  1. Its unbelievable that the Twins didn't have Santana pee in a bottle and get drug tested BEFORE they signed him to a contract or that MLB doesn't allow them to cut players that test positive for PED's. The Twins needed to improve their starting pitching in order to improve, the did that by signing Hughes, Nolasco, and Santana, and they had to sign them to longer terms in order to get them to sign. It is what it is. With injuries, they don't have have too much starting depth. It'll work out. Would people rather see all the AAA starters here instead?? That would make for a long season!!!
  2. Hind site is 20-20. No doubt it would have been nice to have May the last few days. I think the Twins expected at least one or two of the young relief pitchers in the minors to be better and up here by now. Problem is, who in the minors IS worth calling up now?? Stashing a rule 5 guy on the roster is ok on a rebuilding team but now being in the wild card hunt, its hurting them. Only time and Graham's long term future will tell whether its the right thing to do. At this point they may as well stick with him. The Twins learned after Ron Davis that a good closer is important, its very demoralizing for a team to lose close games all the time and since then they've normally had a good closer. Now they're learning that a lousy bullpen can be demoralizing too. As with any good team it still boils down to starting pitching and right now they're not getting enough innnings out of their starters. Going to be a long road trip!!! Better hope Santana pitches a good game today!!
  3. Yes!!!! He needs to play smarter, not harder, he needs to realize that he shouldn't try to make a spectacular catch on every ball, save the hi-lite reel catches for the bottom of the ninth or a playoff game! He doesn't need to be superman, he just needs to use his natural speed and talent. He's worth more to the Twins on the field than on the injured list and taking the risk of that diving, spectacular catch that has a high chance of injuring himself is not smart.
  4. Best line in the whole article!! Patience is a virtue!!!!
  5. Nice to read a commentary from someone who isn't ready to jump off the next bridge they see and that doesn't think that Terry Ryan is an imbecile.
  6. On the other hand competition is good. And don't forget Berrios. May the best five win. Good luck to Duffey tonight!!!
  7. I still think something will happen with Pelfrey, he won't be on this team at the end of the season, he'll get traded (for a minor prospect) sometime in August after passing thru waivers to some team that needs another starter. Also it won't hurt May's long-term development to spend a few weeks in the pen, in fact, the Twins may find that strikeout reliever that they've been looking for. A lot of TD posters have predicted the bullpen is where May would eventually end up anyway.
  8. Good article Seth!!! It strikes a nice balance between yes, it would be nice to acquire someone but its not the end of the world if the Twins do nothing. And points out that doing nothing means that the prospects the Twins have will have time to develop -- instead of playing for someone else!!!
  9. Thats pretty much the theme of this whole post, some posters think that trades have to be made just because the Twins are contending, and other posters think its foolish to throw away their draft picks now for a team that has a lot of holes. Personally I'm just going to enjoy the ride.
  10. In hindsight its easy to say it was a bad trade but I'm sure at the time Bill Smith thought it was a good trade - he was going for it. And thats what some TD posters are advocating, going for it, making some trades to strengthen SS, catcher, RP, because the Twins are in contention, the opportunity doesn't come along that often, etc. Thats why I brought up Ramos for Capps, you don't know whether a trade will be good or bad until later, any trade that Terry Ryan makes to go for it could be good - or bad.
  11. I didn't say you did, I was just bringing up Ramos for Capps as a bad example of what can happen if you 'go for it'.
  12. Can you say "Ramos for Capps"? Smith was going for it and we see how that worked out. And as far as being sellers, if it would have been up to a lot of people here on TD, Perkins would have been gone last year. At some point you have to decide that you have a core of players to build around. My opinion is get a relief pitcher at a decent price, maybe by picking up his big salary, and see what happens, let the in-house catcher and SS options play out.
  13. Start by giving the every day SS job to Escobar, see if he can provide better defense and pick up his batting, see if he is an every day SS or a utility player. They need to be patient with Santana, the Twins have two other examples of players that took time to develop in Plouffe and Dozier. Send him to Chattanooga (since Rochester is occupied by Polanco) and let him get his hitting stroke and confidence back. Leave Polanco in Rochester for now, let him play every day, see if he can iron out his defense. With these three battling for the starting spot and with each having the potential to be a long-term starter, I don't see the Twins making a trade, these guys need to play. After the season possibly trade one of them. Give this rotation five weeks, until the end of August, then pick two to be on the ML roster, for the hopeful playoff run.
  14. This. With Suzuki signed thru this year they'll ride him until at least this winter before they think catcher trade. A bigger need is relief pitching and I think if Ryan is going to send off any of his valuable prospects at the trade deadline it will be for relief pitching.
  15. Its tough to do but Molitor needs to give Dozier more days off or he's going to wear down like he did last year.
  16. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the Twins won't make any move at catcher at the trade deadline. It would cost too much in prospects to get any type of substantial upgrade. I wouldn't even bet on them doing anything this off season, I think its the TD community that is unhappy with Suzuki, not the Twins, they'll let Suzuki's contract run out and hope one of the minor league guys, Garver or Turner learns how to hit.
  17. I'm wondering if May was moved to the bullpen so they could showcase Pelfrey from now until the trade deadline, a couple of good starts and teams looking for another starter might bite. I agree on Plouffe too, but only if a team overpays. An off season trade would maximize his value, get teams in a bidding war for him. Plus it gives you more time to see if Sano is ready and if Arcia is out of his funk. As far as if the Twins are buyers or sellers, I say its too soon, give it a couple more weeks until the end of July, then this discussion is relevant.
  18. Good review Seth! Thanks!! I hope the Twins cycle thru these internal candidates rather than some of the has-beens that have been released by other teams. What makes the Twins think that they can get something out of them if they failed with other teams?? Reclamation projects are fine in the off season, maybe the player is still healing from an injury, maybe they've added another pitch but in mid-season if they've been release they're failures. Plus lets see what we have internally, and if nothing else give them some experience. I also would have liked to see Pelfrey to the pen instead of May. He's gone after this year, give May the starts to help the Twins in 2016.
  19. Or does it mean a 14 man staff?? Probably not but if they think they need 5 starters and 8 relievers now, how will they work it out with only 7 relievers? Especially if they have a couple of blowouts/short starts.
  20. Your mention of the Big Red Machine brought back good memories!! When I was in the Navy in San Diego me and a buddy could get seats on the third base line cheap, put four beers in your coat pocket, bag of sunflower seeds, and then we'd get to watch Bench, Rose, Morgan, Perez, etc. After the game we'd play frisbee in the parking lot until the traffic cleared. Good times!!! Hopefully Buxton is still around during his injury stint to watch how a real base stealer gets it done.
  21. Only time will tell. He gets ANOTHER long stint on the disabled list to think about how he plays and what he should be doing differently. I know when I heard he was hurt sliding head first my first thought was "dumb chit". I hope he proves me wrong.
  22. I was listening to Dan Gladden on the radio broadcast and his comment was something to the affect of 'they don't block the plate if you come in spikes first'. The kid has a lot to learn, and its more than technique, he needs to learn how to play smarter.
