  1. Just curious .... What have you heard about the Twins ability to develop pitching?
  2. Maybe the Twins tried to get Pollack for Duffey. Who knows what discussions and/or emails/ texts get exchanged among front offices?
  3. Agree but the game plan likely is made from the private boxes. He was maxed out. We hope his arm felt good this morning.
  4. Pagan is mostly an asterisk. The Twins have incredible confidence in their assessment that Chris Paddock will be the real deal (J.D. Durbin). Paddack was a strong prospect in the same vein as Fernando Romero, Stephen Gonsalves, and Lewis Thorpe. Paddack, unlike the others, had a little success in The Show, so the love for him. Emilio Pagan was part of the price extracted to win the Paddack sweepstakes (TR to SD, $6.6 to SD, $2.3 for EP, & $2.25 for CP). The Twins won't keep Pagan past this year and his usage will depend on having some success. We shouldn't be surprised if ZIPs is fairly accurate but relief pitchers can also have short runs where they find their groove and the Twins are hoping for a few good outings from Pagan. Pagan is likely happy enough to be on the roster. He was destined for release by San Diego. Let us hope the new pitches work.
  5. Archer is still building endurance and throwing on the side is not the same as facing hitters. He looked really good for four innings and then it was totally obvious that he had lost both feel and command after two pitches in the fifth inning. It was painful to watch him struggle through the next three batters and he was elated to escape damage when Witt hit into a DP. I'm not sure what was going on in that inning. Was Rocco hoping Archer could complete five to get the W? For those who watched the game, he was toast and lucky his pitches stayed out of the strike zone for walks instead of being squared up. Archer should be good for 70-85 pitches next start if his arm is ok.
  6. Twins fans who are interested in watching a competitive team in 2022 will likely have a fair idea of the direction by June and certainly by the All Star Game. Many others, based on posts during the past several months, will look to the next five years and the minor leaguers as they support some ideal of asset management and responsible spending for small market teams. Today looks cloudy for the Twins and sunny for a few prospects, so it becomes a matter of which one supports. I am still hoping that Buxton and Kirilloff find themselves in the lineup 5-6 times every week. It is a long season and the better players need to show themselves sooner than later. Rocco? I just wish he would be less visible because he has bad luck.
  7. Some good plays but some not so good. Archer looked decent until he totally lost it and then pitched to two more batters after running out of gas.
  8. Wait, I just read through these comments. Did all of you guys get together at a bar and start in after a dozen shots or so? I missed the fun and crazy; these are hilarious.
  9. It should be noted that the Twins could have rostered Correa, Donaldson, and Rogers plus Bundy and Archer with the other players and still be below their current budget. They also could have easily gone to $150 million too. The Twins have their own ideas of what to do and it doesn't really have much to do with savings apparently or they would have rostered a team for $100 million or less. As others have noted in many separate posts - we will all get a chance to compare the outcomes by the end of this year and there will be another chapter added at that time. At that time Donaldson could be finished as could Correa or either might be an MVP winner. Vegas will take your money either way.
  10. Me too. I was thinking 70-75 wins as the most optimistic outlook for 2022 on Opening Day. There are more than few players struggling after ten games, but it seems like they have more potential bodies to step forward this year and I'm hoping for a trade or minor league hitter to help out. Feels like there are some possible improvements coming too. Sanchez looks relaxed and Correa will be fine. Buxton? Maybe he is back on Wednesday and things look better.
  11. Cron has had a nice little career thus far but he is not good with a glove. Sano was the obvious choice but his glove is a rock too. Sano still has a chance to be decent DH and hopefully Kirilloff comes back and plays first base. Rocco just follows orders and we may see Sano at 1B all season. We can wish Cron well, but I don't miss him.
  12. It is more than reasonable to think Donaldson was part of the problem. Perhaps, except for every player on record has had nothing but praise for Josh Donaldson. I searched articles from Oakland to Toronto to Cleveland to Atlanta to Minnesota to the Yankees and each time the posts are positive regarding JD as a teammate. I wonder if he was an irritant to GMs, managers, and reporters and this seems possible because there is not a similar track record of support from the management types and Josh called writers out for lazy questions and innuendo. He actually called out a reporter for this in his first press conference in NYC and his teammates absolutely loved it. Maybe someone (Falvey, Baldelli) will eventually come clean and explain this trade but for now it is totally guess work based on personal thoughts, some of which are quite unfortunately tied to money.
  13. People do want the pitchers and batters to get after it (Gardy), but without enforcement it remains the same as the rule already on the books thus a new rule is just redundant. The ghost runner is a total abomination because not all pitchers have the identical repertoire of pitches. The ghost runner absolutely requires a team to use a pitcher who has a very high K rate because infield outs and sacrifice flies bring home the winning run. Baseball would have more integrity and accomplish their stated goal of ending games without extra innings by simply adopting tie games. While I would not be in favor of that policy either, it is at least fair to both teams and a vastly better outcome than the ghost runner. Nobody can argue that each team has the same opportunity because the situation inordinately favors one type of pitcher over another. Maybe Duran gives the Twins a better chance this year.
  14. FWIW, Rule 6.02 directs batters to comply with timely play by staying in the batter's box and gives the umpire authority to call a strike. Every single pitcher in MLB knows the rules on pitching quickly. Every single pitcher has pitched quickly their entire lives. We can add pitch clocks in 50 places around the stadium but if the umpire refuses to call a ball or direct a batter to stay in the batter's box or call a strike the rule is worthless.
  15. Rule 8.04 When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.” The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher. The timing stops when the pitcher releases the ball. The intent of this rule is to avoid unnecessary delays. The umpire shall insist that the catcher return the ball promptly to the pitcher, and that the pitcher take his position on the rubber promptly. Obvious delay by the pitcher should instantly be penalized by the umpire. From the MLB 2022 Official Rule Book
  16. Agree. I would even consult three separate clinics to ensure there is more or less a definitive opinion on the issues with his wrist.
  17. Ryan looked great. Sano ran into one. Sanchez and Kirilloff squeezed hits through the infield, and the relief pitchers were fine. Arraez needs to make the play to him at third and Garlick needs to catch that fly ball, although as someone pointed out on another thread Devers does a good job of hitting a nasty pitch. Duran was good again, but looking at the box score he takes a dive statistically. They don't charge empty net goals against a goalie, but a no touch misplay rarely is charged as an error in baseball despite the wording of errors as normal effort.
  18. 2B is his best position, but it is already taken ... so DH. This is why, despite a deep appreciation for his tough at bats, Arraez was and is a prime candidate to trade.
  19. Watching the replay it is important to credit Devers for his hitting. However, Arraez cannot come up with a ground ball and Garlick misses the catch that bounces off the top of the fence means Duran should have been out of that inning without giving up a run if there is an every day third baseman and Kepler was in right field.
  20. Why? Garlick missed a fly ball that bounced off the top of the wall for a gift home run and then Duran struck out the next guy. Defense counts.
  21. That fly ball was a perfect example of why a really good outfield is important. Garlick should have caught that one.
  22. Ok. We just disagree on this. No problem. Manfred is going to do what he wants anyways.
  23. We used extreme shifts in the 1960s (even going to four outfielders or five infielders as the situation dictated) in all of grade school, VFW, high school, and legion ball. It is more common now but not new in any sense. I oppose banning the shift and unlike some others I do appreciate an out recorded on a hard hit ball just as broken bat hits are a part of the game. There are plenty of changes that can be made if people want changes to increase offense. Ball 3 is a walk and strike 4 and you are out. That would cause an increase in offense. If people want the game to have more tempo, allow the umpires to enforce the current rules that dictate a player needs to be ready to hit and the pitcher needs to pitch. Many of the changes just increase the time (challenges for example). I do think that electronic signals between pitcher and catcher speed up the game and is a positive change. It disrupts nothing.
