    When you say that Houston got a 2-time all-star you misrepresent what the Twins had. They had 1 and a third seasons with Pressley. and they traded that 1 1/3 seasons for Alcala which he has 2 seasons already out of our pen with 4 more years of control. That alone is a no brainer. but wait there is more.... by acting when they did, they also received Celestino as a prospect at no additional cost. The extension is a separate transaction. You can't give Houston the extension because it did not exist at the time of the trade.

    My point was to illustrate how a rule five draft lotto pick was 5 years of a good reliever getting better then 2 solid prospects with one of them already delivering to a small degree with 4 more years of control. Its pretty obvious that Pressley was headed back to Texas in FA unless we extended him at a cost deemed to high to pay. I am sure if the Twins made a good extension offer of the 3 year 30 million variety he would have signed. But more than likely we only had 1 more year of control. so we are comparing that 1 year of Pressley to 6 years of both Alcala and Celestino. Evaluating this is a no brainer to me. It turned out to be a good trade no matter how mad I was at the time.

    Gladden was good defensively. He caught a fly ball that was over the fence and turned it into a triple play once against the Indians. I would love to see that replay again. Who are all of the members of the Twins Hall of Fame? Is Brian Harper in? it seems like he would be deserving as a top offensive C who played on the 91 team.

    If we are relying on all 3 pitchers then we are in a rebuild and not trying to compete in 2022. You don't want to bank on more than 1 back of the rotation spot and a spot in the pen is fine especially if the pitchers have options. I guess Dobnak does with his contract. I hope we do more to get more pitching. I think a Pineda signing and a trade for an Oakland or Cincinnati starter would be enough to at least make 2022 interesting.

    I think it all depends on how you value Pressley. Remember he wasn't acquired for much just a rule 5 draft pick. those are just lottery tickets to begin with. He gave us a great return on that pick. then we get 2 prospects one of which is looking good and has 4 years left and is getting better. The other minor leaguer looks like he could be a useful 4th OF for us or possibly a LF or RF and provide some more value. I think we got quite a bit from that rule 5 pick.

    I think a team friendly extension makes sense. but I see no reason not to go year to year. we have moving pieces and a mostly redundant Austin Martin in the wings. If Arreaz can net us a great return. I would be ok with that. Though I am enjoying his play here and would prefer him to be here. I think a viable extension should be more like the Polanco and Kepler extensions and be more front loaded. If Killeroff, Ober, Ryan, Larnarch, Jeffers, Alcala are all reaching higher salaries in Arbitration in years 3,4, and 5 of the extension, might as well gain some flexibility with a front-loaded lower cost extension here. let's see what that could look like. 5 year 22.5 million year 1. 3 million year 2. 4 million year 3. 4.5 million year 4. 5 million year 5. 6million this contract gives a discount and is front loaded to help balance the discount and to allow us more to spend when others are eligible for arbitration or free agency. also we probably want 2 options years or something like that. year 6 option for 11 million or 2 million buyout year 7 option for 13 million or 1 million buyout

    These are 3 good options. I do expect us to sign at least 1 reliever. possibly 2 or getting the 2nd one in a trade with options.... If the pattern this year is any indication, they may want to be able to send a few relievers down when they burn through their relievers and need fresh arms.

    The other fun prospects to follow was Pearson (the OF we got from the Angels for international signing cap space) and David Banuelos (the C we got from Seattle for the same thing) basically nothing..... Banuelos is in AAA must be a good defensive C cause he doesnt hit at all career .570 OPS anyone know what happened to Pearson?

    Does anyone know how the other prospects that Atlanta had to let go are doing? Are any still prospects?

    Didn't Duffy get better in the 2nd half of the season. I imagine 2020 played a part in control issues and getting out of rhythm. I suspect Duffy will be fine this coming season.

    The discussion is about Martin so if we traded Martin for Bassit straight up and sign Bassit to a 4 year 64 million contract we end up with 2 starting Pitchers for Berrios. Granted a 2nd transaction with the 4 year contract occurs. And then A's get a CF. We probably see about the A's including a reliever in this trade and we include a flyer prospect as well. I am ambivalent about whether we should trade him or not. I think if trading him gets us closer to winning then we should trade him. Though I can also see us trading Kepler to be the As or Miami's CF the next 2 years along with a prospect or 2 for a starting pitchers with Martin taking over RF or LF.

    I am hoping for the best from Ryan and Ober, my minimum expectation is that 2 of Ryan, Ober, Thirpe, Dibnak, or Max can hold down the 4th and 5th spot in the rotation 5 to 10 starts till others start to show they are ready for opportunities like Winder or Balazovich. In this expectation the Twins will need to sign or trade for 2 established staters. Otherwise its management putting all of the pressure on those 2 to succeed.

    I don't remember the Twins bullpen being the problem during the second half of last season. If our bullpen is better than average and we have enough to close out close games and hold leads more than average then I will be happy. I hope we do go out and sign a name reliever for the pen, but I also think we are close to good enough with what we have. I am more worried about the rotation at this point. I think we just need a good SS and a bullpen arm and 2 starting pitchers and we should be ok. maybe an 85 win team with potential for more depending on the young guys.

    What about the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft. We did get Brian Buscher from the minor league rule 5 draft.

    The Twins were bad last season because of a few bad pitchers....Dobnak, Happ, Shoemaker and Charlie Barnes and John Gant and of Course Colome. but the starting pitchers listed above combined to go 10-29 and all of the blown saves from Colome. THe other issue was injuries to a few key players like Buxton and Garver. Simmons slumped badly as well. So i would imagine with better pitching and a healthy core lineup we will be good again. So trade. I hear Odorizzi is available again. That would be a nice 1 or2 year contract to have on the books. What would we need to give up to get him.... Probably Rortvedt would do the trick. I mean a solid defensive back up catcher on a minimum contract on a team needing to keep expenses low where they can.... Bassit is a great pick up if we extend him. We could have a Berrios quality pitcher for the next 4 seasons at a cost of 60-65 million. yes we should do this. We also have some improving players coming up as well So we could go into next season with these 6 potential starters. Bassit Odorizzi Bundy Dobnak Ryan Ober We will need to get another reliever or 2 as well. Do we sign any free agents or go the trade route there as well? Also we need a SS. Vilar or Story or Simmons..... any will do. With these moves we should be an 85 win team with the potential to do more....

    I think this is why most of the pitchers we keep talking about getting are on short term deals. Pineda for 2 and a trade for Bassit on 1. Rodon on 1 year prove it again......

    With Miranda being from Puerto Rico I can see the Marlins asking for him in a trade.

    It seems to me the DH will mostly get split between Sano and Donaldson in 2022 unless the Twins bring Cruz back for one last go around which I doubt. I mean they could make an offer to help drive up his price as a favor and end up getting him back on a low cost 1 year deal.... but regardless at this point I think planning on a Donaldson Sano platoon at DH with Sano getting 100 + games there and Donaldson in the 30-60 game range and another 80-120 games at 3rd. Arraez is one of the Bench players and Gordon is the likely other. I think Miranda is able to come in and fill in a utility role if someone gets hurt and Arreaz gets more time at third or Arreaz gets injured...... If Miranda does come up we want him in the lineup as much as possible so 10-20 games in the OF is a possibility.

    Resigning Pineda and trading for a starter completes the rotation. If we trade for a starter like Bassitt then he and Pineda will cost almost as much as Rodon by himself.

    I hope to see David Banuelos spend some time with the Twins. We acquired him for international spending capacity from Seattle during the Ohtani chase. I will feel like we got something for nothing if he can be a backup catcher or part of a trade for a pitcher.....

    So far Pineda is still available and there hasn't been much movement on the trade front for starting pitchers. The Twins can still sign Pineda. They did sign their rebound candidate in Bundy. U was thinking Kluber ..... On trade Bassitt makes the most sense as he will cost the least od the big names and we should have Oakland throw in their SS to bring the cost down even more. Plus Bassitt will be a reasonable cost extention candidate. 3 year 45 million give or take.

    I was hoping for Kluber to be our injured rehab pitcher but Bundy will do. I still expect the Twins to resign Pineda. That leaves us with trading for Bassit or....... I can live with that rotation. Winder or Duran will be up soon. so someone can get injured by bad results if need be.
