  1. Are you outright dismissing the limitations of pitch f/x ? Correct more often is hardly a solution
  2. The Bonafacio thread would disagree. If Diaz can be an above average hitter it would make him useful.
  3. Getting back to the worth of Diaz, if he has a ceiling of utility player/2b then a reasonable signing bonus and make good from there wouldn't be a bad plan.
  4. Periodically go look for your dream car.
  5. As was said earlier, pitching to contact is throwing strikes. Near as I can figure, you need to throw strikes at some point to strike people out. The question before that one he said "I tell the batter in my head that you can't touch this." You can pitch to contact if they can't make contact with what you pitch. A pitch with poor movement and/or poor location is going to get hit regardless the pitching coach's philosophy, The parade of pitchers through the starting rotation the last few years that now are pitching elsewhere should be proof of that. PJ Walters will not be having a 24 K% in KC with a different coach.
  6. You are correct in that PJ Walters and Pedro Hernandez were on the roster for parts of May last year. When Gibson finally did get to the majors, what in Gibson's performance said that it was a mistake to leave him down there? That he pitched good games with good results is not an excuse. Liam Hendricks has done the same.
  7. Injuries and illness have robbed many players for the Twins from a career they could have had. Morneau got the concussion and was never the same. You couldn't say it was going to last a whole career, but if it had there would be a 3 way conversation about the third best all time Twin. Lyman Bostock was developed by the Twins. Not an illness, but he was in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Santana and the shoulder. Plenty of players who spent a significant portion of the careers as a Twin had their careers derail. Bert go anywhere on your list? Killebrew and Carewshould be at the top. If or when Mauer has a career of 15 years plus at the top of the game he can be considered for best of all time. Puckett versus Mauer. I don't think it is time yet to judge Mauer
  8. I guess you would have to look at which pitchers they are hitting. If they are hitting MLB level starters and relievers, then you have to look at the at bats to see if the pitcher was working on mastering a pitch or trying to get an out. You can be encouraged that they can hit those pitches, but it does require a little closer look at what is actually going on in the game.
  9. He signed a minor league deal with the Cubs.
  10. Any of the players signed would remain under team control for 6 years. You limit risk with a shorter contract. Conversly, if you believe he is the real deal you would sign him for as long as you can.
  11. Good luck to John. I am sure some brave soul will listen to Common enough to post when and where to vote.
  12. 38 IP. hardly a large sample size.
  13. Plouffe was a second baseman in the minors. Dozier was a SS. Parmelee and Collabello were 1B. How would you expect them to be fundamentally sound when they are learning new positions at the major league level?
  14. It was condescending to call 90 win teams mediocre. They got to the playoffs. Anything could happen as you said. Not enough players rose up in enough series to carry the team. It would be hoped going forward when the team needs to add players when they are at a division championship level they pick up better than the Ponsons and Ortiz's from the available free agents.
  15. It was not a comment about posters, only the quality of the players that was assembled.
  16. I would call this season a success if by mid season there were no more threads here about adding the latest player DFA.
  17. A player in the stature of Jonathan Murphy should be more than enough.
  18. There is a device that you can put on your finger to measure oxygen saturation in a person. If it gives you a good reading you know it is working. If you get a bad number, check the patient, then and most often troubleshoot. I think that pretty much sums up defensive metrics. Small sample size could be the problem. Does he have the small sample size because he does not play out there well? Reading the ball in various outfield positions and playing bounces off walls may not be the easiest thing to do. Regardless, someone saw things they did not like to get the numberThe lack of 3B/ss time would point towards not a great arm.
  19. Thank you for your post. To me he is Clete Thomas. He brings speed but nothing else. How can someone with speed be an average to below average outfielder? Yet they list him with poor TZ and UZR numbers. He is no Revere in the field yet he has more speed. Like Thomas at some point he has shown talent. Something just doesn't seem right, like Thomas. I do agree with Doc that the guy is flexible, but I don't think his overall talent would make the team deeper. I would rather see the team trade for someone like Flores to be the bench guy. Ryan would have to give up something to get something. It would be better than the band-aid approach that failed miserably with the pitching staff.
  20. Not the intent at all. There are comments and stories that appeared to cross from game to game. To post something in a game thread is not the problem. To be part of the ongoing could be. Integrating into a group requires work. To me the game threads appear to be a core group. For a very occasional member to such group it would difficult to be part of the core. My comments were not meant to be negative towards anyone. It was offered as an observation as one of any number of reasons why someone might shy away. Game threads do allow one to see a little more of some of the personality of the posters. It is, to maybe only me, the social part of the board.
  21. There were those who accused the Twins of dumpster diving while going for pitching the last few years. In search of players for the field, there is yet another fan proposal for a one tool player.. Would positions and posts have been reversed had the Twins made a deal for this guy before he was DFA? IIRC Ben Revere with his ,331 OBP and speed was not thought of very highly as a leadoff hitter because he did not walk enough, thus leading to a lower OBP.. Bonifacio should be a free agent now, able to sign a minor league contract anywhere.
  22. The effect of the newness of Target Field on attendance was going to peak at some point. In comparison to the rest of the league, dome attendance was poor even when the team was winning. There are still plenty of casual fans at Target Field as compared to the dome. That the All Star game has not had an effect on ticket sales does not surprise me. If all you were interested in was the AllStar game it would be cheaper to buy scalped tickets than a season ticket package you do not want.
  23. I did not see the joke that launched the thread. There is a difference in how some people are allowed to speak on this board. I guess you were not one of them.
  24. A lurker or occasional poster might not care how a forum is moderated hence the lack of comments. The game thread is a little community by itself. When I have looked at them, there seems to me to be a sameness about them like a high school group. You are in it, or not. You are welcome to hang around, but the conversation started long ago. It would be work to fit oneself in.
  25. In theory 10 runs equalls a win. But you have to buy into the pitch framing is the cause of close pitches being called and that close called pitches have an effect on ERA An article referenced anothr article http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2008/5/12/506919/a-nibble-here-a-nibble-the It is on the effect of close called pitches on ERA. Nothing I have seen would lead me to believe there have been changes since.
