  1. I find it interesting that the 'solution' to the Twins 2021 is to start selling off everyone in sight...so we can be competitive in, oh lets see, 3 or 4 or 5 years? thats just not the answer. Yeah--the 3 game sweep pretty much drove the final nail in the 2021 season, but the answer isn't dismantling the team. Not now anyway. The deadline selloffs don't do much to help the team. Offseason makes more sense when maybe Twins can get legit value for assets they want to dump. Pitching is priority though. Anyone been checking the recent performances of Robles and Alcala? Over the past 7 games....just a total mess. Over the past 15 games, just about as bad. These two guys are contributing nothing. We know the problems of all the rest too.
  2. After last nights beatdown (yes, I'm losing faith that this team can stay afloat) I was just thinking about something...I wonder what the demographic is on this site as to age? Its not a dumb question. The older one gets (or is...in my case) how willing or unwilling is that person to simply 'throw away' 2 or 3 seasons, like they were nothing? If one is young and has all the time in the world, does that in any way influence their thinking? Do they feel that its fine to just blow up, trade away, take chances on never tested prospects with the idea that maybe some will stick to the wall and create a winner years down the road? Remember the Cubs mantra or the Brooklyn Dodgers (well most here may not have been alive when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn) ...'wait'll next year' was the cry after another failed season. Sometimes there isn't a next year....when the Expos were stolen out from under me, suddenly there was no next year to look forward to. The Nationals hardly compensate...in fact I can't stand them. Anyway, I often wonder if age influences the way we think about our teams?
  3. For every situation, trade, deal etc, there will always be exceptions on either end. My contention is i doubt the Twins will improve much by selling. Certainly not this season (which isn't why 'bad' teams sell anyway). How many Tatis Jr's are there in the universe? For everyone of him, you have a cruise ship full of wannabe's and neverwills. My feeling about Twins 2021 is they have a lot of talent...and much of it is still young. I think this team, with a tweak in pitching, can contend in the AL Central next season. Plus, in baseball, you don't have to spend 'years' rebuilding. Teams go from worst to first all the time in one season. RedSox may be that team this year. While I am not ignoring the 'good deals' I am also not forgetting all the rest.
  4. Buyers? No. Sellers? Why? Sacrificing 2022? Absolutely not. After a pandemic with fan interest teetering, telling them that they don't plan on competing in 2022 is not very smart. Sellers rarely improve at the trade deadline. All they really do is shed salary. Twins can take care of changes during the offseason. Any visions of getting 'value' for Cruz, for example, is pie in the sky. His 'value' is highest where he is. No contender will be giving up young talent (not suspects) for a couple months of a 41 year old DH.
  5. discouraging loss for sure. I'm not raising the white flag yet. The killer inning was when the 3-2 deficit became 7-2 on a bunch of singles...and many with 2 outs from players you are supposed to get out. Can;t afford to lose the next 2. But the pitching is very bad...no question.
  6. Gordon first, then Refsnyder when he's ready. Celestino should be in AAA. He's one prospect that isn't ready to get playing time right now. My optimism will continue thru this coming week. If they finish below .500, it would appear that nothing much has changed. However if they do well, and start a decent run, the games will be fun. Statistically very few teams this far behind by July 1 ever make post season, but its not impossible...if your team is decent, but just not clicking yet. Twins are NOT the O's or the D'backs. However I do worry, a lot, about our pitching. And thats not rocket science is it!
  7. Didn't Twins win this series 2-1? Lost 4-1, then won next 2?
  8. If Sox lose the 2nd game today and the Twins move to 10 1/2 behind...there is this: an improbable sweep of the Sox could get them to within 6 1/2. If that happens, I have to believe the narrative must change. Thats not an insurmountable mountain to climb. If they win 3 of 4, they will be 8 1/2 behind. Still not undoable, but certainly more difficult. Anything else would basically be marching in step, going nowhere. These next 4 games are pretty important for a team trying to find itself. Should be very interesting. Can't give up hope.
  9. Twins won a division last year (fewer games...but they still won) They are struggling this year with basically the same players, give or take. One might even argue that on paper, we may be better than last year. Just that so many are having miserable seasons all at once. So Buxton wanting to play on a winner could still happen here. However, I don't think he has any warm feelings for this organization. The 'history' and the comments have not been particularly favorable. So any offer the Twins make may not matter. I'd like him to stay but it seems so very unlikely.
  10. I well remember the season when Twins left Buxton in Rochester. We were surprised and he was VERY vocal about it. His recent comment about Rocco not playing him didn't exactly sound like he is happy in Minnesota. Personally I believe he will be happy to leave and Twins will be extremely fortunate if they could retain him. Sad situation because b I too think we need to keep him. I doubt it's possible
  11. Seems to me the Twins issue is not with the position players. Its the pitching. And finding those diamonds in the rough is difficult. Would they trade Sano? Will they give up on Kepler and Simmons? With Buxton, will his injuries prevent the big payday that is expected? Is he happy staying a Twin? (reading the tea leaves, he sure doesn't sound real happy with Rocco) Will Kirilloff make it thru the season without needing surgery? He's a very important cog. Will Donaldson go? I think Twins need to find a regular spot for Gordon and Arraez going forward. Find out if they have a future in Minnesota. They are certainly decent talents. Is Jeffers ready to be the #1? Can Garver bounce back...maybe not as a catcher. Celestino and Rooker definitely NOT ready for prime time in 2021. How high are the Twins on those two? Any reason to keep Colome? Happ? Is Robles reliable enough? 2021 may be a lost cause, but are we to also expect 2022 to be the same...as a 'rebuilding' year? Do the Twins really need to rebuild? Or just tweak and hope they couldn't possibly be as unlucky with key injuries next year? The bullpen has cost us a lot of games this year. Focus on that.
  12. Nice analysis. I definitely don't want him going to the Sox. Even for just this season, I don't want to be playing against him. Maybe selfishly, but no....do not send him to a team in our division. As for the others, perhaps. Any lower prospect is always a risk...so unless Twins are desperate to get rid of Cruz, I doubt they will get 'value' for him...enough to compensate for the loss of his bat. If this will be his last season, I guess letting him go isn't the worst thing on the planet. If Twins are totally out of it (which is pretty likely), roll the dice and see if they get lucky. Honestly, most trade partners will not be willing to give up much...so it will be a charity move at best. I think its pie in the sky to think otherwise for a 40 year old DH rental. He may just end up being more valuable to the Twins if he stays. Trade someone else. But question: are they sellers at the deadline simply to shed salary or to improve the team...eventually?
  13. Bullpen blew our great comeback. Colome was awful for several reasons. Bad enough he couldn't keep the score close...but he was slow as a tortoise on the hill...that puts everyone in a bad spot. It was commented on during the telecast and rightly so. Pitchers who work too slow don't do anyone any favors. Robles today was terrible. I guess it happens. but after a 5 run comeback, his outing was pretty discouraging.
  14. What a horrible way to blunt a real nice extra inning win. The comment on MLB.com fits perfectly....'its just not fair'. How bad things tail Buxton like a bloodhound is simply....'not fair'. Maybe for once, the injury will heal quickly and he will miss the minimum of time rather than the longest recover. Meantime, two very unlikely heros last night. Shoe certainly wasn't the guy I expected to be nails in the 11th and 12th. Wow. And Sano...getting hits twice with 2 strikes....and the game winning HR was the cherry on top. 1st 8 extra inning games...losses. Next 4 have been wins. I think Twins will be a lot better with both Arraez and Kepler back. Arraez in particular needs to be playing everyday. Let's go for 6 in a row.
  15. He is a 40 year old DH. What team will give us value for him. He may be more valuable to us in reality. And if. (huge IF) its the Twins that make that run second half...he could be a big help. the most any contender would give up is a single A 'suspect' that may never make it past AAA. While that sounds like negative Nellie, there is a dose of reality there. If Twins simply want to do the charity thing, thats a different matter. but a decent return for Cruz....wishful thinking.
  16. My guess is he may want to stay.
  17. gotta be careful with Kirilloff. He is playing hurt. I wonder if he will make it thru the season.
  18. I totally understand the trade Cruz thoughts. And big picture, probably the correct thing. But what I don't agree with is the return. No team is going to offer much for a 40 year old DH to rent for 3 months max. It will amount to Twins mostly giving him away. I do have a very jaundiced view of things like 'top 5 picks' in baseball. Over the years, it almost seems like the budding superstars were very low picks, who just happened to blossom. Many of the top picks never really panned out. Hockey and football place a huge premium on draft picks. I just don't see it in baseball. All I'm clumsily trying to say is don't expect much for saying goodbye to Nelson. It will be a charity move....and if I'm wrong I will happily eat crow....because you never know about these things. Fun to discuss.
  19. I don't think the Twins will get much for Cruz. Draft picks in baseball are mostly crap shoots. A minor leaguer or two? Probably not. Perhaps a team in the AL that needs a DH to put them over the top could bite...but they won't offer much. All trading Cruz will do is do him the courtesy of maybe having another shot at post season. Also it could give Twins a chance to use rotating DH's second half. I guess that could make sense. Me, I think I would still like to see what this team could do second half with their complete lineup...selfishly maybe. Trading Cruz will not yield a good return. Wonder how he feels about all of this?
  20. I believe the Twins are a good ballclub playing poorly. The talent is there but between all the off years and injuries, they can't get their engine started. Still lots of talent underperforming on a regular basis. It would be fun to see this team with their strongest lineup playing for a month...just to see what they may be capable of. Do they have to trade Cruz? His recent hot streak may indicate he will be showcased to an AL team in the playoff hunt. I would hate to see that team by Cleveland or Chicago. But maybe he should just finish it out here. The return we would get won't come close to his value to the team. OTOH, would be a kindness to let him finish up his career with a shot at post season. So who knows? The pitching has really been miserable overall...but the position players are decent enough to be competitive...when healthy.. Give this team some pitching and they could be fun to watch second half. I would try and give Gordon a long look and see if he has what it takes. Kirilloff I fear is hurt and may not make it thru the season. I wonder if Kepler has anything left. His bat has really disappeared. Not sold on Simmons, Arraez I think should be given a regular position and like Gordon, should be out there everyday.
  21. Question...I wonder exactly what management is looking for in Buxton? If he comes back 'too soon' and gets hurt...well, that was predictable. but if they wait until they 'think' he's 100%, and he comes back and gets hurt anyway (which is likely), what has been gained? Buxton will get hurt no matter what. His trade value? Right now, who knows? Should we keep him? Might be nice. Would he want to stay here? Unlikely. Are the Twins in a no-win situation with him right now? I think they are.
  22. Twins can't string together a significant winning streak...so they continue to march in place, falling backward gently every week. The lineup changes every night. Usually when that happens, you are a bottom feeder. So have the Twins noticed something with Buxton that makes them reluctant to bring him back up? thats their call of course. But eventually, he is going to have to try playing with the big boys again. I don't think there is a person here who honestly believes he won't be back on the IL before too long.
  23. I agree its time to stop ragging on Polanco. He has definitely stepped up his game., and thats a relief! Get Buxton back up here! Don't waste anymore healthy games in the minors. The shelflife of a healthy Buxton is very short. If we can get another 15 games out of him...let it be as a Twin. I know I'm a cynic, but the history speaks loudly. Like to add this comment: Every year I attend an annual insurance conference in Binghamton NY. For several years our company has sponsored a golf tournament for The Black Aces for which Mudcat Grant took the lead for many years, while healthy. Had the pleasure of speaking with him on these occasions and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Last one of these before COVID we got to mix it up with Al Downing. Told him when I was at Navy Supply Corps School in Athens in 1974, we would often venture to Atlanta to see some baseball. I said, I was at one particular game that was very special that April. He looked up, smiled and said, 'yeah, I was there'!! then he signed a baseball for me..
  24. I have noticed this too since his return....he's definitely not the same hitter and it has to be because of the wrist. I agree it should be the medical staff making the decision before he ruins his career....especially in a season where the Twins aren't going anywhere. Saw the similar thing play out in the NHL playoffs with Tuuka Rask. He was playing hurt...claimed he was good to go...then gave up 8 goals in 2 games, pretty much costing the Bruins the series. He had no business playing with what we are now learning were pretty serious injuries. I think Kirilloff should probaby have the surgery and plan on coming back stronger next April.
  25. I could watch the replay of the 9th inning over and over and over. It wasn't like we hit those HR's off of Shoemaker! We beat their best and it feels real good. We slayed the Kracken, for at least one night!! I missed the live action too...was watching Vegas-Avs' hockey game. Figured it was the better choice. Twins should play Gordon (until he gets hurt)? Similar to Refsnyder. Interesting that Simmons recently has perked up slightly. (enhancing his trade value) Yesterday was the first day in ages where Cruz looked like Cruz again. If Buxton comes back in the next couple days..what does everyone think as to how many games he plays until the next breakdown? 5,10,15? Or fewer? Twins rotation is still a trainwreck. Probably won't get fixed this season. Anyone at St Paul ready to kick the can?
