  1. The Twins would not be better with Mastroianni or Presley in CF, that is why they were DFA'd No doubt they were a better option than Bartlet, but that is not Scroggins' argument.
  2. 1. What does calculus have to do with baseball? Please explain because I would really love to know. The field of statistics is a completely different entity that mathematics. Any of the baseball writers spinning ideas have only used basic concepts of statistics. What they do use is a capacity to think a little bit about a problem . 2. What other options? Bonifacio's .215 for the month of May? Sizemore is hitting that for the season. Overpay for Granderson to get similar production? Nyler Morgan is a defensive liability. There were not a whole lot of options much different than what they were doing. Fuld played about as well here as anyone picked up has done. Like Bonifacio, he would have regressed back to his mean.
  3. .211 ba,.287 OBP and the numbers are going down. I would think the optimism for a return of the old Sizemore will fade as the OPS goes below .600. The possibility of a DFA is pretty good
  4. How many in management do not have a rudimentary understanding of mathematics. They all have college degrees. Ryan mat be the only one that played baseball. That there are teams out there that snap up the Mastroianis, Presleys and even Wilsons of the worlds should be a basic clue that there are not many out there. Another pretty basic concept is not everything you try works.
  5. If Moore had not traded for Shields he could have signed another pitcher that could have worked out. KC committed 22 mil over 2 years for Shields. The money could have been spent elsewhere. You might not have Shield's numbers but would be far above replacement level.
  6. Wilson may be a CF, but had not even risen above AA level. His bat would appear to be less potent than Florimon's Presley's ceiling at this point would appear to Hicks' floor. Mastro appeared to be done. They were all players of limited ability. That at some point the Twins could DFA 4players who played at various times in CF in a season means they shopped hard and were not luck in what they selected. Nothing more.
  7. This season it is like the pitchers lost the "book" on Twin's hitters. There is a hot streak by many to start out with until the other team remembers where the hole in the swing was.
  8. from one of those articles Obviously there are a lot of caveats in play here. Small sample sizes, imperfect data about when guys start and stop taking PEDs and, of course, the flaws any projection system, even one as generally reliable as ZiPS, brings to the table. Furthermore, what was done in Biogenesis might havebeen different than what done in the past. Different drugs, different effects What does anyone really know. So the known and suspected users from the part did not benefit from ando and the other roids.
  9. Maybe they are practicing at second guessing for 12 years from now when Worley is closing out a HOF career.
  10. Slowey's era+ is 87 with the Marlins vs 90 with the Twins.
  11. Thou shshoud not throw the stone straight. Jim Hoey 1:98
  12. You can talk about the Minnesota Twin study done by the University of Minnesota. It was the largest research project done on Twins
  13. History does not appear to be kind to the career of most over 30 SS. Money and years are the only 2 factors keeping anyone from signing Drew. Boras has overvalued his client. Boras continues not to budge from his demands. The end result is that he cost his client money. Boston offering the QO gave Boras the impression his client was worth that much. It was a gamble by Boston. Drew may have been worth that much yo them, but in the end I think it was a shot at Boras. Boras did not get his client the big money offer. Boston gave Boras the impression that Drew was worth more than what he was.
  14. No unwritten rule was broken unless you think your team is so bad that you can't come back 7 runs in even 7 innings. It will be a long year in Houston as the manager does not believe his team is capable of much
  15. It was a mistake to not put him on the 40 man roster so he could not walk as a 6 year milb free agent. The Twins have has success in the past resigning their milb free agents. This time they did not. In 2 years in Texas he stayed a AAA. No one traded for him, he was not promoted when the Rangers backup 2b, 3b ans ss did nothing. He is playing well now. Time will tell if he can make adjustments to what the pitchers will adjust what they throw due to the scouting of him.
  16. Drew was not on the opening day roster so he would not be subject to compensation.
  17. Right now Gibson has a high GB% and low LD%. I think it would indicate that the hitters are not making good contact. The key is that the sinker almost always has to be good or bad things happen. The data you seek would have to be from what happens when sinkerball pitchers pitch well. I don't think anyone would complain if he had a career similar to Tim Hudson or Jake Westbrook. That is what can happen if you pitch well.
  18. Is this going to be like the thread for the guy now playing for the Jacksonville Sun(AA)?
  19. IIRC Rosario was said to have tested positive for benzoylecgonine. Did anyone ever ask if Rosario ever drank the Coca Tea? That, or his issue could be diabetes.
  20. 2-3 months post op he can start lightly throwing a ball. About the only news you would have is range of motion reports and the no news is good news variety.
  21. Explain why something is stupid and you shouldn't have to use the word. If it isn't obvious from what you wrote, then it isn't stupid.
  22. People being so full of themselves is part of the charm of the site.
  23. To get some of these players the White Sox had to have the major league talent to trade, which they did. Rios and Peavey are above average players heading towards the downside of their careers. The return for these players offers youth but not necessarily even above average talent. The signing of Abreu is a different conversation. Although they may have looked good for one game against the Twins, your list other than Abreu looks like a list of replacement level players. The skill level is more important. Blast away at the Twins for not adding a higher level of skill in position players. The age is irrelevant.
  24. Eyeing the hitting projections the team would look like it would OPS somewhere around .700. One graph I saw estimates it would be between 650 and 700 runs. Essentially a league average offense
  25. It is unlikely that any of the bottom group Dave mentioned would be contributing when the games start to matter again. I do not think it unreasonable to say 1/2 of the position players won't be here when the games start to matter.
