    I wonder if the future of friend and mentor Nelson Cruz as a Twin, would influence any decision to move Sano. Probably not. Regardless, I'd like to see them hang on to the big guy for another year.

    Yeah, there is a period of numbness. After spring training was shut down, and we didn't know if or when there would be any semblance of a season, I would watch large swathes of game 163 vs the Tigers in '09. One of the most remarkable games I've ever been witness to. Even though it wasn't officially the post season, it sure felt like it, and the Twins WON! At some point in the coming days, I'll probably refer to that antidote once again. Really good article, Mr Bonnes. I feel your pain.

    How about an over/under for wins. Let's hope that the standings (or season) are not dictated by the number of positive tests on any given team. BTW- Last year the Twins hit an astounding 1.89 hrs / game. That rate would put them at around 113 this season, hypothetically. Another big plus for the Twins...universal DH.

    Nicely done. Yes, the clock's running out. I've felt all along that the health protocol issues were being largely overlooked. Sadly, I think that in any attempt at a baseball season (or facsimile) now, the distractions would overwhelm the baseball. With guys testing positive, how can it even be considered?

    Man, I remember being blindsided reading about Ervin Santana's suspension just days before the season was to begin. That Rosario first pitch in the majors homerun with his ecstatic family in the stands was a joyous moment. Tracking Buxton and Sano, wishing and hoping.

    Thanks for this article. So passionate. I'm no economist, and I don't pretend to understand all the implications, and truth be told, don't really care. It almost seems that the main reason we are where we are has been forgotten. There 's still a deadly virus out there. So let's say there's agreement on an 80 game schedule. The season starts, and a single player tests positive. Then what? Because realistically, it is almost impossible for that NOT to happen. So if 2020 is ultimately cancelled, it should be for that reason.

    That was a fun read, Patrick. I think Byron has a young son named Brixton. How about a followup history on that name? I'm thinking it'll be even briefer....

    Agreed. This looking back series is very enjoyable. It's amazing how much you (or me, at least) forget! Also, how fleeting or precarious a player's trajectory can be.

    Wishfully thinking and hoping for overs on Buxton, Cruz and Garver. If Arraez bats .315, I'll be more than pleased. I'll take the under. You can't assume a Cy Young for anyone, including Gerrit Cole, so that's an under. How about an 0.5 for Sano winning one (or both) of the following: MVP/HR leader. I'll get the ball rolling on that one with an over!

    Cool and inventive post. thanks for that! If using "relevance" specifically, I'd say Mudcat Grant got somewhat ripped off. In 1965, he went 21-7, and pitched 2 complete game victories in the World Series, which the Dodgers won in 7. Even hit a 3 run bomba in game 6. I could barely remember Doug Corbett. To be fair, he was a reliever, and made the all star team in one of his 3 twins seasons. However WAR or no WAR, Grant has way more relevance in Twins history.

    Also remember Scott Diamond for being Canadian. He's from Guelph, Ontario, about 100 km (62 miles) west of Toronto.

    The only thing I can watch as a diversion right now is game 163, 2009. Remarkable, I think even more than game 7, 1991. (but that's just me} I never thought I'd utter or write these words, but at this point, I hope the season is cancelled in full. Whether I hope it or not, it's becoming clearer by the day that will be the case. We'll remember 2020 as the season that wasn't, and start fresh in 2021. It'll be amazing! Stay home and stay well everyone.

    Uplifting. I needed that. As an aside, regarding the final season of David Ortiz. When he was putting up those insane numbers, I thought, nah, this is too good to be true. I smell a rat. (steroid era suspect) As far as I know, no rodent was uncovered, which is great. I love Big Papi, both the player and larger than life persona. Anyway, back to Nelson Cruz. His 2019 season was truly awesome, and I'd like to believe he was clean, and can continue his Ortizian productivity. Apropos of nothing in particular,Tom Hanks said "there's no cryin' in baseball" , but there sure is cheatin'.

    Thanks for the informative article. Biggest factor here is time, to determine whether or not to pursue Berrios long term. And time is on their side (apologies to the Stones) There's no hurry. Wait and see how things develop with his velocity. The outcome might well impact his views on a Twins extension, too.

    David HK Great comments! "It's not who I am" , pet peeve of mine as well. Used so often, both in and out of baseball. Within the sport, two that come to mind are Kevin Pillar and Josh Hader, both for homophobic slurs. Guys, it came out of your mouth, therefore I'd say that it IS who you are. As for the Astros, after the ultra creepy Taubman affair, followed by what we know (so far) about the cheating scandal, and all its implications, I thought , man this team doesn't have a soul. I was one-upped by a sports journalist who referred to the Houston Astros as an absolute cesspool. Then there's owner Jim Crane. What a piece of work! My sympathies to fans of this team. Your loyalty is being harshly tested. In closing, I'd like to say just one more thing.... GO TWINS!
