  1. In relation to other pitchers career wise Morris looks better by the methods assessing pitchers based on FIP than on runs allowed. Please notice I did not say based on the statistic fip. If you haven't through the tread noticed preferred statistics and look at what they are based on, so be it. Sorry for the confusion. 1000 inning pitched will not as a starting pitcher get you elected into the hall of fame so why are you ranking pitchers based on that? Different eras, different runs scored, different approaches to hitting. The statistics are the same but the game changes.
  2. The argument put forth was Morris was one of the best pitchers of his era. While there are some overlaps in the careers of players Randy Johnson defined the 90's, not the 80's. For the pitchers that pitched during the 80's people can manipulate the statistics to show that within his age group he was a top pitcher for a longer period of time than most. In this thread I have not advocated that Morris be elected or later selected for HOF. I thought I clearly said the statistics would show that for the Morriscontemporaries, they all were good but not great. Fielding independent type pitching statistics were most preferred when talking of the shortcomings of Twins pitchers this winter. For Morris the runs allowed formula is preferred as it shows him in worse light.
  3. In your method of looking at players you would then consider Randy Johnson, Vida Blue and Jim Kaat contemporaries of Morris. That hardly refutes the notion that Morris was the dominate pitcher of the 1980's.
  4. Not to be terribly nit picky but Carlton was pretty much done by 1984. The Jack Morris era was 1979-1994. In that era by fwar, all that are above him are in the HOF. Gooden may have been a better pitcher but his career lasted just long enough to be qualified to be in the hall but not enough to accumulate fwar to match Morris . The list of position players with more fwar than Morriss and not in the HOF is a lot longer. Morris was a top 6 pitcher for his era. It has more to do with there were not that many elite pitchers in that same span.
  5. The question then is what do you believe you can get for that second round pick in the draft. Is signing the player worth the player you could draft. Is a few years for one player worth 6 years of another? If it is, you sign the player. Yes a player with a track record is a sure thing. I would like to think when you draft a high round player you do not think maybe this will work out. You want enough confidence to know it will work.
  6. What is the success rate of top 5 16 year old prospects versus top 50 versus the field?
  7. Significantly going over the cap also results in being only able to sign players for a limited amount the following year., 250000 or 500000 depending on how much you go over. If you like enough players one year and figure on trading your cap money the following year it would make sense to go over. If you figure they are going to change the rules again, it would make sense to go over if money is not a limiting factor.
  8. The point missed was the thinking the Twins thought he might start slow and adjust, 2 levels or not. Be mindful of the number of players that spent no time in AAA. In the past is has not been an uncommon jump. Granted it doesn't always work, but Hicks at the time was a top 100 prospect. He got a shot. It didn't work. This year Pinto looks to be penciled in as catcher. 19 whole games at AAA. Santana could impress as SS, Meyer could come out in spring training and show he belongs. AAA has not been a necessary step for players.
  9. While Hicks may have started off every level slowly, he adjusted by mid season in high A and AA. That he was not showing similar improvement at the big league level is the difference with last season compared to the previous two seasons.
  10. Teaching, social work and nursing were all considered female jobs. When there is a sustained shortage of teachers there will be pay increases. Nursing used to be a low wage job in many areas. When the good people had other options with their talents, there was enough of a shortage for wages to soar. Consider instead the source of income for teachers is the tax dollar. Despite what some people think about the clout of the teacher's union, it still hasn't resulted in higher pay. There are still more than enough warm bodies with certificates to keep the wage level down. Also some new nurses with those certificates stated that they had been found a way by their district to the door with a note not to come back once they had a few years of teaching and would cost the district money. The system in place to keep average wages low is complex.
  11. Baer calls Choo a platoon player at best in one spot, a great hitter in another. His writing leaves a lot to be desired.
  12. At this point Parmelee has all the trade value that Restovich had when he left the Twins.
  13. I do not see where Duduno, Diamond, K Johnson, Albers, Gilmartin or Worley become much more than back of the rotation starters much like Correia or Pelfrey. Correia nor Pelfrey make so much money that being in the bullpen isn't a serious blow if the former group takes a huge leap forward in their pitching ability. The fifth spot is Gibson's on scholarship until Meyer steps forward. If both pitch above average, a starter goes to the bullpen. It is refreshing to see some of the people have optimism that all the pitchers will perform to their highest level.
  14. Sands, Castellanos, and the like for the most part become Wilkin Ramirez and Clete Thomas.
  15. The assumption would be that Gibson has high upside. Various scouting reports have Gibson as a command and control pitcher. Good pitches, but not overwhelming. That puts him in the middle of the rotation. Pushing him to AAA, hardly. His own pitching will place him. To work on control it doesn't matter where he pitches.I really don't think the Twins have kept a quality starter in the minors just because they can.
  16. Japan has deeper pockets.
  17. Max ammount is the money as they had a salary cap from what I read. Perks like a place to stay, transportation and entertainment I am not sure about.
  18. It would have been in the afternoon in Korea. KBO pays foreign players a max of $300,000. Better than AAA pay, but that is not cashing in
  19. With a poor ofense it might not matter between those two pitchers. Plenty other statistics would also be missing to make a determination of which pitcher would be prefereable. One would certainly hope that a GM other than Moore would make decisions based on a few statistics. There is a difference of 100 innings there. If those missing innings were starts and you had to start a PJ Walters then the statistics would favor Pelfrey. Your team would be better off.

  21. Drew turned down 14 million for 1 year. a 4/53 like Perralta signed is a risk deal. Drew has had 2 very good seasons and a few not so good seasons with the bat. I do not see Ryan signing that kind of player. When it gets to almost spring training time, if you could coax a 3/21 kind of deal for both of the players it would make sense to sign both. I think they each should have signed their one year offers.
  22. Jokin couldn't see I was joking
  23. Was the Houston Astros being led by said creature?
  24. The negotiations with Garza and Arroyo must not be going so well. The sticking point could be years wanted by both sides for the chance to pitch for the Twins.
