  1. Ummm, 16 in a row by my calculation (this is after the game but it certainly wasn't 25).
  2. I would hope their last 1-1 selection
  3. AL teams don't use a bench that often -- it's much more about being able to match up lefties and righties. I'm glad about Vargas coming up and all, don't get me wrong, just that it's not like anyone can say Molly is hamstrung by 13 pitchers -- there are other options.
  4. You don't even need to bring anyone up. Just use Sano/Grossman at 1B when lefties are playing. I get wanting to give Sano a solid spot at 3B but you're not asking him to do it a lot (once a week) and you're not asking him to do something he hasn't done before (like OF last year). And your 3B defense is better with Escobar there. If the Twins wanna drop a reliever, I'm fine with it. But they don't even have to bring someone up to solve this problem.
  5. I really like the concept of golf as a three man team game. Especially if two teams played at the same time and time was involved. You had your driver, your middle guy and your short guy. Driver in the box, middle guy halfway down the fairway and the putter close. The two drivers hit first and from there it's first a number of strokes thing but all ties are broken by who finished first. And you could have them have to switch roles every hole. This sport would be way better than actual golf.
  6. Yeah Gibson will get more time. And should. He's potential trade bait at the deadline if he has a nice year (not super optimistic but hopeful). Hughes is a guy I'd include on the list of guys who need to be worried. His weakened stuff may play better from the pen.
  7. Like there were four times I was like, "I need to go on and explain reality to this moron" and then I had to breath out and realize it was not worth it. I guess I'm maturing?
  8. This whole thing first pitch swinging thing has never made much sense to me. Baseball Reference indicates that Joe has swung at the first pitch on 19.2% of his at bats this year. Career he's at 10.2%. The MLB average is 27.5% during his career. So he's certainly below average but it isn't comically so. Joe isn't a free swinger, that's just not his game. There's value in taking pitches - we've see that first-hand this year as the Twins have been incredibly patient. Eddie Rosario has walked twice! In the same game! Perhaps Joe is rubbing off on others?
  9. The comments on Star Tribune were so dumb I almost signed up for an account. Almost.
  10. He also hits lefty. The ideal twins 4th OF can hit from the right side of the plate. I know we all hate Danny Santana here but he's a pretty decent 25th man. Very good OF defense, adequate IF defense and he can steal a base and pinch run well. Switch hitter too if you need him to hit. The problem is not having him on the roster, it's how he's used. He shouldn't be starting anything but the occasional game unless there are injuries - Grossman is bad in the OF but he should spell guys out there. Santana should be a late inning pinch runner in every close game and a defensive sub for Grossman when he plays.
  11. 1.) We're talking about having a DH not a utility infielder. No one is saying "get rid of Escobar", just that having Escobar DH is ridiculous. It's Jason Tyner 2.0. Escobar's career OPS = .682, Grossman's = .723. Grossman's OPS vs. righties (his weak side) = .696. Escobar vs. righties = .659. You might as well use Grossman (who is a solid platoon partner but not a full-time DH and not useful against righties) than replace him with Escobar. If the question was "DH Sano and Escobar plays 3B vs DH Grossman and Sano plays 3B" I'd get your point but if we're talking DHs (which we are), it's insane. 2.) Palka is an interesting option no one talks about. He hit righties and lefties pretty evenly in the minors in 2014 and 2016 (though not in 2015 to be fair) and is a much better bat at 1B than Gimenez on days Mauer sits. And when the Twins play righties (70% of starters) they'd be able to DH Palka instead of Grossman, who slots much better into a DH-vs-lefties/bench bat role. Palka is a viable option besides Vargas/Park. He doesn't solve the lefties dilemma but that's only 30% of pitchers. Let's solve the 70% problem.
  12. Also, I was at that game and it's hard to go too far saying how deflating that play was - a real momentum changer. The Twins were down 2-0 but the White Sox made a mistake and were going to lose a guy at third with nobody out. That's a huge play to help out a young pitcher. Mejia didn't make it out of that inning and while it's his job to bounce back, it's hard no to think about how much better he might have done without that deflating moment. I think we've seen the Twins seem to take energy from outfield defense - important to remember the opposite is true as well.
  13. Yeah, his range has been okay and he's looked relatively athletic. I just hope a coach or player who speaks Spanish was working with him on that play before the game Sunday. He's got to know that, especially as people seem to be dropping sac bunts more often. It also has to do with the situation. He acted like there was a runner on first two and you're trying to end that play early to limit that runner advancing instead of a situation where time is on your side - the runner's going to get tired and do something dumb, MLB defenders should win that 99/100. Throw it to Castro and let Escobar take over on the back end.
  14. Agreed. That said, the Sano rundown play was distressingly bad. Mostly because it was a little league play and speaks to not getting the basics of the game. You HAVE to run that play back to third base. And you have to get lumbering Sano out of the play and let guys like Polanco take over. I'd be upset if I saw that in a high school or legion ball game.
  15. well clearly no one can say they know with certainty. I certainly never did, I used many maybes and probablys. That said, I don't think it's crazy to say that the new FO is going to want to look at people but isn't necessarily going to be invested in every single guy in the organization - they didn't draft or sign many of them so it will easier to cut bait. I could see a Twins team that is relatively competitive near June move a reliever or two if Chargois, Wimmers etc. appear to be ready. They clearly aren't looking at a one-year window based on the comments they've made in public. A bullpen doesn't need to implode for there to be changes, any more than Grossman needs to suck to see Park or Vargas in the majors. Guys in the minors can force their way up and there are ways to move guys into lesser roles and out of the organization.
  16. Maybe, maybe not. This isn't TR's show anymore. There's a focus on developing pitchers for the long haul, not keeping vets around until you can't. I also think there are guys in the minors who can force moves. If Chargois or Wimmers is dominating, it isn't necessarily going to be that someone isn't doing their job. The new FO is going to be willing to trade and release guys they aren't married to. Just because they kept Tonkin now doesn't mean that they aren't looking at him for a few months and deciding, "We're comfortable designating him for assignment and seeing what happens." There's also the probability of injury. Or ineffectiveness by Hayley/Tonkin types that doesn't lose you games (they are in games you're way up or down in) but makes them expendable.
  17. Agreed. Last year the Royals went 46-30 against the AL Central and 35-51 outside the Central. That's a pretty hollow 81-81 finish. Not crazy to think that the Twins could do something similar since everyone but Cleveland is looking pretty flawed.
  18. Tons of reinforcements in the minors though - lots of arms to get excited about. Pen in August will be different than pen now.
  19. Like this a lot. That is one aspect of 2015 that isn't talked about - Duffey came up and provided a spark down the end run and replaced Pelfrey when he turned back into a pumpkin. That's one part of this year that I'm optimistic about - guys like Berrios and Gonsalves could provide the same injection during the season. Not to mention hitters like Park, Vargas, Granite and Palka. I don't think this team will make the playoffs but .500 is within reasonable reach.
  20. I'm not sure the Twins have problems at shortstop. They have Polanco not looking awful at the MLB level and Gordon and Vielma in the upper minors looking like they have a good shot at being at worst major league regulars and perhaps even more (in Gordon). And Jermaine Palacios is a promising guy who might be able to stick at short. You can never have too many athletes but I would never draft a guy because we need a shortstop. I don't think we particularly do and I'd rather draft the guy who will have the most impact at the MLB level, regardless of position. If that's a CF, then we get a CF.
  21. As should small samples in April. Moving him down was smart but let's not give up on him.
  22. Outside of Palka, Vargas and Lewin Diaz, there's not a solid left-handed first base/DH prospect. Assuming Mauer hits similar to what he does now, there may be room for him on a small deal. Strictly platooning at DH/1B with someone and Sano (Sano playing every day)
  23. The oppo is the best part of it. He's going to hit a lot of doubles this year. So excited for the 7th inning.
  24. I'd have liked to see Grossman get a day off, Sano move to DH and Polanco in at 3B/SS with Escobar. But I agree that it's because they try to get everyone some PT in the early going.
