  1. Arietta's 5.75 ERA the last 3 years does not make him anything more than filler on a roster. Strop was a mop up reliever at best in Baltimore. as well as for his career. People see the speed of his fastball. The teams do not use him as an 8th inning guy for a reason. Hence the Burton comp doesn't hold
  2. Chicago received the equivalent of PJ Walters and Jeff Gray. The Feldman trade in no way enhanced the future of Chicago unless it was the cash considerations.
  3. The current offensive production outside of RBI of Morneau is comparable to Overbay after 2010. The next contract Overbay signed was for 5 million. I don't think the inflation in baseball contracts would make him a 10 million kind of player unless you are touting his RBI total as a significant stat.
  4. If Gardenhire is playing for the 3 run home run then he ought to be fired. Never enough on base, no one with power to bring them in if there is.
  5. The traded away player was a de facto free agent, no longer playing gold glove defense.
  6. What would last year have been like if Liriano pitched like he is this year, Baker not injured and Pavano returned to 2010 form and not have been injured? You may guess at the front office motives for signing what they did but put on FO rose collared optimistic glasses and you would have thought you could compete. If you viewed 2011 as the aberration and a return to form for 2012 the you might think you could compete. Then the arms fell off and 2012 went the way it did.
  7. So far from the game tonight you know that Hosmer and Moustkas can still hit inferior pitching.
  8. Baseball Prospectus | Future Shock: Organizational Rankings, Part 2 2010 Baseball prospectus had KC rated at 10, the Twins at 8 in rating the team's prospects overall
  9. As pitchers learn what you don't do the batter has to adjust to what the pitcher throws. Hosmer and Moustakas have to adjust as well. As the Royals became a lot more relevant it became more important for the pitchers to be more careful with what they throw. The difference in ERA for the starting pitchers for the Royals might be near 2 runs. Pitching against the Royals you have to pitch better because you are not going to score as many runs. The playing to the level of your opponent may be a factor.
  10. Before the 2011 season Moustkas had already played at the AAA level, Hosmer at the AA level. Sano had not played above A ball, Buxton rookie to get similar ratings. That is a big difference when you compare and contrast them. The year before Moustakas was at 80 and Hosmer was not in the top 100 (apolgies if I missed) when they were playing near the same level of ball as Buxton and Sano. BA has pretty good luck projecting good players at 8, 9, and 10. The last player before the KC duo to not preform as well as expected was 2008 Franklin Morales
  11. Santana was still in low A ball when selected. It was not unrasonable on Houston's part to think that a team would not carry someone on their 25 man roster to keep him. That is a little different than Pressly's situation
  12. The statement that you have to spend money to make money is true. It is also is true that you can't draw a line of causation between spending and the product. I am shocked that someone of your rank can't see how both statements are true. The team has to spend to upgrade but it has to spend wisely. As usual, they will turn something up from the scrap heap.
  13. My isn't that nice. The comments were on Marcum because they were touting his effectiveness over the last month. Aspects of his pitching have been great for Marcum. The end result though has not been. The issue is small sample size. The numbers have trended a certain direction. Would have they done so if he faced Saint Louis or Colorado twice? Don't know one way or another. When the Mets go on a road trip the world will find out. If you have more time to kill you can also discover that I was on the side of the Twins should sign Marcum.
  14. Which is the problem with small sample sizes and getting to pitch against the Marlins twice to say how well someone is pitching. Marcum gives up the big inning. Every other number will look great but the ERA.
  15. And a 5.2 era in the last 30 days
  16. Two of their starters and two of their relievers were drafted by Oakland. Milone anf Parker did not see time in the Oakland minor league system to be considered developed by them. Without Colon they would be in a world of hurt as none of their other starters has an ERA+ of over 100
  17. Deduno's ERA is at 3.2. I'll take that over a higher k/9. His k% last year of 16% would indicate he is not a high strikeout pitcher.
  18. 2006 Twins needed an outfielder/DH and another SP so you only had to count on either Bonser or Liriano to develop and not both. Ryan signed an .800 OPS guy who essentially laid an egg with the Twins. Had Ryan signed a pitcher that year my answer would be yes. The following year they were making Pohlad money. They spent 4 mill on Ortiz and Ponson. They still made a 14 mill profit. That 18 mill could have been better spent to follow up on a very good team to have made it better. Is it Pohlad who never saw a dollar he did not like to keep, or is it Ryan? I think the Twins spent in 91 because McPhail bet on how good they could be and talked Pohlad into approving to spend the money. I don't think Ryan could do that.
  19. I looked at your list from the 20 largest contracts of which you highlighted 8. From that list of 8 my assertion was that it was more likely that an elite pitcher was more likely to resign with his old team than a new one. It had nothing to do with free agents in general. My other assertion was that it would be hard to find elite pitching on the free agent market. Again, that has nothing to do with free agents in general. Is that clear enough for you? I did not say one was better the other in this thread. If I said it somewhere else then go find it.
  20. You provided a list of contracts of pitchers that were good contracts. Except for Buerhle they were all players that resigned with the team they played for the previous season. I do not disagree that you can't sign a pitcher to a long contract and have it work out. That does not extrapolate to signing free agent pitchers that switch teams will work out. Your list says smart teams resign their good pitchers.
  21. Not to be critical but the list of contracts of free agents that worked out for the most part are people who resigned with their team from the previous year. While over a 15 year period you can find six large contracts that worked you also point out that to get these players as free agents is almost impossible.
  22. rbi to opportunity is nearly identical in your numbers. They would be equally "clutch" in terms of getting runners in. A higher OPS would probably lead you to Mauer scoring more runs than Morneau. Then there would be the debate that Mauer scores more runs because he had Morneau behind him while Morneau had what for clutch behind him?
  23. A pitcher without a plus pitch does not make for a good reliever nor a good long reliever. That is the problem with a good part of the starting staff on Rochester. Darnell is a starter who finally seems to be doing well, doesn't make him a relief pitcher. Achter hasn't even had a half season at NB. He will get to Rochester after a half season at NB. Iberra is blocked only by his own ability. If I had typed it "actually blocked " it would have been clearer, but then you would have nothing to attack. If I had thought anything of your list I would not have said what I did, but a you are right. Then there wouldn't be comments like this from you. Have a nice weekend.
