  1. The starters Oakland have drafted and developed in the last 10 years were Cahil, Straily, Griffin and Gray. Only Cahil has been a starter for more than 2 years in the majors. Same time period the starters the Twins drafted and developed were Baker, Gara, Slowey and Gibson. Yes Slowey declined after his first full year in the majors. That is why I would wait as Oakland pitchers are completing their first full year. They have traded for major league ready pitching. After a down year in 2011 they traded their players to reload. When the Twins started a down year, they did not really have that kind of talent to move for more talent.
  2. I must have missed something. When did Anderson go to be the bullpen coach?
  3. I guess he got them motivated today.
  4. Although the smart ones can name quite a few, most pitchers do not do well their first year in the majors. If the best coaches are in the majors to refine their technique, start them in the bullpen next year to have that coach work with them.
  5. Try Cleveland. Look at their record for drafting starting pitching. Archer they traded, Guthrie back in 02, and traded. They seem to be doing OK at the moment
  6. I think the steroid era let the power pitchers pitch longer. Jiminez looks like he lost the real blazing ball at 26, Verlander is going strong at 30. There would be average things like Pitcher Aging Curves: Introduction | FanGraphs Baseball But in my opinion the individual variabily between pitchers would be hard to predict. Injuries probably play a part.
  7. Perhaps you should read the article. It is on the stib website
  8. His negotiations with the Cubs ought to provide a little clue as to his goal og getting what he could out of Detroit to sign with them. What proof do you have that would lead you to say he wanted to pitch for the Twins?
  9. Lohse, Soriano, Ortiz, Kuroda, LaRoche, Swisher and Bourn wish you were correct in thinking anyone offered a qualifying offer should get a 5 year contract. Only Hamilton and Upton of the group requiring compensation received 5 year contracts.
  10. For the most part you are starting players who have no mlb jobs lined up for next year. If they do not play like they care, they can start them out in the minors or not re-sign the 4AAAA players. I would think they have a clue that they should be playing like their job is on the line. Albers has pitch a lot more innings than he ever has his career. He might be getting a little deader of an arm.
  11. Some very good insights. One inflammatory line that made me laugh. Thanks for taking the time to write this.
  12. Cest moi. I have always thought the Pohlads directed with their wallet.
  13. Forbes said on one of their recent valuations that the average revenue per fan for the Twins is $50. If attendance continues at 25000 per game that would lose 44 million in revenue. If ratings drops because the Twins are bad, there goes more revenue as the Pohlads own the radio station. Sometimes you have to spend money to make money.
  14. Sorry, didn't make it clear, I said last winter they should have traded for him. before the season started. After the big 2 I didn't see anything much to build around and said they should look to trade for an impeding free agent like Nolasco. IIRC I was shot at pretty hard for bringing up Nolasco as a potential Twin.
  15. I do believe there are about 9 months left in the signing period, what is the rush. Was there a quote somewhere that said he was done signing prospects?
  16. Fans go to see the players, not the manager. Fans come out to see special events when you are winning. That would be why they are not making a big deal of it. On the other hand, if it was 2 90+ wins the 2 previous years, they might have done something.
  17. Although you never know, why wouldn't the Dodgers re-sign Nolasco? He is pitching better than he ever has for them. Billingsly might take a while to get back to form so they do have a need. What the Dodgers gave up for Nolasco the Twins could have found in their system last winter. This kind of situation is why I had said the Twins should have traded for him last winter. At worst by tendering him you would get a prospect back better than what you gave up.
  18. I am sure that Joe Mauer is really happy that he can't play. I am sure that with symptoms, which he has or otherwise he would be cleared to play, he is a real joy to be around. I bet he even really likes not knowing what the heck is going to happen. Especially after he has seen the career of Morneau post concussion. It has been about three weeks and symptoms come back. I am sure he likes that. The powers that be should have said that Mauer wasn't feeling well. They said irritable. HIPPA violation, fine them.
  19. Mauer is injured with something that has no timetable for return nor treatment plan. To take that story where you did is an interesting way to read a story.
  20. Haven't seen Cuddy play in a couple of years. UZR 150 says they both stink in the field now. Willingham less so than Cuddyer. Over the last almost 2 seasons I would say that pitchers pitch around Willingham more than they do Cuddyer. I would also think that Cuddyer would not be having this good of season if he were with the Twins. On the other hand, Cuddyer is probably a better leader. I would say that Pamelee is a downgrade at 1B/rf from Cuddy and Willingham is an upgrade over Delmon. If May and Worley don't work out then overall the club lost.
  21. First off you said there was no ideal free agent. To me there is, one that performs at a level you paid for or higher. You don't have to care whether a player is over or underpaid. It seems like an interesting way to judge talent level if you judge a player by the size of a free agent contract. Over the last 2 years Willingham has done more for his team than Cuddyer has for the Rockies. Yet you degrade him because his contract is less than Cuddyer's. Yes there was money left unspent. You are right in that they should have done something. I guess you never figured out that there is a limited number of quality free agents out there to spend that money on. There were only 6 16/yr million dollar contracts given out the last two years. Supply is kind of limited, especially when they have a team they want to play for. You can't always get what you want.
  22. I am told to take what a player says after he signs as gospel as that was his intent. It is not what I expect him to say, players are honest and forthcoming about their signing process after they sign. The Twins could have signed Greinke after all, He said he signed with the team that would pay the most even if it was the worst team after he signed his contract. Willingham's contract is reflective of where he was expected to be. He is neither overpaid nor underpaid. Is that a difficult concept these days? Nowhere did I say it was a good contract because it was cheap. Bad form to try to make a comment what it should be fairly clear it is not. An aging play, Carlos Beltran. Signed a much higher dollar contract. He is really neither overpaid, nor underpaid, hence a good contract for both, even though it is not a cheap contract. CoCo Crisp is underpaid. He did not decline if anticipation of a decline was the reason for his 7m/tr contract. Maybe he just liked playing in Oakland.
  23. The slope of decline will always vary from player to player. Speed usually goes first, arms second, power last. Skills that deteriorate factor in with age. Willingham was brought in for power. His contract is not the one of an elite player, nor of a very good player but of an average one. Is he in decline or having a bad year? If you say bad year then is Prince Fielder in decline? If signing a player like Willingham thinking he is going to decline is a bad idea then signing a Sanchez might fit the category. Might not either. Really doesn't matter. I am told that what a player says is gospel so here is a quote I found for you. Sanchez made it clear he wanted to be with Detroit after signing with the team, via John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press. "I just wanted to come here," Sanchez said as he wore his Tigers jersey. "It's not about if they're going to be in the race. It's where I want to be." It wasn't about the money, it was where he wanted to be.
  24. It is so easy to find fault. 2012 Willingham was the perfect FA. What is it this year but cries that the Twins should have traded him. Try Hicks out in CF a year too early, doesn't work. Disparaging comments about the thinking capacity of the FO and then many boderline players are mentioned or unrealistic scenarios are put forth as a better solution are what comes back at the Twins. There is and always will be a never ending supply of ways to criticize. It is fine for people to criticize. Then it is also fine for people to respond to the thinking with a different viewpoint and not have it dismissed as excuse making.
  25. Tanaka will probably get the same posting fee as Darvish did. 50 million. The club would have leverage as Texas did so a 6/60 contract would be somewhat close for a guess at a contract. That is a lot of money. First the 50 or even 60 million posting fee. In reality that is cheap. To get a pitcher in their prime like him you either have to be lucky in the draft or trade for one. To trade for one you would have to probably give up a Buxton or a Sano. To replace their potential production with a FA you are not going to be able to do that for 60 million. A 6/60 contract is cheap if he is a 3+ WAR pitcher. All he has to be is similar to Buehrle to do that over the life of the contract. Again, that would be a bargain
