  1. Yeah he's made enough money that he could afford to walk away but there is more to playing than just money. Every player wants to say they won a championship and Mauer can see the team improving by leaps and bounds, if he sticks with it he may still have a shot at a ring. He'll be here until the end of his contract. People also bitch and moan about Mauer batting high in the batting order but until the Twins acquire and/or develop more players that are overall better batters than Mauer, he won't be batting 7th anytime soon. Even a declining ex-batting champ is better than most of the players in the Twins lineup.
  2. I also caught that interview and found it interesting to hear what he had to say about Kepler - "don't count him out". It will be interesting spring training, seeing if Kepler and/or Buxton hit well enough to make the team out of spring training. I still think its 50/50 on the trading of Plouffe before spring training. What else is TR going to say? If he says 'we're going to trade Plouffe' that will lower his market value.
  3. I would like second the idea that Duffy was a big positive. With good starting pitching so hard to come by, if he can have a full season comparable to his partial season, the Twins will really have something!!
  4. I agree, they're done looking for catchers this year.
  5. So then why all the angst and agony?? Two young guys got traded, both could flop, both could become regulars, or one of each, but only Father Time knows which it will be. My take is that the Twins filled a position of need from a position where they have lots of depth -- isn't that the ideal way to get it done??
  6. Span or any other competent outfielder isn't going to sign with the Twins with Buxton only a few months away.
  7. I think its a good trade. They get a catcher that can platoon with Suzuki, maybe even start and hold the position until the young catchers Turner or Garver emerge. Hicks had few bright spots, good defense but spotty hitthing, I think hes going to end up a platoon player. Murphy and Hicks both have some upside but both could end up being platooners. It will be years before a winner of the trade can be declared.
  8. I'm amazed that there aren't more comments on this article!!! There are 18 dozen ideas floating around in various posts about Twins deficiencies and possible trades but no one wants to jump in and say how the Twins compare to the Royals... Puzzling.
  9. The Twins are a year or three away, they need to let the young guys develop and THEN go out and make that big trade or free agent signing, Probably for a top of the line pitcher. Trading for Shields was huge for them!!! It showed them the grit needed to win!!! (side note, do you suppose Shields is kicking himself for signing elsewhere???!)
  10. Nice review of the players sent out west!! Thanks!! It will be really interesting to see how Turner and Garver do, since its such a big need for the Twins. It sure would be nice to see one of them emerge and be able to split time with Suzuki by July.
  11. This may sound like a dumb question but how do you avoid hitting into double plays?? Its going to happen sometimes, isn't it??
  12. As far as the Twins in the playoff hunt, I haven't caught the fever yet, not scoreboard watching. I just like the fact that they're playing competitive, winning baseball in mid- September!!
  13. One thing I don't like about the playoffs is that they stretch on too long, you're playing the world series in November. Really? In Minnesota?? Do you like seeing baseball played when you can see the players breath or you have snowflakes coming down?? I don't. To top it off they play all the games at night when its in the 30's when they could play during the day and it might be 45 and sunny.
  14. My wife and I were listening to Sid's Sunday morning show a couple weeks ago and she said "Sid sounds like he's talking underwater". After I scolded her for being disrespectful we both had a good laugh.
  15. I think that Ryan and company will be watching Turner and Garver very closely this fall!!! If either one shows any signs of improvement, my guess is that the Twins won't be doing any catcher shopping in the off-season.
  16. Looks like after last nights performance that Pelfrey will be in the rotation the rest of the year.
  17. Good article Seth!!! I never have understood the lack of love for Milone here on TD. All he does is goes out and performs, keeps Twins in games, and gives them a very good chance to win.
  18. I can relate to #5. My sister-in-law recently picked up two adult cats at the shelter and you can't get near them!!! I'm thinking why wouldn't you just get a nice puppy that would come tumbling into your lap every time you sat down, a puppy that would ALWAYS be happy to see you (as compared to say, your wife, who is only happy to see you some of the time). Different strokes for different folks.
  19. I don't think we'll see Berrios unless there is an injury to some other starting pitcher in the next couple of weeks.
  20. There's no such thing as too much pitching. The Twins just need to be a little quicker at making a change when the starters under perform.
  21. There you have it. Until the Twins find better relievers for the pen, this year AND in 2016, May should stay in the pen. The one problem I see with that is May's attitude. I'm sure that Molitor sat down with him this year and said "we need you out there" , so May has worked hard and performed. If he gets forced to the pen next year without a chance at starting and big bucks down the road, will he have the same attitude??
  22. The Twins have plenty of starters, they need relief help, leave him in the pen thru 2016. By then the 'excess' starters will work themselves out of a job, some of the big relief arms in the minors should be coming up, and hopefully by this time next year hopefully we'll be seriously contending -- May's arm will be needed in the pen.
