  1. The well documented deficiencies of Doumit would lead me to believe if the Twins got a similar return as they did with Butera in trade they would be lucky.
  2. As much as the Twins are fascinated with control pitchers does the statistic bear out that it might be harder to find a great control pitcher than a dominating flamethrower.
  3. Deduno was the only issue I was speaking about. In terms of PTC I remember reading a Powers column one time and Anderson was talking about was what he has meant all along was attack the strike zone. The problem with the Twins is in execution. You can call it pitch to contact, flamethrow, or any other style. If the pitching style was what the pitchers were capable of the Twins pitchers are doa on execution of said style. In clearer terms. ain't none of them going to be confused with Greg Maddux who never struck a lot of people out but he won a lot of hardware..
  4. If you bothered to look at Forbes you would know that the Twins out revenue KC by 50 million. So I would have to agree with you there is no distinction between the teams in terms of ability to spend money.
  5. In almost every other statistical number Deduno is significantly better than last year. Strikeouts are down, but the results are better. Which would you prefer?
  6. Once again I have to post this for you. Try reading it and remembering. Marlins offered Albert Pujols $275 million
  7. And, you know, someone says that there are more factors than money and BAM, not possible.
  8. Context of trying to do what is totally missing. If Albers had a pattern of pitching then no he shouldn't use the same pattern over again. Clubs are quick to pick up tendencies. If Gardenhire gave more of an explanation then other clubs would know what to look for. They may know by now after looking at the tapes.
  9. Pujols had a larger offer from Miami. Maybe the VAST majority of contracts are the largest ones offered. I don't know. I don't have access to that information. I am glad you do.I am glad you have access to the insights of a players reasoning why they sign where they do. You can intellectualize all you want, but you still only have speculation. It is not in the player's interest to say they signed somewhere else for less. Would a team let out that they had a higher bid and were rejected and give specifics? (Of course you are going to say yes). That is not done. Believing that it is only about the money allows you an excuse to say why a player did not come here.Greinke may have said that he went to the team that offered him the most money, but he did not say that all were allowed to bid on his services. If it is only about the money, why are there no trade clauses negotiated into the free agent contract? You asked for a player that signed for less than other teams offered in the IFA market. I gave you one. It met the criteria.
  10. If one can't praise the recent signings then you should also chastise those that rip also. If it is to early to tell success, it is to early to lament failure.
  11. Let us hope that the chip stays on Gonslaves' shoulder for 20 some years.
  12. did you like totally miss the point? The Dodgers had to spend to get into contention. For the Twins to be in contention with what they have they would have to do likewise and have other players step up their game. If the Twins made one addition (and thus one good subtraction) it would not make the Twins a good team. The negative threads would continue.
  13. Schmidt made himself into a gold glove player, Killebrew did not. Schmidt hit 25 less home runs but has a higher OPS and OPS+ Bo Jackson? altered reality
  14. Hisashi Iwakuma turned down Oakland. The next year he signed with Seattle for less money. True he made up for it with the next contract, but there were no guarentee it would work. Generaly you can't prove your "intuitive" hypothesis is correct either. You don't have the details.
  15. Calvin was tighter with money than the Pohlads ever could be,
  16. Considering the Twins need Hicks to become an average hitter, Willingham to recover, Gibson to improve, and Arcia to improve, the holes to fill are still large. They need a number 1 and 2 starter, a 3b, 1b and another corner outfielder in order to contend. And a backup plan for when 4 of the 9 players above do not work out. To fill those positions via free agency they would have to spend like the Dodgers.
  17. Is a pitcher that will give you a 2-2.5 WAR an upper tier pitcher?
  18. what makes you think that Lincecum, Jimenez, Johnson, Santana or Haren can regain the form that made them great?
  19. The power hitting could last longer than the speed. Buxton could cave a career similar to Tori Hunter. Sano could have career like Mike Schmidt. Schmidt was the highest paid player for 4 years. Sano would end up with the largest total contract if they both reach their peak potential.
  20. Top 30 prospect lists are nice. They are no indication of how the talent will develop. Look at how hard it is to get 18-23 year olds right. The 2003mlb draft had 37 first rounders including comp picks . 10 years later only 5 have accumulated a war of 15 by baseball reference numbers. 10 have not seen the majors, 10 have not accumulated a war of 2. The 2003 draft had 42 picks by the A's. 4 of them have made it to the majors. The only player above a WAR level of 2 was traded for Milton Bradley in a steal for the Dodgers. Tampa Bay had 50 selections with John Jaso being the best player by WAR. 9 other players were all less than 2 WAR level players. The Rays had one other player of note that draft. They did get the most out of Delmon Young.
  21. If satire is done with non caustic wit or irony, that would be fine?
  22. Vernon Wells had an untradeable contract. He has been moved twice. Feldman was the only player signed last winter that was traded. That does not support an argument for signing players to be shopped. Impeding first time free agents were shopped that had some value.
  23. An uneducated guess would be a top ten prospect that is a pitcher, another top ten prospect, and a top 20 prospect. As the Boston Globe guy said, the Twins have so many holes it would be difficult for them. In a heartbeat the trade would happen if the prospects didn't include Buxton, Sano, Rosario, or Meyers. One of the prospect would have to have power hitting potential for the Marlins.
  24. At this point wouldn't it be better to scout the players a little more and wait until the last minute to sign some players? There should be a lot more season to assess talent.
  25. Not to be nitpicky but you are making a huge assumption that what was offered was a decent prospect.
