  1. So far this month, the Twins team just isn't clicking or in synch at all. Yes there are injuries, but the lineups they have trotted out there last two games should have been able to produce more than4 runs...2 by 8th and 9th hitters solo HR's. Hitting (or lack of it} can't seem to get on the same page as the games where the pitching is good. the 'k count is frightening. Don't have to focus entirely on Sano...there are a ton of guys striking out far too often. The two out hit with runners on has become an endangered species this season. We all know they can and should do better eventually. But the trend is not good. If it doesn't translate into 'w's' hard hit balls and 'better swings' don't mean very much at all. Too much talent on this team to be looking this bad.
  2. when your 'closer' is one out away from the win and he walks the next two hitters, the result rarely is favorable. The two errors that followed were gut wrenching. The blown save in the 9th...terrible. Rogers coming in and immediately allowing 2 inherited runners to score...bad. Maeda getting lit up like Las Vegas after the Twins actually scored some runs...a harbinger of things to come. The bottom 3 in the lineup..pathetic as pathetic can be. Losing 13-12 (right after losing 1-0) might be a snapshot of how this team is going to look this season. One thing I missed. I know Cruz is banged up but why did Garver pinch hit for him? Was he really unable to come to the plate? Just asking.
  3. It was a brutal loss. A's got no hits in the 10th and scored 3 runs. Colome had this one with two outs and 1 runner on. then he walks back to back batters. Never good. You just have to throw strikes when you are a 'closer'. Then the two errors on routine grounders. Of course, When you're cold, you're cold and you find/invent new ways to blow a game. Taking your best defensive infielder out was just plain stupid. Didn't you also love Garver hitting for Cruz. Fortunately Bux bailed them out that time with a HR. Bottom of the lineup is like the pee-wee league. half the AB's were k's. Cave can't hit; Rooker is way overmatched and we don't have a catcher anymore that can make contact. The k's just keep on coming. Rogers comes in and does OK AFTER he gives up two quick runs. Colome is just plain awful. If the guy threw strikes, there probably wouldn't have been the two ground ball errors. Heck--we forgot the 9th when he couldn't hold the 1 run lead. this one was a total gift. When will it end?
  4. I'm encouraged by some who are trying so hard to will Sano out of his miseries,. Yeah, he may be getting some 'good swings' but he isn't getting results. You don't get any style points when it comes to wins. When the BA is hovering around .100, you aren't succeeding. But Sano isn't the only issue for sure. Many find the RBI stat to be outdated and irrelevant. Yet, you need RBI. Someone has to do it. TWins can't bring runners home this season. Until that happens, all the metrics are nothing more than numbers on a computer. When I see a runner at 2nd base, I want to see him score. Thats the responsibility of the guys who come next. I don't care how they do it. Just do it.
  5. Its pretty clear that the Twins are a hot mess right now. They have health issues and the ones who can play aren't getting the job done. Whats troublesome is how the manager is spinning this...almost like nothing is wrong...and that the switch can be flipped easily and suddenly all will be well. 'we can turn this thing around any day'. Great words of wisdom. Twins will come out of this. How and when will determine their overall altitude this season. Even good teams go into slumps. And not so good teams can string together winning streaks. Twins have dropped 8 of 9 and have looked bad doing it. Their offense has been really awful and the bullpen has not come close to being effective. Fortunately, there is a ton of time to fix this and so far no one in the division is running away with it yet. Plus, Twins haven't played anyone in the Central except Detroit. Last time Twins were shut out in a DH was 1961...I'm sure many who post here weren't even born back then. Rocco is right about one thing...tomorrow is another day.
  6. SAno really isn't being paid to take walks, while hitting under .100. Yeah, the walks are OK, but the fact that he can't make contact when he is in those situations that call for it will remain a big problem, until he figures it out. Maybe he will. Many here feel its just a matter of time. Still, historically he is still a very below average hitter with a lot of power, if/when he connects. Donaldson and Buxton MUST be healthy and so far, that hasn't been the case and its early. I concur, this season is going to be a rough ride.. at least so far its trending that way. i really want to see how they fare against Clev,. Chi, and KC.
  7. A's game Monday also postponed. Don't like that this is COVID related for sure, but the Twins will probably benefit by the time off. Between the injuries and the slumps, a break can't hurt.
  8. Gives the team some time to try and figure things out. Also gives Buxton more time to heal from his most recent injury. Maybe he'll be able to play 3 or 4 more games in a row before another strikes. Don't want to make light of any of this though. COVID is not going away. Its not a political hoax and it doesn't care what nationality you are.
  9. whatdya know. Sano doesn't strike out. He hits into an inning ending DP....sigh.....
  10. when a guy fans as much as Sano, a 6% 'improvement' or whatever, is like taking a bucket of water out of the ocean. I applaud all the believers who feel that one day he'll hit a few HR's again. The guy is barely hitting .100. If hes getting a first pitch strike nearly 70% of the time..he should start swinging at it. I don't really think he is in the lineup to take walks. Just a hunch. But then, there are too many others who can't even hit .200. And Buxton is nursing injury number 1,020,450 in his brief career. Hopefully by May some of this will straighten out.
  11. Pluses---We won, finally. We scored a run in the 9th, Sano hit a HR and didn't strike out today. Pineda was magnificent. Minuses- Another blown lead late. Rogers was awful. Real awful. the bullpen is a major concern for the Twins right now. No Buxton again. But--a win is a win and sometimes a win like this will jump start the team....as well as hitting the road. We'll soon see.
  12. Having watched baseball for more than half a century, lets take a walk back to the 60's or 70's when we weren't burdened down by all the statistics that tend to suck the life and enjoyment out of watching the game....and just look at what we see. What I have seen is that when players like Sano, who tend to strike out a lot, get into deep slumps, they all tend to watch perfect down the middle strikes to fall behind in the count. Then when its 0-2 or 1-2, they flail away at the pitchers 'out pitch'. I'm sure there can be a spirited discussion as to the pros and cons of swinging at 1st pitches. But when a hitter is going bad...a hitter that has trouble making contact...watching very hittable pitches greatly reduces his chances of ever putting the ball in play. I'm seeing this with Sano a lot. This is different than what Astudillo does. He is a contact hitter and probably should never swing at the first pitch...because pitchers know this about him and they don't give him anything good to hit on the first pitch. but when your confidence is in the toilet, like Sano...perhaps a change in approach would be wise. (yes, he still gets his walks but Twins need him to hit) Watching Sano is an exercise in total frustration.
  13. AS an O's fan for years too, I see a lot of Chris Davis in Sano.. Last year Davis lost all confidence and was a total mess...despite his power and potential. Maybe Sano will snap out of it...but even then, is he more than a .220 hitter at best. Until he can make contact and not swing 100% of the time for the fences, I am in the corner of those who feel Twins could do better.
  14. Epic Fail today. You have to work hard to blow a 6-0 with 4 innings to go. Colome should not be the closer. He has been brutal so far. The 9th inning was painful to watch. After Mariners got the 3 runs, it sure looked like the Twins just gave up. They went down like beaten puppies, quickly, in the bottom of the inning. Clearly, they looked and acted defeated at that point. Yes its early. Of course it is. Games like this will happen, but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow when you lose like this. Starter in too long; closer can't close. A few Twins hitters are starting slow. Very slow. And a few are really hot. Wonder if Polanco and Sano will ever get untracked. Jeffers struggling. Cave should probably be given his pink slip. But...Twins choked bigtime today. Pitching was in the bullseye, but the hitters did their part to do nothing after they got the 6 runs early. Time to get straightened out.
  15. Early observations: Twins don't know how to use the extra inning gimmick. Batting Astudillo in that spot, despite his 6-12 was wrong. You needed a guy to simply advance the runner, not swing from the heels and hit pop flies. And Sano is hopeless. he strilkes out 50% of the time and kills rallies doing it. Its not 'early' either. This is his career pattern. He needs to sit for a few games and work with the coaches. He can't go up there swinging for the Mississippi every AB. Rogers? Yeah, when we need the big pitch we aren't getting it anymore. Started mid-season last year. Let's see if he can turn it around.
  16. Nicw bounceback game for the Twins. Early this season, injuries and illness have kept the lineup in flux. Bet no one expected Astudillo to contribute so soon. Concern about Garver and Sano justified. I'd give Sano till the end of April tops to straighten out. Then if he doesn't, its time to try someone else. He looks a lot like Chris Davis these last two seasons. 4-2 start is fine.
  17. I concur--not a small sample size really. Just a continuation of who he probably is. The k's have never stopped. yes he will hit a mistake a mile, once in awhile. But you can't have a guy in the lineup every night that can't make contact.50% of the time. I have to believe he may have a short leash this season.
  18. agree that Polanco should not have tried to score. Buxton would probably have been safe at first and the sacks would have been loaded. I guess most felt that he could not have scored on Cruz's hit...which was too bad. More often then not the runner at 2nd scores on a base hit. Sano--well, 19 AB's and 10 k's in 5 games. 1 HR and 2 RBI. guess this topic is up for grabs with Twins fans. While I don't like the trend, it is consistent with his career. He may be on a pace for 30 HR's but also 250 k's if he gets 500 AB's. Rob Deer anyone?
  19. Its early. It was a bad game. Twins have yet to figure out how to win with the extra inning gimmick. They failed badly in both their extra inning games so far. On the plus side, Buxton and Cruz are off to great starts. Please stay healthy.
  20. Sign of the times: during the first 4 days of the 2021 season, no starting pitcher went further than 7 innings...and there were very few who managed that. If anyone chooses to go back into the archives of the 60's and 70's, they would see a totally different result from starting pitchers. The game as we knew it has definitely changed. Some like it, some don't. I guess we just need to hop into the canoe and paddle downstream with the winds of change.
  21. In the end...Twins played real well..won the series and now have to 'worry' about where to play Arraez when Donaldson comes back. Keeping this hitting maching on the bench as a utility player is unthinkable.
  22. 'a rather meaningless individual achievement'. That comment doesn't deserve further comment.
  23. I'll also say that after only two games, this board is a swirl of contentiousness already. Strong opinions in both directions. Frankly as in most things in the past few years, there is no middle ground and no one will more off their strongly held opinions, based on what I am reading. One side is just plain stupid to feel the way they do. the other side equally as stupid. Yay. I agree with those who find strikeouts boring. Exhibit A is Sano. To enjoy a potential 500 ft bomb every 6th game, you also have to endure 5 games where he will fan minimally 10 times and kill perhaps as many rallies. If this is what everyone wants, fine. Be prepared for a season of it. And I will hope that that HR he hits every 6th game is a game winner. (no sarcasm...that too would be fine!)
  24. Call me old school but can you imagine taking Carleton, Seaver, Maddux, Clemens, Koufax, Palmer and countless others out of a no-hit game after 84 pitches, 12 k's and no walks...no matter when it was pitched? Come on. How often does a pitcher get to throw a no-hitter? By taking him out, does that insure he gets 30 starts? This is major league baseball for Pete's sake. Or it least it was as I remembered it. It was stupid taking him out. You always want a chance to see something exceptional...since afterall baseball is still entertainment, correct? If starting pitchers today are that fragile (and apparently they are) the sport and its fans are the losers. When someone is doing something extraordinary...you let him finish the job. Totally not a fan of that decision and I suspect I'll get booed off the site for feeling that way. I want to see a baseball game, not a scientific experiment in sabremetrics, statistics and all the other stuff that has infiltrated the game. Ok. off the soapbox.
  25. It was a bad game. The 9th inning was positively ugly. Only one game but already one of our biggest fears might be reality after only 1 inning, with another Donalson injury. Please Buxton....stay healthy.
