  1. Do you think Oakland regrets giving up a ton for Hammels and Lester? Going for a win is not trading for Hellickson. Going for a win is trading for a top of the rotation starter. To get a top starter as a rental it would likely cost the best minor league starter, the third best starter and a reliever with potential. Great to trade if you have an excess of prospects. Not so good when you do not have much of a pitching staff to begin with and are looking at a crater of needs for starting pitching within 2 years and no prospects to fill it.
  2. Gibson is the equivalent of anybody with an arm. Rather than Gibson's name it would be someone else the people would be complaining about. To get someone of quality they would have to give something up. That would have the added advantage of giving people another player to write endless posts about giving up on a player
  3. Gimmenez this season had caught 13 games. The sample size of statistics that is large enough is directly proportional to the necessity of those numbers to prove the author's point versus what it takes when you disagree with the author's point. Gimmenez is not the catcher Castro is. That should be evident by salary. If the results were as dramatically bad as some would say over his career, Gimmenez's salary would likely be whatever the Saint's pay a catcher.
  4. Economics. If they do not sign they have no leverage next year. Slot values. 1. Twins: $7,770,700 2. Reds: $7,193,200 3. Padres: $6,668,100 4. Rays: $6,153,600 5. Braves: $5,707,300 6. A's: $5,303,000 The money drops quickly. There is no need for the top three clubs to sign someone for full slot value. Appel signed for 1.5 million underslot . Swanson went 2 million underslot. Moniak was almost 3 million under. Aiken did not sign and lost a lot of money http://m.mlb.com/news/article/183906680/2016-draft-signing-and-bonus-tracker/ http://m.mlb.com/news/article/130246508/2015-draft-signing-and-bonus-tracker/ http://m.mlb.com/news/article/79082538/2014-draft-signingbonus-tracker/ Top picks generally do not get full slot value
  5. Belisle has 2 bad outings in blowout losses. Molitor continues to you him in leverage situations. I don't think he is going anywhere unless it is a trade. Haley would likely be the next candidate to go if they think a AAA arm is ready. Busenitz might be the next one up. Hildenberger might be viewed as the second coming of Slama. That is his deception works well in the minors but his offering will get killed in the majors
  6. Of all of the Ryan trades the only minor league he ever traded that amounted to anything was Scott Downs. Ryan brought in quite a few short term players at no cost. A couple players with major league service time were gone for little return.
  7. Is Dougie Baseball performing a miracle with the Miracle? Some of the chatter here was the team was going to be bad,
  8. Matt Bush or Justin Verlander? Justin Upton or Ryan Zimmerman Hochevar or Kershaw? Moustkas or Price Beckham or anybody Mark Appel or Kris Bryant. Harper or Machado is win/win Curse of being number 1 Despite the last few years a Mauer over a Pryor.
  9. Revenue from television determines small market teams. By that metric the Twins are near the bottom and will likely always will be. Money talks. It is not an excuse but the reality.
  10. Gibson yet again going down.
  11. With any of these players the skill is seeing what tools they do have. Athleticism is the easy one to spot. Projecting batting skills is hard. Bat and athleticism kind of determines the round. The luck comes in the player developing the talents. The luck for a team then is how long before the league figures out how to neutralize that talent. See Allen Craig, one of those gems Birdwatchers was talking about. 3 seasons of mid 2 fWAR followed by falling off the face of the earth. So the second piece of luck a team needs is knowing when to move on a player while they still have value. Give them finding one good player every 10 years as most teams seem to do,F That would be your 20 career WAR player. For the rest then on average you are then finding players who are good for a year or two replacement level the rest. The other is the relief pitchers. I think pitcher fall in the draft whit some ratio of speed to control. Baxendale had control but mediocre speed. Fell to 10. Corty has a plus speed fastball and likely negative control, thus falling to round 40. Do the math and you will find that some teams might be a little better then others at finding mediocre talent.
  12. Kyle freeland was listed on the updated BA prospect list at 76. He has pitched at the mlb level all this year for the Rockies amassing 1.6 bwar, 0.9 fwar ,good for 26th best mlb pitcher and as of this moments listing, more than all but 55 position players. Not how WAR is meant to be used but is he really that low of a prospect? If not then why is Gonsalves, a similar pitcher in velocity and repertoire by what I read, not ranked in the updated numbers. Rankings are but a snapshot of the moment. Similar players will be ranked differently by their of competition. Every player in Cedar Rapids and extended spring training could al be under 20 years old and have a great potential. That likely will not show up on top 100 lists, but does show up http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/katohs-farm-system-rankings/ Sorry I do not know how to do the here thing. To whoever might be irritated that this was already posted, I wasn't goin back to look, sorry
  13. Wainwright was a starter throughout his minor league career. The head scratcher is Wainwright was the same age and experience as Anthony Reyes yet Reyes was the starter and Adam was the reliever.
  14. He appears to be unintrested as an Angel this year. Why would anyone want uninterested players on a roster? Yes, he was the second best pitcher on the Twins last year. That would be like finishing second in a King Ugly contest. Nolasco, despite a great 1/3 season in California, was still well below league average as a starting pitcher.
  15. That Nolasco had a career 1/3 of a season last year for the Angels should have no bearing on if the trade was good or not. That Nolasco is in a contract year and is pitching to league average is an indication of where he is at. The Twins traded a player that under performed for them in Nolasco for a player that could perform better than what Nolasco was giving them. Meyer for the Twins was a riddle wrapped in an enigma covered in medipore tape that they could not solve. They did the guy a favor. They got a player back. The winner of the trade? The Twins subtracted Nolasco, Meyer got a fresh set of coaches. The short term winner at this point by bwar is the Angels. The winner for this year's production is the Twins. By 2019 the net effect is likely insignificant for both teams. Nolasco and Santiago will move on, Meyer will still tease potential and Busenitz might be a 5th inning pitcher.
  16. The state of pitching is such that Tommy Milone is starting games for the Mets, Pelrfey for the White Sox, Relief pitching, Duensing is still on a roster, Matt Capps is finally not on a roster.
  17. You can laugh at the comparison, but you cannot deny that Hicks hits high pitches and not low ones. It is only a matter of time.
  18. I wonder when the teams will start to figure out to keep the ball low in the zone to Hicks http://www.fangraphs.com/zonegrid.aspx?playerid=5297&position=OF&ss=2017-01-01&se=2017-12-01&type=5&hand=all&count=all&blur=1&grid=10&view=bat&pitch=&season=2017 Danny Santana had a monster season off infield and bunt hits. Sometimes it takes teams a while to figure out the other teams hitters. When the sample size gets large enough they will trust the numbers.
  19. As long as this forum has existed it has been filled with complaints. It is not anything new.
  20. http://twinsdaily.com/_/minnesota-twins-news/minnesota-twins-minor-leagues/get-to-know-of2b-aaron-whitefield-r4348
  21. Did you miss the multiple posts on Mauer, Hughes, Grossman, almost everybody in the bullpen, and Santiago? I guess Castro or Gimmenez
  22. 74 days of service time last year. 172 is the number needed for a year About June 27
