  1. Santiago and Gibson could be cut with only 1/4 of their contract paid until about the last week of March. Why are they set in stone, along with Hughes who is already a sunk cost. You may have to spend money now to save money later when you have to make decisions without knowing if the young pitchers are going to make it or not.
  2. My problem is where are we going? If you wait another year to jetison the veteran pitchers, by that time the core will be in place without knowing what pitchers can contribute and which will fail. That is what I feel needs to be determined this year, so by the end of 2018 we will know how many or if we need to dip into that great FA pitching pool and fix what holes we have. We will not be able to do this if we do not give the youngsters 2 years to sort themselves out. I would not be opposed to a starting rotation of Santana, Berrios, May, Gonsalves and Romero. At least in 2 years we will know where we stand.
  3. Agree the Twins need to take a step forward this year, this pitching staff frightens me. Fly ball pitchers will be fine as Twins outfield (minus Grossman) should be able to be well above average. However Gibson and other groundball pitchers could be a disaster unless you replace Polanco with a glove first SS. Otherwise left side of infield could be a sieve with Gibson or other of his types on the mound.
  4. It would mean the pitching staff of veterans to start turns into a dumpster fire and the younger pitchers are rushed to fill the gap, or they just let the season play out. I could see an ERA of about 5.5 in the worst case scenario.
  5. It is early yet. Will take more note after first cuts are made(I presume sometime this week). One note is that it only costs like 25% of salary to cut an arbitration player. So do not think money will be an issue if the FO does not feel like either Santiago or Gibson is working out before the last week of spring training. Park is getting early looks, so it is possible he plays his way back on the roster, Vargas is optioned and one of many edge 40 man roster players is sent packing. Goodrum is also a dark horse for me and would like to see him get some early game reps against major league pitching to form an opinion.
  6. Too early to worry about Sano. Encouraged that May looked good, still too early but a good sign.
  7. I would say it is time to worry if Hughes velocity does not improve in 2 weeks. Before that I am inclined to believe Hughes has that time to ramp up. If he cannot get regularly above 90, the time has come to cut bait.
  8. Pressly is the only non space filler I see in that group. Would not mind if they sent Gibson packing, but the youngsters will have to step up into the rotation for that to happen.
  9. I would take the under, too big a chance the starting pitching sucks again this year. Have little faith in the current expected starting staff and expect most to be traded or replaced during the year. Not a good way to find the over.
  10. Dates are important here, but it looks like he is the real deal.
  11. the author feels Robert is a superstar in the making. I
  12. According to some scouts according to The Score, Luis Robert from Cuba is supposed to be the 'Best Player on the Plant'. He is planning to become available before July 2 where multiple clubs, including those who will be barred for signing players for more the $300,000 could bid on him. Multiple teams have been linked to him, http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/scout-cuban-prospect-robert-best-player-on-the-planet/ar-AAnkXkm?li=AAn4eAA&ocid=spartandhp Would it be worthwhile for the Twins to go after him? The Twins have been linked to, and expected to sign one of the two(Rays are going to sign the other). Wander Franco and Jelfrey Marte. This comes from mlbtraderumors yesterday, attributed to Baseball America. The signing would cost the Twins the shortstop, and will have some limitations down the road. Twins already have a shortstop considered to be very good in the system(Wander Javier), but Robert is a 1B player and almost certainly be ready when Mauer leaves after 2018(if not sooner). Twins also have a glut(very unusual)of middle infield talent, with only one(Diaz) 1B talent coming in the next few years. Twins need pitching help more, so losing the ability to sign front line international players for two years could be harmful, but if Robert is going to be a superstar, would it be worthwhile?
  13. Jax is a high level talent that is devalued due to his Air Force commitment. I think that plays out this summer and we see what his availability is. Outerwise he was a much higher talent than where the Twins drafted him. Rest of list was nitpicky, but nothing really stands out as bad or overreach, with the Twin graduations most of hitting talent is now at very low levels. Most of upper level pitching talent needs to take a step forward if Twins are to compete in 2018 or 2019. Other choice is Twins will have a buy at least 1 or 2 upper level pitchers. We can afford it, but is not the normal Twins way.
  14. Usually the GM decides who is on the club and lets the manager decide when they play. In the consultation if the manager is not going to use the player, then they jointly decide what to do. This is why I was more for firing Molitor than relieving TR. Maybe and I think the time had come(now) to make the change at the top, I just thought that Molitor was more of the problem than TR.
  15. Against LHP you are going to rest either Kepler or Rosario, so I would expect Grossman to start against ever LHP, if he makes the club and I think he will.
  16. My less than a lock include both Hughes and Gibson. I also feel Murphy will be the backup catcher. This is close Seth. More pitching competition cannot hurt, a lot of it is guesses at this time.
  17. They have to play him at shortstop or trade him or Dozier, it makes little sense to have a part time player of his caliber sitting on the bench 2-3 days a week.
  18. Hard to say how this plays out, my guess in not well, as either you have to trade Dozier or have to package Polanco with another asset to get a somewhat decent return.
  19. They have these for college players, not so much for high school. They are the summer leagues. The one in Minnesota/Wisconsin, Iowa, and Thunder Bay has rules and stipends, but only help for college players and I assume are fairly well scouted.
  20. Think you give him about half a year, if things to not progress, put him back in the pen and pencil him in as a co-closer. Super bullpen can cover a lot of starting pitching issues.
  21. Unless one of the college pitchers really step forward,. still want Greene for his best pure stuff. At worst he is a closer with that fastball, at best an ace.
  22. You cannot pay these players until they turn pro, amateur rules. It is a good thought if their was a way to set up an amateur tournament to showcase these players.
  23. If I can make it will be there somewhere around the 9th. May just go to a game up here in Clearwater during 1 of the 3 Twins trips up here.
  24. I do not see the love affair with Gibson. I see starting rotation as Santiago and Santana and the rest have to prove it. Gibson needs a great infield defense, Twins do not have it. Maybe they can get better from him, but I would make him prove it. Great candidate to trade when someone else plans go do with injury or plane bad pitching. If these pitchers do not have to earn jobs we are back where we where last year. Believe May with be a starter with the Twins, he needs a steady routine with his back issues.
