  1. I don't know why more players don't use this strategy. The Gas-House Gorillas could have taken Bugs Bunny deep instead of striking out (on one pitch!), for example. BTW I thought the title said Nerdscouting.
  2. Almost all kids choose to believe that.
  3. Our oldest boy was probably 3 or 4 when he first became aware of "Cubby Pott".
  4. This is trivial, but having been away from Minnesota almost 20 years, what jumped out at me was when he said shouldn't. "Shoont." Emotional situation for a stoic Minnesotan, being let go from the Twins. He professes no hard feelings. But he measured his words, here and there.
  5. And if she finds out even that little.... BANNED.
  6. Now do one with Lombardozzi, Valdivielso, Mientkiewicz, and Pierzynski. Stelmaszek and Terwilliger too, while you're at it. Preferably one loaded with near-misses on spelling.
  7. OK, so you're saying they come out with about the same ERA over a season? If I have a bad team I take the up and down guy, because he'll help me get closer to .500 and also might bring in some fans. If I have a good team, the up and down guy might cost me a pennant.
  8. I don't know why more managers don't use this strategy.
  9. Here's what you do. Bring in your lights-out closer to pitch the 1st inning. (If on the road, you can use your nearly-lights-out setup man and then your closer for the first 2 innings.) If your offense has done any scoring, then it looks like it might be your day; bring in pitcher B. But if you're shut out in your first inning (or two), use Pitcher A on the theory that maybe you'll still eventually scratch out enough runs to win if he's on, and it won't matter if he's not. Plus! you may have him available for the 10th inning if it winds up 1-1.
  10. Or maybe it's just that all their pitchers are strong, all their fielders are good looking, and all their bats are above average.
  11. I can also see why someone would decide to keep the annoyance to himself and maybe some close friends who won't misinterpret.
  12. Coincidentally or not, the admins revamped a few things recently and this forum is now called Other Baseball. "Talk about all non-Minnesota Twins baseball here." With Twins baseball divided between major and minor league forums, hopefully it becomes a little clearer where a given topic can go. And if not, no worries. Or... if worries arise, we just move and merge as needed.
  13. I think you have adopted a clearer view of reality than the people whose view of reality is less clear than yours.
  14. I did not realize someone could get the yips while using Twitter.
  15. One started by JB_Iowa and another started by amjgt, a couple days apart, on the same topic.
  16. The injuries make him a long shot by now, but you gotta admire the stick-to-it-iveness.
  17. Moderator's note: I infer a sense of satire here, but let's be careful please.
  18. Moderator's note: I have moved and merged two similar threads into this one here. As you were, carry on, etc.
  19. It removes the incentive to bring in wave after wave of relievers. "Why should I bring someone else in? The fences are so close, it'll just be the same." / When I first moved to Nevada I went to a Reno Chukars independent league game. The score was something like 7-5 in the fifth inning, and both starters were still pitching despite having given up some homers. The above logic, thin air moreso than close fences, seemed to hold sway with both managers that evening.
  20. Welcome Penthang! Hope you keep contributing to the community here.
  21. Yeah, the Hit tool is probably the one indispensable tool for getting more than a cup of coffee in the majors. If the scouts aren't sold on his, that would be the explanation.
  22. Moderator's note: I infer a sense of satire with that last part, but let's be careful please.
  23. The Optimism gene?
  24. Good read, thanks for sharing. "That’s the challenge for families today. It’s not about the $100 bat. It’s about the $100-a-night motel room and the $30 gas money and the $300 tournament fee. There’s a huge financing gap to get a child to that next level where they might be seen. .... There’s a lot of talk about kids thinking that baseball is slow and boring, or that they’d rather sit at home and play video games. Maybe there’s some truth to that, but to me, there is a deeper problem going on that is affecting low-income kids of all races."
  25. I was with you, up to here. The opposite of one team's fans' hopes may be simply other teams' fans' apathy toward them. I don't know how much of the action is by the self-styled "smart money" of professional bettors who make their living that way (or so they tell their friends), but unless it's the lion's share you are betting against the hopes of fans in bigger cities, and the bookies are there to level out the action. I do think the odds are interesting, in that there is enough smart money involved that it's not just a popularity contest. "My town is red hot, your town ain't doodly squat."
