  1. Hochevar is still arb eligible so he would have to be non tendered to be a free agent, salary dump to be available for trade. There are reasons why he was a failed starter, can the Twins staff fix that?
  2. The question was trading prospects, not significant ones. Ryan has traded prospects before with good results. Some meh results. No real we screwed ourselves results in giving up prospects. Besides, I thought a good GM was suposed to turn nothing prospects into players.
  3. The prospect received was nothing great.
  4. In terms of Christianity and Obamacare I would say that a majority of the religions are Christian in name only. Paul, Martin Luther, John Calvin et al founded religions based on what they believed Christianity to be. Mike wants wins might better know where the money goes but there is a large percentage that goes into events that happen because of nothing the person did wrong. Many cancers, juvenile diabetes, any disease associated with genetics, influenza, etc. Some thing we didn't have a clue about and caused harm to people, cigarettes to the WWII fighters for example. Preventative medicine is a good thing. As a society I have no problem us paying for it. We pay for a lot of bad stuff that never happened to us. We pay for a lot of things to prevent bad things from happening to others. I will probably never visit Acadia National Park. I pay a miniscule amount to that and other places I will never see. That should be part of society. Healthcare should be no different.
  5. I really don't think most people think it is any one person's fault. When there is a fire Ryan the Twins stink because Ryan did (insert opinion) the unspoken reaction might "Might not have helped the situation" followed by a launch into what happened during the Smith Era. I would add that anything Ryan is alleged to have done wrong was fixable by Smith.
  6. Four little pesky problems 1. The Twins need impact players. 2. So do other teams 3. There really aren't that many of them available. 4. Parameters to sign players puts a little bit of a limit on what they can do. I think the decline years they reference in the statement are the late years of the A-rod contract. There is decline and still great and older like Carlos Beltran, or Derek Jeter. Injury history and commitment to training and not the age number is what you need to look at
  7. SO that lack of talent on the current team then could be traced back to the inability of Smith to make trades and get value for his players when he could. You knock the Garza trade but not the Santana one. You really think he could have got something back for a back of rotation pitcher like Blackburn? With only one good season do you think Liriano would have fetched what Gio Gonzales did? If you spotted red flags, wouldn't the other geaneral managers? What specifically has Art Howe, Ken Macha, Bon Green, or Bob Melvin done that is new age baseball as they are Beane's hires?
  8. Crain will get much more than 3 million and will land somewhere where he has a shot to be a closer.
  9. If you expect May to be a starter for many years to come why would you start his service time early? Some but at this point the Twins have no reason not to keep him as a starter. Achter and Ibarra maybe should have been called up. I don't think it would have made a difference career wise for them. The 9 innings Martis pitched is insignificant.
  10. The Feldman contact guess will be off. He is going to get a raise. When last fall the speculation about how much it would take to sign a player most came back low. Buy a TD handbook and see how far off knowledgeable people can be. IIRC there was a post from someone thinking that Sanchez would get an 8 million/yr contract
  11. How you phrase things can set it up as inflammatory. Making a statement and coming across as a challenging someone to have an idea that is different. Labeling that person into a group so as to divide them away from what you are. It also sets up an expectation of negativity like trolling. Example The shy is blue. I can't wait for the gloom and doom people say. BTW, The response I have had from some people in regards to the use of statistics and other comments makes me not disagree with the underlined statement.
  12. If that is the case you will not like 2014 Guess the baseball exec On chasing big name free agents this offseason: “I don’t think we’re going to get to where we need to be through free agency for the short term, honestly. Given the needs that we have and where we are and the likely price tags on the market, I don’t think we’ll have the ability to add multiple impact pieces in free agency.” Given where we’re positioned right now, it’s not something we can count on. Are we going to work our asses off and try to make it happen through free agency or through trade or through development? Yeah, but it’s not something we’re going to rely upon. We know we are not going to be able to just pick and choose what we want in free agency and wake up and be the organization we want to be. “We know we’re not going to be able to pick and chose what we want in free agency,” Give you a hint. He has 8 players under contract for 47 million and a 274 million dollar revenue stream. If Theo Epstein is saying that about this winter's free agent group, where does that leave the Twins? The last line would explain from a different source from Ryan why money wasn't spent.
  13. But you claim that St Louis has drafted well and do not refute that the Twins have drafted poorly, hence the question
  14. Yes there is talent to be had throughout the draft. What objective standard do you use to judge if a team drafts well? IE. number of players that make it to the majors, some benchmark of career war? Team victories?
  15. How would you have expected Billy Beane to have run the Twins any differently if he would have taken over in 07?
  16. Atlanta 1987 to 1990, Houston the last 3 years KC 04-06 Mets 77-79, never mind 4 of the first 5 years. Those were the first 4 bad teams I could think of. Oakland was probably that bad after all their players left in the 70's Drop your demand to 3 90+ loss seasons and you would find almost all team would have that kind of down cycle at some point. I don't think there is a whole lot of difference between 90 and 96 losses, your team is bad.
  17. As your quote is from last winter that would be considered a long time ago. The front office could have learned in the past 10 months.
  18. One I said SORT OF veto power. SORT OF. Not has. Sort of. Do you think if Ryan is told the trade is bad he would do it anyway? Yes, there are those here who would say yes.
  19. IIRC Ryan said he runs everything past the stats guy as a sort of veto if it is a bad idea stats wise.
  20. I do not know why people would doubt that Ryan would have the scouts learn metrics. It actually makes sense as they are the ones evaluating players. It is not impossible to figure out. The math is no harder than algebra. The concept is baseball, that is the part they are supposed to understand.
  21. No player brought up through the Twins organization other than Mauer was a can't miss prospect. Elements of their game were added to. Morneau became an MVP. With recent players, clear progress was made with Revere, Span, Florimon, and Dozier. Is the recent lack of talent being developed due to the lack of talent to be developed or those doing the developing? The number of minor league players with potentially bright futures would lead me to say the former although the lack of development by Plouffe and Parmelee gives a little pause.
  22. If the only position player people can come up with is Valencia, the Twins team is doing well. Valencia had 170 AB this year. He did well this year in a very specialized and limited role.
  23. Santana's K rate went down after leaving the Twins. Lohse's K rate has fluctuated yearly as it did while he was pitching for the Twins. Garza's rate went up after 2 part seasons with the Twins. Not with the Twins his K rate is7.69, with the Twins 7.11. Most pitcher's K rates go up after their first full season. Garza is no different. The jump is not dramatic. Liriano's K rate is not much different than with the Twins. Pavano, outside of his contract year and last year here he pitched better here than anywhere else with a lower K rate. Some of the other pitchers brought in were viewed as bad before they got here and not much different when they left.
  24. Terry Francona had a very different team from the one that Manny Acta managed ( I might state the obvious, also a very different team than the one Eric Wedge managed in 09). Unless you think that adding Swisher, Kazmir and Born had no positive effect for the team and that the trades were just shuffling similar players back and forth. The 2012 and 2013 Indians are vastly different teams.
