This. 1) Castro and Garver can get the job done, other teams have won World Series without great catchers. 2) Good pitching is what wins, you need to keep any potential aces like Romero. 3) Will one very good catcher put the Twins over the hump?? I don't think so, plus you're putting all your eggs in one basket, if he gets hurt, then what?

I wish Joe would retire while he's still a good ball player and not hang on until he's released or pushed out the door some other way. Harmon Killebrew comes to mind, I think he played briefly for Kansas City at the end of his career.- 19 replies

What is Trevor Plouffe (Red Wings report) doing, 32 and still kicking around in the minors? You'd think he'd take the hint, either become a coach or get a real job.

Not sure about your 1-3 ranking, I think Gibson, if he's not traded will challenge Berrios to be the ace fo the staff. Yes Berrios has a lot of potential but he still has a lot to learn. Romero? Lots and lots of potential but he's still in the group of Slegers, etc until he shows he can get it done.- 23 replies

Article: The Time to Trade Kyle Gibson Is Now
Blackjack replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It works if the young players finally start reaching their potential. Trust me, I'm not a big fan of either the hefty Sano or the wall-crashing Buxton but for the Twins to be a contender anytime sooner than 2021, one or both of them needs to perform. Along with the other young players that I mentioned that still have a lot of upside - Kepler, Berrios, Rosario, Polanco. And Gordon is right around the corner. And its not the same team if you shed Mauer, Dozier, LoMo, Santana, Lynn, Rodney. It opens up first base/DH for Sano. It opens up a couple of starting pitcher and bullpen spots. Not to mention the payroll flexibility that the Twins have to spend on free agents (a catcher?) this winter or make a trade in July 2019. -

Interesting reading the different opinions on who the Twins should sell. Most agree that the Twins won't get much for the players with expiring contracts, Lynn, Morrison, Dozier, etc. Then others want to get rid of any player with additional value not names Berrios, the Escobars, Gibsons, etc. Then there is the differing opinions on how far are the Twins from contention, that determines who you sell and who you keep. My opinion is that you need to see how Sano, Buxton, Kepler, Polanco, Berrios, do between now and July 15, 2019. They still all have great potential to be a winning core. If you believe that, and I do, then you need to keep the players with longer contracts that can help you, Gibson, Odorrizi, Reed, and try your best to sign Escobar. -

This is a tough one. You win with pitching, it seems like trading Gibson says you're already giving up on 2019, I don't think Berrios plus the motley crew behind him - Slegers, Romero, Littel, etc. aren't going to get it done in 2019. I guess I'd want to see someone else overpay before I'd trade Gibson. -

On another subject, I hope the front office and the Pohlads realize that with the crummy team, attendance is going to suffer and they're going to sell a lot less $10.50 beers and $10 hotdogs at Target field. I was at Target Field Sat night for the Eagles concert, hotter than he11 but a great concert, but I was appalled at the prices. Last time I was at Target Field beers were $8. Almost like a license to print money. -

Thanks Nick!!! Same tune, different year for the Twins. Out of contention by the All-star break. Was listening to the broadcast yesterday, Cory and Dan Gladden were arguing about whether they should be buyers or sellers, Cory was pointing out how far under .500 they were vs last years record and Danny was trying to say that the Twins 'had a lot of talent on this team, they deserve a chance'. I was shaking my head until I realized that Gladden has to go into the clubhouse and face the players, of course he's going to be on their side. Lets just hope the front office is taking the long view and doing whats best for the franchise, sell!!!! -

No matter who sent Pressly out, it is a puzzler. Its obvious he's wearing down (already) and yet they run him out when you're down by 5 runs. Why not Reed, Magill, or Duke?- 20 replies

Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Sell, Sell, Sell?
Blackjack replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I want to echo the last two posts, keep Rosario, Berrios, Kepler, dump a lot of the rest of the to make room for the younger players, let them play in August and September, see what you have. If Gordon isn't up August 1st.... Escobar, I'd try to sign before the deadline, if he won't sign trade him. Mauer has earned the right to respect his wishes, show some class and ask him what he wants, be traded to a contender or play out his career with the Twins. -

Regarding Belisle, not sure where the Twins FO draw the line between performance and mentoring, but somewhere I read quotes form Alan Busenitz talking about how great Belisle is in the clubhouse, blah, blah, blah -- THATS why he is here, right or wrong. You'd hope that sooner or later he'd have to perform.- 36 replies

With Buxton, it seems to be a confidence problem, if he can't hit AAA pitching, what is he going to do against major league pitching?? Flail away, lose more confidence, flail away some more. I'd leave him down at AAA until he can at least hit at that level.- 36 replies

Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Fixing the Offense
Blackjack replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sano -- If they're really intent on 'rebooting' him, I don't think we'll see him until August. Buxton -- I have no confidence that he'll figure anything out anytime soon, not before September. He was flailing away before he got hurt, he needs lots of at bats to get his confidence and swing back. Dozier -- past history says he'll have a rebound in the second half but he's getting older, the pressure of a contract year is getting to him, I think we'll see some rebound but not like the past few years. Kepler -- he'll start hitting again, he's too smart and athletic not too, but he won't be the big spark they need. Polanco is the best hope. He's been working hard for three months, will have something to prove, he could do it. -
Thanks for the in-depth info!!!

One phrase keeps popping into my head every time there's a discussion about Sano. 'Its not the size of the bull, its the size of the heart in the bull'. I have two female Labradors, one is 75 pounds, one is 61 pounds, when I shoot a pheasant, the smaller dog is going to get it every time. She has more heart and desire. Shes going to come back with that bird or die trying. Its the same with people, you have the type A's that are moving and hustling all the time, where the type B's would rather just sit on their butts. You see it all the time in sports where a smaller less talented guy out plays the stud. Sano just seem to lack the desire. He's already banked a lot of money, enough to live like a king. Regardless of how he does the next 4-5 years, he'll sign at least one more big contract, he can add to his kingdom. No need to push himself. I don't think it will happen but it will be interesting to see how he'd react to getting sent down to AAA. Would he take it to heart and really apply himself or would he be upset and decide to leave the Twins ASAP? Would he hire a personal trainer in the off season to manage diet and exercise?? My guess is no. -

Good point about Dozier!! Also a good point about Buxton, he needs to get healthy before we trash him, no I mean before we judge him. Hopefully, with some proper coaching, he can start to hit a little. People on this board hate bunting but I think he should be bunting at least once every game!!! Get on base anyway you can!!! But I will say that I've always been disappointed in how he's so reckless in the field, injuring himself by running into walls/teammates/diving for one out when The Team would be better off with him on the field rather than on the injured list. Save that heroic out stuff for the last out of a playoff game.
