  1. Morales was their best bat last year. What can his production be replaced with? 11 million, 1.5 buyout. Unless the number crunchers figure that somebody good will fall through the cracks, he probably stays.
  2. Pitching for a bad team does not help determine if a relief pitcher can hold a lead. For a career on poor teams Kintler has not blown leads at a rate any worse than the better relief pitchers do in terms of blown saves to holds and saves. It is not pretty, he is not lights out, but effective. Ryan O"Rourke has pitched in 54 games in the majors. He has neither a save, hol, or a win. Low leverage pitching . I don't think he or Boshers would get claimed. If they did, there would likely be some else similar available.
  3. I don't think the plan is much different from organization to organization. The quality of the judgements made is what sets them apart. Kluber and Salazar were not highly thought of prospects. Carasco was dropping out of the top 50. The results are evident.
  4. Given the statements on control maybe Allen was giving the pushback on Meyer not starting.
  5. There are a few people here on earlier threads bringing up Fien as why the Twins coaching is horrible, I like to remind them of less bad is still bad. I thought for sure the list would reappear on this thread. Adding JR was merely trying to show the sarcastic nature of the bit.
  6. A new stadium with a winning team was bound to be a success in Minneapolis. That the attendance stayed high like it has is a testament to the attraction still of the stadium. It only took one year of bad baseball before there was a drop of a million from the peak attendance in the 90's. The team in 2017 will draw as well as their record. Start winning, they will start drawing.
  7. Mauer does not play well when less than 100%. He needs to plunk down some money for a trainer in the off season. All of the endless stats being posted point to the lingering leg out of spring and the quad in the late season when he continued to play wiped out the decent middle part of the season.
  8. Jr Graham is pitching much better in the Yankees organization, Fien pitched better in LA. Regression under Eddie, not much for improvement. Even from bad to mediocre.
  9. Dueling SSS. The statistics would bear out that Ploufe nor Mauer play very well nicked up The new management needs to keep that kind of player on the dl as it only hurts the team. The selling of any player requires someone to want them. At their age, for Dozier or Santana to be moved it would be likely to a team that thinks one of them will make them a contender. In a weak FA market Santana does have value. If Santana can be viewed as he can be the third starter in a playoff rotation he will net more than a team looking for innings being eaten. A trade should net you a better long term player than an accepted QO next year.
  10. The bullpen was just outstanding under Eddie. The young relievers developed. Crafty veterans got even craftier.
  11. Walker is on the 40 man
  12. That is an impressive list of pitchers. Other than Tanaka (rehab assignment or spring training situation) there really isn't much on your list in terms of talent . A lot of players the Twins parted ways with.
  13. Generally with coaches they are let go ASAP as a favor to them to get in line for another job. It would not be a shock to have turnover in the staff. There would be coaches more in line with Ryan's thinking. Falvey might have different ideas. Training for the pitchers would be the biggest difference. He also may have different ideas on hitting. Hence changes in pitching and hitting coaches.
  14. Can't take Faedo. There is a Lenny flashback
  15. Given the dearth of pitching and the relatively inexpensive costs of the option it would be highly unlikely any of the options would not be picked up. That leaves Nova and Hellickson. Good pitchers, but hardly staff leaders.
  16. It is hard to believe the Molasco statement given the Twins' history of sinkerball pitchers. If Nolasco had a decent sinker , by history the Twins would have exploited it. If there was a change in pitching style for Molasco, teams will catch up and he will return to baseline.
  17. Fresh cherries are such a treat. In honor of the nation's capitol's cherry tree for first basemen combinations I pick Ryan Zimmerman and Clinton Robinson. In honor of Mount Rainier cherries, I pick Vogelbach Lee and Lind. In adding to the cherries, there is a pile of aged ones in Philadelphia in Ryan Howard. Cherry pick your players. Cherry pick the one number you want to use. Besides by woba, wrc+ Kennys Vargas is a better player that anyone else you listed. When I slip my rose colored glasses on I can say he will do it for over the course of a year next year and be better with consistent playing time. The Twins have the better player if you would only believe.
  18. What is the average cost of WAR, somewhere around 6 million. To add 10 WAR is then adding 60 million to the payroll. One would hope that a team with a 150 million payroll would be competitive. The Angels say otherwise. Yankees, Tigers say you can buy mediocrity. At 140 million spent, the Royals and White Sox are not getting their monies worth. SportRac data for payroll was used.
  19. It pays to have high draft picks It pays to have players other teams want to overpay for when going for it If you are going to be bad, be really bad. Be in a market where they turn out when the team loses.
  20. Outside of Nova or Hellickson there is no one on that list that would appear to be healthy enough to be a competent starter for a whole season. Perhaps you could shed some light on what pitcher would fill that role? Hector Santiago when the Twins non tender him?
  21. So winning a World Series gives MacPhail a free pass on the fact he left the team in terrible shape by 1994 when he left? MacPhail was lucky in that he walked into a situation where there was a great core of undeveloped talent. The subsequent teams he has taken over have won how many World Series? Cubs even come close? Can't blame the cheapskate owner there. You can't say there was a winning tradition with the Cubs. You can't say they did not try. How about Baltimore? He changed them from mediocre to contending after he left.
  22. Consider that a sinkerball pitcher tends to pitch to contact, and there is still rumblings about the Twins liking that style of pitching I find it a little hard to believe.
  23. Who would pitch as most of the bullpen and half the starters really have no long term future?
  24. I don't think Ramos was viewed as near Posey as a catcher, I don't think he was going to get Posy money (20m a year) Ramos may have already been viewed as injury prone. That view would limit his market. This injury does not help that view. The caveat is, all t takes is one team. As competition for that one team, there is also Wieters. Number crunching for 30+ year old catchers with injuries would lead one to believe it might a very high risk move. Not as many teams might go that route. Accepting a QO might not be the best option, either.
  25. Owner sets the budget for the team expenses, player payroll and operation expenses. Complete control is a myth.
