Last offseason was filled with spending money on fringe RPs that never panned out. Adding DeSclavani & Margot's salaries were a waste of money plus Margot took up a valuable roster spot for the whole season & valuable MLB experience for Keirsey. If they had done nothing I would have given them a C because we still had a very good core, if they had filled a couple of minor holes via trades I'd have given them a B+. The idea of the offseason is to become better for the season & seasons to come. But since they spent money & we became worse not only that we did nothing to better ourselves for this season, then I gave them a F. This season I'd still give them a C if they do nothing. Like last offseason they have done a lot of busy stuff acquiring fringe catchers & 1Bmen that won't make an impact on the team this year. Cartaya could help us next year but not this year. If they trade Vazquez or Castro, I'd give them a D, if they trade both, I'd give them another F & expect another poor season because it'd be hard to replace them. If they have to cut salary & trade Paddack, I'd give them a C+ because Paddack is replaceable. If they don't trade Castro & Vazquez & trade for a high-leverage LHRP then I'd give them a B. If they trade for at least 1 promising young MLB-ready future starting catcher then I'd give them an A. There is a clear path to have a very successful offseason but that means to stop sitting around & waiting, get up & take that path

14th in OPS in the INT, League is pretty darn good for a true CFer. If he was DH, 1B or even RFer then we'd have something to worry about. Cave isn't & never was a decent CFer. Only if (which many people make the mistake) you gauge CF by bat only.

I know you love platooning Brian but my idea is whenever they'd sub Buxton they'd do it against RHPs thus Keirsey would be our best choice. Although Martin was a much better choice over Margot, I'd still minimize his time at CF & Castro is stretched there. For being a LH hitter, Keirsey has pretty good splits vs. LHPs. When Buxton is down for any amount of time, Keirsey makes the most sense because as you indicated, most pitchers are RHPs. As I stated before Larnach should have the most time DHing & emergency OF, so when Castro is subbing someone which is most of the time that leaves a space for Keirsey to fill in at LF when he isn't subbing Buxton. So even following their platooning mentality Keirsey makes a lot of sense, especially when you look how our defense stacks up w/o him. I can't see Julien making the active list. He's not a 2Bman & he has a long way to adjust his hitting & learn 1B. But Julien is one of their pets so it doesn't matter if he's good at either.

That's why I put him with the RH OFers. RH OFers- Buxton, Martin, (BH) Castro & Helman. I placed Helman last because he's not on the active roster & indicated Castro as a switch hitter who is used as a RH OF. But thanks anyway.

Keirsey is a very underrated, a player who has greatly proved himself at the AAA level, The fact that he is a little late bloomer & that the Twins have held him back at AAA is not his fault but the fault of Twins' philosophy. Many have written him off before he is even given a chance to play at MLB. Which is a grave mistake. Yeah, let's pick up another Margot or Gallo that makes a lot more sense. Give Keirsey, like Castro, a chance to prove himself before casting stones. "Ace in the hole" is an American English idiom that means a hidden advantage or resource that's kept secret until it's needed Buxton is our top performer that's not the intent of my comment but Keirsey is a hidden (he's overlooked) gem that is very much needed when played will amaze a lot of people & put us over the top.

Don't tell me they are putting Keirsey on hold again while they are looking for their next Margot/ Gallo? Theoretically, Larnach is DH, Castro is LF, Keirsey is the 4th OF, and Martin is utility. LH OFers- Keirsey, Wallner & Larnach; RH OFers- Buxton, Martin, (BH) Castro & Helman. Buxton needs to be our main RH CFer & Keirsey our main LH CFer. This backward thinking killed us last season. If we want to be a serious team, the 4th OFer has to be Keirsey's to lose.

The Pohlad Empire (Part Three): Modern Airfare
Doctor Gast replied to Peter Labuza's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
OMG, thanks Peter for opening our eyes, for taking time to uncover all this dirt. I've been led to believe that Carl Pohlads kept the Twins from being bought by outside buyers & moved out of state. The Feldman story is heart-wrenching. Just think we can thank Pohlad for our present airline situation. Although we can't blame him for Covid or 911. -
ML Ready, anyone that has a slight interest in stocks, dreams of getting into Apple when they started up. I have & also futilely mapped out how much $ I'd have made. I'm not a billionaire, but I assume most billionaires don't amass their billions by not buying stocks (unless they create an investment firm) but buying businesses. You have some control over your business, you don't with stocks. I'm not a contentious person & I don't fault anyone over their opinions. But I do find fault with Bean5302's snidely off-remark while quoting me. Otherwise, I'd have ignored his remark. Any money the Pohlads sunk into the team after they bought it is an operational cost, which is considered part of the decision to make a profit and rightsizing. Which is not under debate.

Although projections are interesting & give us a guide. I'd look at the projected depth at each position & calculate that corporately not starters & bench players individually. Projections are imperfect, based on past stats & underlying conditions. I like Fangraph the best but still there are some projections I don't agree with. The most glaring to me is Keirsey's projection. They have him hardly playing anywhere. IMO Keirsey is our ace in the hole, He should be our main CF backup, 1st of all his defense & 2nd his offense which will continually get better. Emma will make a bigger impact & if you include Castro's WAR as OF depth where he belongs & not DH, our OF looks much better plus our underlying conditions look much better w/o Margot. DH is more of a problem.

IMO the fireman role in '23 & '24 played a role in Duran's dip in '24. The fireman is extremely important, strainful & underappreciated by MLB plus being ignored to start, could have worn on Duran. IMO Duran should be settled in at closer at least at the beginning of the season & see how he does. If that happens then Baldelli would look to Jax to be the fireman. Then Jax might find himself in the same situation as Duran did. Jax is a great reliever & hope that Duran also remains as one.

Like a few have mentioned, it's pretty sad that we can get excited about Pohlads saving $2.5M on player salaries so we don't have to take a beating on a Castro or Vazquez trade. I also agree with T&R that there shouldn't be any big FA splash. IMO, we don't need to. With a couple of meaningful trades, we'd be in good shape.

That's what happens when you're pitched too much, too fast you end up on the IL. When you are limited innings, you actually pitch more quality innings through the season because you don't head directly to the IL in the beginning of the season. Raya is evaluated as an injury risk, they limit his innings & he has put in many more quality innings than Canterino. If Canterino is managed properly & placed in the pen, he can pitch many more than 60 quality innings for the Twins (yet 60 quality innings isn't bad for a RP). But if we push his arm as far as we can as a starter, we shouldn't be surprised when his arm falls off. It's like that old oil change commercial when the mechanic removes the oil plug & no oil comes out & the owner scratches his head, like "How did that happen?"

I can see where you're coming from. But Canterino has been managed incorrectly his whole career, especially in college. IMO when managed correctly (limiting his innings) due to his arm problems he be a force. Would I DFA Steward because he gets hurt a lot and is limited to the BP? There is a lot of potential in Canterino, it's a shame he hasn't been able to showcase it.

What catching depth? We have no MLB depth behind Jeffers & Vazquez. Cartaya hasn't conquered AAA yet if he's next in line we are in trouble. Helman is handy to have around & I wouldn't risk Canterino to go through waivers.

Comparing AL Central Rosters: Part 1 (Infielders)
Doctor Gast replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks, Seth for all the hard work you put into this. I'd prefer to use Fangraph projected WAR & use the combined WAR at that position. IMO the WAR you gave for Santana is super high, For 3 WAR, he'd have to be a monster masher. On Fangraph Santana (553 PAs) is listed at 1.5 & Miranda (455 PAs) is also at 1.5 combined 1B WAR, CLE is at 2.0 & MN is at 1.9. Very close, putting away projections I pick MN over CLE. Looking at catching combined WAR, CLE is at 3.5 & MN is at 3.1. There is a vast difference between Jeffers 1.7 WAR & Naylor's 2.8 WAR but looking at the tandem of Jeffers/ Vazquez to Naylor/ Hedges, the difference is slight.- 42 replies

Many Twins' developments are disappointing. Where the focus has mainly been focused on hitting HRs & the rest including SOs have been ignored. '19 the juiced ball, the HR focus really took off but unfortunately, after '19, MN was fed dead balls that hindered Sanos & Kepler's success as far as offensively. Sano was the poster child for the Twins' "Moonshot" propaganda but he became more & more SO prone w/o the HRs to compensate. Many of Kepler's HRs became FOs & the shift really took a toll on his performance.
-
It's a shame that Carl Pohlad & family never were interested in baseball. Still, he saved us from Cal Griffith & kept us in MN at least temporarily. His smartest move was to hire Andy Macphail. From a rich baseball family he was able to turn around the Twins from bottom feeders to World Series Champs. After he left, the Twins have floundered ever since. We need another Andy MacPhail.
-
The Cartaya acquisition does nothing to move the needle on the conversation about the Vazquez/ Jeffers debate. So far we don't even have a 3rd catcher much less a backup catcher. IMO we ideally need 2 young promising MLB-ready catchers (we have none) to be mentored so they can be ready to take over for when both Vazquez & Jeffers are gone. It'll be a big mistake to extend Jeffers to a ridiculous contact that he doesn't deserve just because it'd be the easy thing to do. That'll come back & bite us hard & be an albatross & a sore spot at a premium position. Any catcher we obtain would have to super achieve, be able to hit the ground running & handle the majority of the innings, to make up for the inferiority of Jeffers if we extend him & that's not fair for any catcher. It'll be a lot easier to trade Jeffers than Vazquez, We can trade Jeffers for a 2nd promising MLB-ready catcher, Vazquez we can't & we have to pay about 1/2 his contract. Vazquez can mentor these young catchers. That is the best case scenario. The worst case scenario. we trade Vazquez, we are stuck with backup catcher Jeffers, floudering AAAA catcher Camargo, AAA catcher Cartaya & AAA partime catcher Gasper trying to stop the bleeding. Then Twins extend Jeffers to an exhorbant contract & we are stuck with Jeffers & his contract for many years at this premium position. Blocking any chance for the Twins to advance into the postseason no matter how great we are everywhere else.

I am encouraged that the Twins aren't desperate to make a bad trade. But I don't think they have ruled out dumping salary but they have taken down the Fire Sale sign, which makes me happy. Social media is still buzzing with trades for Lopez & Correa. But they still say they want to be creative (that never ends well). He also said that the heavy lifting is done. What! What heavy lifting? 1 Rule 5 pickup, 1 nonMLB-ready catcher trade, 1 nonMLB-ready 1Bman trade & some MiLB signings. Hope they got some significant trade offers in some real promising MLB-ready catchers or otherwise forget about trading Jeffers or Vazquez. Hoping fringe players will get the job done is dreaming. None of the fringe RPs last year panned out. We still could use a high-leverage LHRP in trade.

I'm not saying the Pohlads to be involved in the daily operations of the Twins. So stop blowing this up making it something that it isn't. Joe Pohlads stepping in & say go sign Buxton to an extension is no different than them calling up Falvey & say "What the heck, forget the salary dump". Pohlads owns the team they set direction on salary, they are the ones that set the budget. They have every right through changing of conditions to change direction of budget without permission from Falvey. Let me put it another way. Falvey, being the head of operations, can't just decide heck with the budget, I'm not dumping salary. That is the Pohlads decision if they want create some good public relations. How is that like sweeping floors? Get real.

Twins 2025 Arbitration Deals (or exchanged numbers)
Doctor Gast replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Nice savings. I imagine that Lewis has high standards & this year was well below it so he settled for less. Any extension talk should be for Lewis. -
Before the postseason Twins named Jeffers as their postseason starter & in the offseason as their main catcher. I imagine it was only a vote of confidence for Jeffers & probably had no intention of having anything else more than an equal tandem during the regular season. That was the point that I was trying to get across.

If they invested that $44M in a bunch of poor businesses they would have lost money. I never said the Pohlads do the negotiations, but don't you think they have a say in their own business? The Pohlads don't sweep the stadium floors or do the plumbing work or coach the team in the dugout, either. How absurd!
