  1. There are time I think some Twins fans are like my brother's ex-wife. She never ceased at bringing up past perceived transgressions, nor capable of accepting increased positive actions of her spouse. It will never be good enough even though there are outside limitations as to what can be done.
  2. Threads like this make me go back to John Bonnes' article on the truth.
  3. Ryan is a scout at heart. the numbers are important. the skillset is more important. Comments made in the past in regards to players he seems to talk of skills more than numbers. He knows the numbers, the skills seem more important.
  4. If you took 4 pitchers that put up the seasons that Marcum, Dempster, Jackson and Saunders had in place of the fill in pitchers Willihammer listed and the two signed by Ryan as FA to nearly balance out innings pitched between the two groups, you still have a 96 loss team. The claim that Ryan was right to be crucified because he didn't sign these guys is not proven.
  5. When looking at free agent signings Pelfrey and Correia pitched 338 IP and combined for a 4.65 ERA. Try to find two pitchers that signed short term contracts similar to those two for comparison.
  6. When it comes to looking at the Twins, looking for the truth is filtered by the observer bias.
  7. Alex Brunett comes to mind as he went from the Twins to Jays to Baltimore then the Cubs
  8. Fairness in evaluation can not be accomplished when nobody can agree on what exactly a general manager does or doesn't do. Smith had a free agent to sign andd a star player to either trade or extend. Either he is capable of doing it from day one or he shouldn't have a leadership job. It is a game of blame someone for any mistake made. There isn't much Pollyanna on this board, just disagreements on processes that are not really known. Maybe when he retires Ryan will sit down with Bonnes and write an e book. Then we will all know the proocess and can rehash these issues.
  9. I would take from the kicking on Arroyo'ss tires that the Twins are not very confident in what they have available too them. Arroyo is probably holding out for a third year. I do not think anyone wants to give him it.
  10. Wonder if Rakutan could demand money from the player to be let out of their contract?
  11. If they turned down Will Meyers straight up I doubt the Twins will have a package Beane likes. Lower level prospects might be to the A's liking rather than major league spare parts
  12. 1 year 8.25 good for AJ
  13. How is paying a guy 14 million for one season an underpay when the next year you do not have the player or would have to extend another qualifying offer? The second stretch in logic is that the the teams wanted the players at a higher salary to begin with. You may view it as a mistake, but what is the bassis for that kind of salaries for these players. There is none.
  14. That none of the pitchers signed even came close to a 14 million a year contract should be reason enough not to think they should have.
  15. If Anderson is available depends on what the A's think of Milone. With Milone as your emergency starter and bullpen guy then Anderson is not available. With Milone in the rotation Anderson becomes an extremely expensive bullpen guy., Anderson could then be traded for a decent bullpen arm and prospect. That is the Oakland A Way. I could see it happening if they liked the deal. They need a closer, if they liked Burton enough, as he was originally drafted by them, the Twins could swing a deal.
  16. Kazmir will benefit from a great pitching coach in Curt Young. That will make Oakland look like they got a steal. It also might means that Colon is done in Oakland and would be available for a 1 year deal. Nolasco vs Kazmir? Coulda, woulda, shoulda. I don't think it was either/or. The better hindsight argument might be should have they spent more moneyon Kazmir rather than sign Hughes as your risk/reward player. I would agree on that.
  17. Hughes would be less of a commitment than Arroyo. Maybe more of an upside, maybe not. The question probably should be Kazmir versus Hughes. The best mid tier pitcher option might be Kazmir based on past production. Kazmir could regress rather than progress. Hughes on the other hand has a chance for progression. He also fits the team profile for having a mental block playing in Yankee Stadium. For either of them to get the 4/50+ contract it would take a couple years of solid production. , so I think either could be had for a 2 year contract and no more.
  18. duplicate, sort of. screwed up the edit somehow
  19. Why Hughes would look for a 2 year deal is to compare him to Kazmir. Kazmir reestablished himself this year and is looking at 2/16. One year of good production is not going to get you cashed in. It will take 2 years. Hughes would still be under 30 and in line for the monster contract.
  20. Offering 4 poor players for Homer Bailey
  21. 37 year old on opening day Arroyo (2/24/77) for 30 million or Pelf for 10.Can Pelfrey be the starter he was in New York in average war? That would be as good as the recent production from Arroyo.
  22. The fallacy in the conclusion by Fast is that a strike one or two that should have been a ball leads to outs. They did not investigate the number for called third strikes. How many batters did the Twins lose with a 2 strike count?
  23. No field can make a pitcher what they are not unless the fence is so far out so as to hinder the ability to hit a HR. Then you would need faster outfielders than Willingham and some of the others being played out there recently.
  24. Age 37 and 38 might not be a problem. The only way the third year should be added if it were of less value and had incentives, or if the total contract of three years gets you a bit above those contracts that are for two years.
  25. Starters in name only. Actual usage on a major league roster remains to be seen Use the adjective "capable major league" to go with starter and your count becomes countable on the finger on the right hand of Scottie from Star Trek
