  1. Lots of angst here, not without reason. All of us are disappointed by the news, but I am willing to give the new FO the benefit of the doubt on this move. Rogers and Breslow are not shutdown relievers so I would expect that Jay if he preforms will be here midseason with this move. Kansas City model may have to be the one used by the Twins to get to the next level. We have the shutdown relievers coming faster than the starters. Falvey had a great bullpen in Cleveland, maybe that is what he sees as the path here. This is a new regime, you can blame the old one, but it is water over the dam. Give it a chance. I am far more concerned with the starting staff this year and that direction than other things.
  2. Wish you had individual tickets. The only one I see that I could attend is the first, rest I am on the road. Though maybe not the third.
  3. Hope Jay is up soon, and expect he will be. This could be the start of a power bullpen(like Cleveland only maybe better/deeper). Royals won with this combination, Twins might be much better with it also. It only subtracts one pitcher from the starter pool, and the Twins have several in that pool now, along with the bullpen.
  4. No surprises here. Seth where were the optioned players sent? Some of them made good impressions(Goodrum) for one, so hopefully we will see him later this year. Also might see Gordon if he does well and Dozier is traded.
  5. Let me see, Twins have Mejia, Berrios, Gonsalves, Jay, Steward, Romero, Thorpe, Jorge, Ynoa, and more in the pipeline. Along with this years #1 draft pick, if a college starter will probably start in AA and also be in the pipeline, if Greene he will be 4-5 years out. That is 8+ pitchers, what gremlins are you afraid up. This has to be next man up. If all fail we will be back to square 1, but the would be an indictment of the Twins scouting staff. (and there pitching coaches). Problem here is Molitor and his job status. He has already won 1 front office showdown, and I do not blame Falvey and Levine to tread lightly, since he has a direct line to Pohlad's ear. I believe we should start with Mejia and see who survives the year. I actually would start with more rookies if you could get proper trade value for Twins starters. Change the guard, go back to the McPhail ways of next man up. End the scholarships and players being here because they are veterans. Sure the pain will me more this year, but the goal time will be much shorter than this half measures and not making evauations for the long haul.
  6. After this season you start locking up the core you can to long term contracts. This gives you cost control and certainty of payroll so you can see what you can afford in the FA pitcher market. You need an ace or a shutdown 4-5 inning bullpen to help make a run for the series. Then you figure out how many pitchers you need to buy and go after them. With the Twins young core, I do not believe it will be impossible to get them to come here.
  7. We just have to expect this, not what I would do, but understandable. Twins will make changes this year and the leash will be much shorter as the backups are a lot closer. Still just have Hughes penciled in until I am sure he can maintain his velocity(92 mph) thru the middle innings. Will see how this plays out, but would be upset if Vogelsong is the 5th starter.
  8. That is why I have advocated finding out what the youngsters have. From the list I like Cobb. I feel Darvish will cost too much, and too much downside in the backend of the contract. Top end will cost too much so think Twins will take a pass. Twins staff should improve going forward, so thinking it will fall on its face in an error, unless the staff that starts this year in the majors does.
  9. Looks very close. Might swap out Chris Gimenez for Murphy. Only other flaw I see is Molitor likes DanSan so he might make it, but still hoping for DFA. Haley might fail in the next 2 weeks, which would give a bullpen spot to Vogelsong or one of the lefties with Rogers moving into the long relief role. This was close.
  10. If Mejia continues to pitch well, I could see a number of us bringing pitchforks if Vogelsong is named the 5th starter. Use him as a backup in AAA. If he does not want that let him go, doubt there will be much in the way of takers. Get ready for the kids this summer, but don't bury us early by having horrible starters in the majors.
  11. Do not thnk Vogelsong should make this club. Chargois will also be here. There still could be trades, there are several clubs looking for starting pitching. At the end of 2017 you have 4 top pitchrers in FA, find out what the youngsters have now! Would prefer if there is no opt out date early that Vogelsong should start in AAA and Mejia or Berrios should be in the rotation.
  12. He will probably begin in Rochester. Twins do not need another defensive outfielder. If Grossman should falter or one of the starters has bad beginning, he will be up.
  13. Nick is correct. If Breslow continues to do the job, he will win the spot. My guess is Twins try and trade one of Boshers and O'Rourke. Rogers will probably get one spot, because he can go more innings at one time. Still early and would revisit in a couple of weeks
  14. If this the rotation, there is a good chance of a fire sale in May.
  15. I hope not, We have better pitchers than some of these.
  16. Seth, nice report, when will the first cuts come from the major league camp, so we start getting an idea of what the 4 full season rosters will look like. Also where will Hildenberger, Reed, and Burdi start this year.
  17. Gonsalves should be at AAA, Romero,Jay,Thorpe,Stewart may well be in AA. The pipeline is there, some may not be ready until midseacon, but we need to find what we have. Duffey also may be in consideration and you have Vogelsong and Tempesh as depth options(that you hope you will not have to use). Now is the time, why stretch it out.
  18. I am trying to be a realist. Twins starting pitching needs to be revamped. If you think this starting rotation or any part of it other than Santana will produce a playoff victory, I will wonder want you are drinking. Not evaluating our prospects will just push the timeline out further. Let's move toward the goal of competing. Not doing this in small mistimed increments.
  19. By the numbers 1. Will Gibson be here in 2019 (Unlikely) 2. Number of starters Twins have that are 2019 rotation starters(8). 3. Number of the 8 starters Twins have evaluated(0) 4. Number of these starters that will succeed in the major leagues(2-3) 5. Number of #1 and #2 starters likely to be available after 2017 - 2018 seasons(5+) 6. Number of current Twin starters need to be here after 2018. 1 - 2. Yes, I would move any Twins starter to teams that have injury needs and are offering fair value in return. Twins need to me ready to contend by 2019. Not doing proper evaluations will only slow the process.
  20. Would guess Mejia wins the spot. Think the FO has things it wants Berrios to work on in AAA. Wonder if the weakness started last year with Trevor's back issues. Bad news, but still would like to follow the course, with the Rockies and Rangers both having rotations issues, would be a good time to make a good deal. Gibson looks like a fit for either of those clubs. You might get something of value.
  21. Wish Trevor the best, and hope he does the TJ surgery right away, so he can be back sometime next year. This is why no never have enough pitching.
  22. Still feel there is the double secret order out to give Molitor everything he needs to succeed this year. That does not include the probationary pitchers. We will probably see Vogelsong and Tempish before we see Berrios. This is along with Mejia, Wheeler and a few others. And yes until proven otherwise I am cynical at this time.
  23. Still mystified by this approach. You have a minimum of 8 starting pitchers, almost all of whom will be at AA or higher at the start of this year. Over the next 2 years, you have more than 50% of the ace pitchers able to hit FA. You have a young roster that will have a chance to win it all(hopefully) in the next few years. Maybe the newer pitchers are not ready, but you cannot evaluate them between the difference of an AAAA pitcher and a good major league starter without giving these pitchers the chance. Santiago without a good year, will not be here next year(and if he has a good year and the Twins are not in it, he will bring back decent assets). Gibson, I still feel we have better pitchers in the pipeline. Hughes needs to regain his velocity, as his fastball is suspect. I am not saying to just cut some of these pitchers, there have been several pitchers go down and will not be ready for the start of the season(Texas is a prime example). See if you can get a lottery ticket plus for one of our starters. As far a letting Falvey and Levine evaluate this year, I am sure in their prior positions they had access to how their people felt about the Twins pitchers. They will not need to fully evaluate, because they already have the background to do this. Last issue is Molitor. I have to believe that their is a mandate from Pohlad to construct a club to give him a chance. That is a problem, because it slows or stops the process. I can only hope if this is the case and the Twins get off to a bad start, that he is fired and the Twins move to the total overhaul of their pitching staff.
  24. Do not think Slegers will be here, but Burdi might or another reliever, Glad you send Gibson packing.
  25. Nice article Seth. As I see it only Michael(very slim chance) and Rodriquez have a chance to make it to the bigs. Wheeler and Hurlbut are now buried as filler behind about 8-10 other starting pitchers. Harrison would have to have a monster year to get back to prospect status. Michael has Goodrum, Escobar, Santana and the new guy(do not remember name) to surpass to get equal to this year. It will be difficult, but do not see Santana as being in a Twins uniform at the end of spring training. Rodriquez has a lot of relievers to pass, but that is a volatile group. He will probably get a look see if he continues to develop.
