  1. The metric he used for measuring trades, WARP accrued only while the player(s) played for the respective team(s), makes a one-year stay by a player look worse than it is. Clearly the value gotten in return for Hardy was bad, by any conceivable metric, but the trade that brought Hardy here in the first place was far more balanced than this writer prefers to make it look. I stopped caring about the article at that point; just a hatchet job. Smith needed to go, and the Nishioka deal and the second Hardy trade were IMO the triggers, not because of the results but because of the process that we later learned about. This article didn't go into any of that.
  2. Because it's an interesting subject to consider.
  3. When there are areas that need improvement, it’s my job to ask questions, suggest ideas and give direction to the field staff. When our upper management has questions or suggestions, it’s my job to respond to them. I don’t believe meddling is a fair portrayal. IOW, Wedge's account was accurate.
  4. Probably a little late to snare Beltran, but let's keep dreaming big!
  5. This may explain the recent re-signing of Gardy after 3 bad seasons, to avoid the airing of dirty laundry. I keed, I keed.
  6. I couldn't find any mention of such an issue with Pinto. Might it have been a confusion with Sano having been shut down during his winter league?
  7. By adding free agents now, we pay a salary that no other team was willing to top. At some later time that can change, to the extent that another team is now willing to expend further resources (in trade) to acquire that contract, but free agents aren't quite the fungible trading chips we sometimes make them out to be. It's one of the things that annoy me (even while I exploit it) when playing sim games like Out Of The Park, when I sign an unneeded FA and immediately trade him for some tasty prospects.
  8. So... how long does the DFA process take? Is Hendriks by now cleared of waivers? Or, was the announcement that he'd been DFA'ed a signal that he had already cleared?
  9. Down there, to your left, next to "Blog this Post".
  10. Add the Mariners to that list, I reckon.
  11. Years ago, the White Sox invoked a "diminished skills" clause in Frank Thomas's contract, a move that didn't bring happiness to either party. I wonder if that kind of clause is rare, or common? Doumit's contract extension was based in large part on his ability and willingness to catch. I'm sure Terry Ryan doesn't want this to go to litigation, but if the reasonable choice becomes to cut ties and no trade can be worked out, this has the potential of becoming messy. I hope, as was already stated, this is just a rumor gone wild.
  12. Moderator's note: Folks, we went from the Hughes signing to the possibly interesting tidbit that Hughes and Ryan did not talk, to a speculative question whether that reflected poorly on Ryan, to a further digression onto where negative reflection might correctly belong. Please, unless it bears on the Hughes signing, don't wander that far off in this thread - contribute to a different thread or start one of your own. This has already turned into needless bickering.
  13. Clicking Like wasn't enough. Likelikelike.
  14. But less flippantly, Ryan has kind of a narrow line to tread. Most of the season ticket base, and the fanbase in general, can't be sold on xFIP or park factors that easily. He wants to proudly announce the acquisition of a solid youngish pitcher, but that pitcher racked up an unsightly 4-14 record with a 5+ ERA this year. I think that accounts for what we were seeing from him today.
  15. That WAS Terry Ryan celebrating. He just forgets to tell his face, whose default mode is Extreme Earnestness.
  16. Yes. When it's like that I usually check Yahoo News or some other big site to see whether it's a problem with my connection, but it's usually just TD being slow to respond.
  17. I'll say it: tall guys didn't exist. Never did. Never will. That was fun.
  18. I have my Adobe Flash turned off in Firefox, and I still frequently get "waiting for twinsdaily.com..." for half a minute at a time. Then at other times (such as now) it's fast enough to suit me. A few weeks ago I might have thought we were getting the overflow crowd from healthcare.gov, but that shouldn't be a problem now...
  19. That can't be right; must be an artifact of how the spreadsheet was set up, dividing $1M by 4 for some reason. Everything else I've read has it as a $1M buyout for the fifth year.
  20. That Gardy will be your actual boss (with Rick Anderson as the project leader), and his boss isn't who you'll interact with much ? That "major league baseball player" isn't a job you find via craigslist? That your job involves people skills to a much smaller degree than most?
  21. Fair enough; I debated even throwing that out there, it's not really more than a first impression, and I can't pretend I know what goes on between his ears.
  22. The short clip I saw so far doesn't look like a man who feels confident - sighing and groping for words. I think the coaching staff has some work cut out for them starting in February.
  23. Sounds more like a difference between major leaguer versus career minor leaguer, than starter versus reliever.
  24. I misread my Pacific coast clock and thought it was already underway.
