because now hes motivated to show Falvine and the Twins or is it because Falvine gave him the extra month off to get healthy, lift weights, bulk up? Only time will tell.

    You're probably correct but I just threw that in there to placate some of the TD readers that willl be outraged when the Twins don't spend that 30-40 millions dollars, at least they've spent it long-term on extentions.

    As for Mauer, I'm going to be more sentimental here and just say I hope he doesn't come back, just because of the injury risk and long term consequences. Go read up on Jim Mcmahon or other concussion victims. But if Joe had that concern I think he would have retired mid-season, so I think he'll want to come back, and again being sentimental, I'd say let him. I don't want to see him playing for another team. Theres a place for his defense and good at bats and i don't seriously think the Twins are going to contend next year, he's not holding anyone back.

    I started reading down thru this thread with the clear idea "keep Buxton down, gain the year of control, he's played and injured himself into this position", screw him. After reading thru the posts, I've been convinced that having him up for September getting major league at bats and coaching is probably best for his long term development. Especially when someone pointed out that he can be sent down for 29 days next year to gain that extra year of control. Make it clear to Buxton that next spring he is not guaranteed a job, make it clear that we're going to give you the 'Sano' treatment if he's floundering. Somebody also has to get it into his head that thinking hes Superman and can run thru walls is actually hurting his career and the Twins. Save that for the last out in the World Series.

    That doesn't mean they have to spend it. I could see them possibly spending the money on extensions to Rosario, Berrios, Kepler, etc. We will see, the free agent market last year was funky and I don't see it changing, if it was me I'd have a wait and see attitude, see if some of the huge contracts will come down. The high end free agents like Harper and Machado will get paid but it will be interesting to see about the rest of the free agents.

    On a related note, I keep reading in different posts that the Twins and Falvine 'will have a boatload of money to spend on free agency'. I don't see it. The free agent market last year was funky, few signings until late, and for less money. If I'm Falvine I'd let the market self correct downward for another year, keep building the farm system, see how Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Kepler, Polanco, Berrios,etc. develop and shoot for 2020 to spend this boatload of money.

    Too soon to grade, you need at least five years. Its kind of like a college football coach, you need to let him bring in his coaches, set up a system, win or lose on his own recruits and actions. Same with Falvine. They've set up new processes, changed coaches, started bringing in new players, had a couple of drafts, etc. now we need to be patient for a few years before we praise or tar and feather them.

    At this point won/lost record means nothing. What IS important is playing the young players and seeing what you've got, see what kind of ML potential that they have, giving them a taste of the ML's, seeing which ones might help you in 2019.

    It doesn't matter where PJ or Brewster came from, they were both hired as head coach of the Gophers. At this point PJ sounds just like the snake oil salesman Brewster, until PJ wins some Big Ten games and differentiates himself from Brewster, he's Brewster reincarnated. I can't stand listening to him. Until he starts winning its all talk and bluster. I hope Ruesse and other columnists do hold his feet to the fire. And lets face it, most columnists write controversial articles so they DO get read.

    You could say that about every team every year - Are they going to stay healthy? Will players play up to their players going to perform like past years? You could go on and on about every team and what needs to go right in order for them to win.

    2 & 3 is whats always bothered me, especially Plouffe. Get them all the way to the majors and THEN decide they don't have what it takes to play shortstop?? WTF! 1 Nishioka was also a headshaker. Hopefully that scout is toast.

    Seth, I like the piggy back idea but what are the odds that the Twins do something like that?? I just heard Molitor say the other day that he's still trying to win games. To him that means a starter and then piece in your best relievers.

    None of us know if an extension was offered or what Escobars family situation or what his temperament is, all I know is that if it was me that was traded, I'd be PO'd and it would take a serious overpay by the Twins to get me back. Which leads back to my original point, which was that I've read numerous times here on TD 'sign Escobar back in the office season', I don't see it happening.

    Yes I think they can contend in 2019 BUT it will be up to the starting pitching. Theres a lot of question marks. Has Gibson really turned the corner? Can Berrios reach the next level or will he continue to have a couple of good games and then a couple of clunkers?? THOSE ARE YOUR TWO MOST RELIABLE STARTERS!!! Everybody else is a question mark. The more I write, the more doubtful I am.

    I think the fact that they traded him, uprooted him and his family, negates any good will that they Twins might have with him. I know I'd be PO'd if I was him.

    I don't know why everyone is counting on Pineda, he's coming back from a major surgery. Plus Berrios has a lot to learn. They need every piece of depth that they can get!!!

    People keep saying 'sign Escobar' but I don't see it happening. Yeah he might like MN but does that override the 'they traded me , I had to uproot my family factor?' Plus you'll have twenty some other teams to bid against. I'd be really surprised if he signed back with the Twins.

    As long as its just a one year contract, I'd be ok with signing him. He appears to be the type of 'professional' hitter that the Twins like (kind of like Grossman) and Gordon doesn't look like he's ready.

    Buxton will be back in center in a few weeks (my fingers are crossed) so they need to get the other three some experience in the corners, especially Cave.
