  1. This year the team saw Dozier and Florimon pick up their games. Next year would be Arcia, Hicks and Gibson., maybe Calabello. The similarities are the hit a misses without anyone really jumping out to be a superstar to carry the team.
  2. Thanks for the post. It is nice to read that our young pitchers are in good hands.
  3. You fail to even acknowledge that there is a difference in the career trajectories for the internationals versus domestic FA. If Ryan does not add multiple near ready major league talent as well as a high quality FA this off season then there probably shouldn't be much support for Ryan. On the other hand, even if he does do that, there still will be the negatives with scenarios based in what they believe to be true lining up criticisms.
  4. I guess the point you missed is that these players would be in their prime throughout the contract. Ryan is adverse to paying declining players a lot of money for multiple years. These FA are not in that situation. This is a situation that Ryan has not been in before so you do not know what he will do.
  5. The distinction between the international free agents and the 6 year free agents available to sign are twofold. The 6 year free agent at some point in a long term contract will be in decline. How steep or soon is the unknown. The international free agents will be in their prime but what their ceiling is unknown. We will see what Ryan does. If the scouts like the players and Ryan trusts the scouts, there is hope.
  6. When in Rome, do as the Romans.
  7. Now Mike, really. Smith had All Stars he inherited. He had draft choices from Hunter signing elsewhere. He had top 100 prospects in the minor leagues. Yes Blackburn and Slowey were top 100 prospects at one point, as well as many others during his tenure. All these players that were top rated should have been traded for a few up and coming players. How should have Smith known this. Easy, he didn't use advanced metrics.
  8. If the Cubs were looking to trade for international pool money from the Twins Arrietta would be preferable to the soft tossing lefthander Russin. Earlier comenters on Morneau thought that Ryan was looking for near major league ready players. The Cubs lack that in the pitching department, hence those that have shuttled between Iowa and the Cubs.
  9. No, I did not go behind the paywall. 1. Story teases are teases to get you to buy. The rules are out there and known. A couple of different stories had mentioned that the Cubs were enamored with this year's class of prospects. 2. Penalties that involve a fine are not restrictive to the Cubs. 3. If there was something earth shattering out there another site would have picked up on it by now.
  10. Oakland is praised for their use of statistics. Anyone care to explain in Billy Beanes tenure why out of his first round draft choices, Mulder, Zito, Swisher and Street were the only ones to pan out? His second round picks, about the same number. Total combined WAR round 3, -1.4. I am not saying there is anything wrong with metrics. The application does seem to have a limitation.
  11. The first article mentioned was old. Changes have been made since then. The article I pointed out was clearly written after the one that stated the Twins do not use metrics. To many the second article would lead one to believe they are working on it. To some, they will believe what they want. After all, there is a flat earth society.
  12. While it may be difficult to sign players next year, they can trade slots for prospects. Their pool money doesn't go away. They can sign as many players as they can for 250K, as they may have blown the budget by more than 15%. They can still trade players for this year's money (wouldn't Levi love a Arrietta for Twin's remaining international money trade). Do you think Cuellar and Anderson can fix Arrietta's command issues?
  13. The sophistication should be there with pitch fx to know on a major league level what pitch every pitcher threw, the outcome and what every batter did on what pitch. Pitch fx is working its way into the minor league parks. With real time results being fed worldwide on many leagues a whiz bang programmer should be able to give you whatever stat you can dream up. You can track trends in individual players. The Twins are real tight lipped about what they do. Building models to project draft, good luck. BTW, the only Ivy league school in the top 20 for statistics is Harvard.
  14. That is a lot of people in this world
  15. And you know there is no one else working with him? Assessing numbers once the database is in place is not an overwhelming job. Assessing numbers punched through a computer does not take a lot of time. Hell, Puck can find out stuff in a matter of seconds because he knows where to look. Give people credit for learning what to look at and how to look at it. Number crunching versus a backhoe? If you move dirt with a backhoe it will take a lot of time, a D-8 works much better.
  16. Yep Jack Goins does diddly for his job with the Twins.
  17. A little more recent article. It still won't convince the negative people. Minnesota Twins join 'Moneyball' era behind mystery man - TwinCities.com
  18. The question that is unanswerable is how many teams is Morneau their second choice if they can't get a better free agent?
  19. When assessing the job of a minor league coach is doing, I would look at are his players getting better at what is being coached. Chad Allen cannot turn Beresford into a power hitter, he can make him a better hitter.
  20. Tanaka's numbers look similar to Kuroda's in Japan. It wouldn't be a bad thing if Tanaka could put up Kuroda type numbers here. At 25 he would be coming into his prime.
  21. What contending team other than the Yankees or Pittsburg would Morneau be an upgrade on? Any other team he would be a pinch hitter. If you were going to give up a prospect for a rental the teans could lowball the Twins because Morales with similar numbers would also be available.
  22. Does your smart phone know a trick you don't? Find a 12 year old, they usually know.
  23. No doubt they were dropped on their heads as babies.
  24. As you can tell by tonight's game, it is the at bats when you are not striking people out that will kill you. Porcello got the 6 K, the other 15 batters pretty much had fun. Just imagine how much more fun if they had a SS that could hit a HR. Well, a little more often.
  25. I get to wear pajamas to work. I don't get to brawl. Seen some mighty nasty catfights.
