  1. At some point, it just doesn't matter. 50% of a contending team is 50%. That's never enough for a winner. The pipeline didn't materialize. The prospects have mostly been a bust. Correa's contract eats up any chance of taking on new free agents. No, it's not happening here, sorry. There's no other reasonable conclusion. Though I appreciate the hope some folks still have.
  2. It might be helpful at some point to realize that this is not a playoff-caliber team ... and not even a particularly good team. Spotty rotation. Terrible offense. Weak defense. No, it's not happening.
  3. I just don't think the comparison here is appropriate. Pressly was a crucial component to an already-strong and athletic Astros team - a team that was ready for championship run, from the minors to the front office. That's not the Twins. The Astros built their dominance on years of high draft picks and a complete organizational overhaul. That's the route we should be taking, not holding on to relievers who may - or may not - remain healthy on a sub-.500 team in 2026.
  4. My two thoughts on Correa: 1) When teams with better track records in player evaluation refuse to sign a free agent after a physical, probably smart to take a pass. 2) Or, it's possible that he's still a high-adrenaline big-game hunter surrounded by players/coaches with zero killer instinct. It's maybe draining on him. It shouldn't be, but it might be.
  5. It was the rough start that made the margins thin very early. That rough June would have still left the Twins in position for a WC run if they had come out strong in April. Or even competent.
  6. Just so we're clear, I think everyone who loves the Twins prefers winning. I think many of us realize that winning it all just isn't possible with this current group.
  7. Baseball's not just a game of numbers, but it's also a game of emotion. I still think that, after last season's epic stretch-run collapse, the players looking in the dugout and seeing the same manager and hearing the same losing messages had an impact. And sure enough, they picked up right where they left off and fell flat on their faces. This season was lost in April. But I agree that ownership torpedoed fan excitement and good will after 2023's meek but encouraging playoff run. That seems to be the core failure that has stretched its way across two seasons.
  8. I get what you're saying, but no. We've played that song already, multiple times. the Twins aren't just a player away, and even if they were, their prospects typically just fizzle at the big league level. It's time to clean house.
  9. There isn't a viable fanbase left. It's time for a complete overhaul and a championship run later on. Ryan's stock will never be higher, and he can do nothing to help 2026 that he hasn't already done this year.
  10. You have to take that chance. This team isn't capable of taking things to the next level. It's time to build a roster that can.
  11. I'm old enough to remember Munoz, and as a kid it seemed like he picked a bat that was way too big for him.
  12. I think you got it right in the title: the season is already killed, not being killed. The Rockies losses sort of sealed the fate of this club for 2025. It's hard not to wonder what this roster would look like under a different manager. But it's also possible that this is just a team clearly past its contention window, with too many players who just aren't reliable contributors.
  13. I'm confused by all of the "don't touch Joe Ryan" talk. What exactly is Joe Ryan going to do for a rebuilding team? His stock is probably never going to be higher. The Twins are going nowhere in 2026. Aren't you supposed to sell high and buy low if you're a mid-market team? Let the poor guy pitch for a contender. Judging from his comments last week, it sounds like he wouldn't mind being traded one bit. And I don't blame him.
  14. I hope Buxton can offer him a little guidance. It's going to be a transition year. Royce will either have a resurgence at some point in the coming years, or he could leave the game early and then be a great manager with a renewed love of the game from the dugout. I feel for him. Good guy. Incredible talent. Rotten luck.
  15. Agreed. 3/5 of the rotation (Paddack, Ober and the rotating #5 starter) are massive question marks, and that's not even including Lopez, who won't be back for weeks. The offense just isn't good enough to win many games on its own. Sell.
  16. After a few drinks that ERA is going to look a lot more attractive.
  17. You're not wrong, but it's fun to think that's he's putting it all together at the right time. Better to have a prospect peak just before a call-up than never at all. I like an old-school slugger, and I have a little bit of fool's hope for Sabato.
  18. Neat. I also saw then have the worst start in franchise history, coupled with a truly dreadful June. This team is missing a few key ingredients. They don't have it on the farm, they won't trade for it and they won't pay for it in the offseason. They're a sub-.500 team, even with that lovely 13 game win streak. It's probably time to look ahead to a better future. I'd much rather see them win now, but I've seen enough recent autumn collapses to sober me up.
  19. I'm confused. Was cutting (not adding, mind you) payroll after 2023 a defendable position, right after the first taste of playoff success in a generation? No, it wasn't. And it clearly had an impact on that following season. It's fine to defend ownership, and no one here on TD expects the Twins to spend Mets money. But there's no question in my mind that some additional support in 2024 would have made a difference, and some additional payroll flexibility with regard to trades this year could also make a difference. But this organization has no killer instinct, and ownership would much rather bail out and take the money than hoist a trophy. I don't see how that's remotely debatable at this point.
  20. That's not negative. Pessimistic maybe, but that's an understandable response to MN sports in general. The fact is that they're still not a .500 team. They have zero chance to win the division and an awful lot of competition ahead of them for a WC spot. All things considered, selling is the reasonable choice. It's sad, though, because with even a decent ownership group, a modest payroll push last year likely would have led to a playoff berth, and a willingness to add some salary through trades could maybe lead to one this year. But as Bonnes and Gleeman noted recently, penny wise and pound foolish is the Twins' organizational slogan.
  21. I'm not a big fan of the front office, but I concede that they have a very difficult choice ahead. I really, really would like an organizational rebuild. I want to see this organization change and become more aggressive, athletic and fundamentally sound. BUT ... I want this team to WIN and to electrify the state in September and October. I'm 90% sure that's not possible this year with this squad, but that 10% chance almost seems worth it. Almost.
  22. Is Sabato still a possibility? I still have a little hope he might make an MLB debut this year.
  23. In the running for Stu's post of the year. We'll see what the second half brings.
