    Me Neither. It was clear they were not looking for a catcher in return so a third team was needed. After that... It's odd.

    Well if Arraez for Lopez ends up being the case... I have five thoughts. 1. I'll wait to make judgement when the off-season is over. 2. I thought we needed two big upgrades on offense with Arraez still on the roster. I think we will need 3 if Arraez is traded. 3. Once Arraez is gone. Christian Vazquez becomes the 2nd highest BA on the team. 4. Luis is fun to watch at the plate. Perhaps the hitter I looked the most forward to. 5. If we acquire Pablo Lopez and we already have Jorge Lopez... We might as well go get Reynaldo from the White Sox and corner the market.

    There was a lot of talk from the experts on MLB Network radio saying that the Murphy trade was taking so long because the asking price was too high. Looking at what the A's got back... I'm not so sure I understand what the experts were talking about.

    If Kepler is two wins above replacement for the Mariners, wouldn't he be two wins above replacement for us. If Kelenic and Trammell have struggled to turn a corner. Couldn't the same be said about Larnach and Kirilloff. Is it possible we are trying to get rid of Kepler because the two wins above replacement isn't keeping us warm at night.

    Interesting. A Yankee fan not happy. Actually sounding like some of our Twins fans in his complaint. I was listening to MLB network a couple of days after the Judge signing and some caller was stating that Hal is to cheap to address the pitching. This was AFTER the judge signing. Is it possible that you can never spend enough to stop these sentiments? Is it possible this attitude can't be satisfied and is therefore perpetual? Is it possible that this attitude is prevalent in every single fan base? Is it possible that it's just part of the human condition.

    Could be the injury that hurt him or the less reliable defensive metrics. I question the weighting of the non-routine play that occurs. A RF or LF only makes a couple of plays a game and the overwhelming majority of those plays are routine. The penalty for a single botched routine play or the reward for a single non-routine play has to be too high because the defensive stats are making up a lot of offensive ground. A RF might get one chance every 4 to 5 innings. 4 out of those 5 would probably be classified as routine. A difference making play might be one every 3 games. I really appreciate the conversation.

    From a talent standpoint. He's 25.7 years old. He should put up decent number for a while. From a value standpoint. Yeah... He has most likely peaked. He is in his first year of Arbitration. Next year he gets a pay bump and one less year of team control. The Following year he gets a pay bump and one last year of team control. Both the increase in pay and loss of time will start the value slide downward. We would probably never get a higher trade value for him than right now. With that said I am still quietly hoping that the front office takes a different route.

    I'll reserve judgement until the end of the off-season. However. Let's say they trade Arraez for Lopez. If a trade of Arraez for Lopez happens... Nick Gordon will become the highest returning 2022 batting average on the current roster. You would have to have incredible confidence in Larnach and Kirilloff doing something they haven't yet to be comfortable with that.

    Good Post. I think you hit on the crux of the discussion. What needs the immediate attention? The Young Pitching or the Young Hitting. The young hitting worries me more. The young pitching worries you more. The answer must be both. ?

    It's getting harder to acquire prospects because everybody is holding them. Maybe that's a plus consideration for the Padres. Their willingness to part with them made them more attractive trade partners. The only thing I'm reasonably sure of... Once the farm is drained... the only way to avoid the rebuild is too spend more. The Padres have drained the farm and the 10 year deals have been signed. The Padres are not the Yankees, Mets or Dodgers who could spend their way through a drained farm. Yet the Padres drained it anyway while the Dodgers keep their favorite prospects and the Yankees have been hanging on to those two young shortstops with both hands. The Red Sox drained the farm and Betts and Bogaarts are gone. The Cubs drained the farm and the rebuild has started.

    Thank you for this. I really appreciate it. I learned some things about the offensive weighting/adjustments from year to year. I'm still struggling with the defensive weighting that is taking place.

    That's kind of insulting. Let me squeeze into this elementary school sized desk so I may learn. Are you telling me that it's possible to have a productive farm system and spend in free agency? Please go on. Can you also go over the H and the C on the taps. Can I turn on both of them at the same time? I'm tired of burning my hands when washing them. I'll need a refresher on why we platoon if you don't mind. Anyway... Thank You. The Padres have obviously figured it out. If the Twins would just do the same thing we could start planning the parade. I understand this now. Thank you again.

    No argument from me on Sentence 1, 4 and 5 and I agree with sentence 3 as the answer to sentence 2. Although I got to admit that I've lost your point, since you are quoting me from a post about 2002. Then mixing that quote with your first sentence where you are paraphrasing my run-on thoughts on development in a different post and a different context where I was given two polar options to consider. But wouldn't you rather have a real chance to win a title or at least playoff games for a period of years, then tear it down if you have to and start over? Or would you rather wait and wait and wait and wait for your guys to develop and hope you can catch lightning in a bottle one of those years Are you under the impression that I don't believe that teams can spend more and develop at the same time?

    I won't deny the correlation between spending and success. But, I also won't deny the obvious class structure that exists in the game. The Padres are not the Yankees, the crash will most likely come. The Bill will come due. If you sell your farm and sign the 10 year deals.... the window won't be open long. A couple of key injuries and that window slams down on fingers quickly. Pretty soon, they are trading Edwin Diaz to get Cano off the books. Are the Padres closer than the Twins right now. In my opinion... Yes they are. Are they closer in 2024... Let's see if they keep spending to sustain it. Are the Angels or Rangers who are dropping a lot of dough closer than the Twins? I'm not so sure. For Clarity on my thoughts... I think the Twins should spend a lot this year... No Bundy's... I want players, but... holding the Padres high in the air and pointing at them like they have shown us all how to do it. I will stop at that water's edge.

    I agree with you. I don't want to spend just to spend. Spending 10M on Dylan Bundy is spending that I could do without. Although, I'm not sure that we can compare front offices. Your examples were under Terry Ryan. I have the impression right or wrong that Terry was more conservative financially. Payroll rose immediately under Falvey and Lavine. Maybe not to the levels that others would like but the team was instantly more aggressive once Ryan was replaced. I have no idea... Just what I'm seeing with my binoculars from a distance.

    The Nationals are the current example of the rubble. The majority of their fans seem to be upset with the trade of Soto.

    2002 It ended a 9 year playoff drought for the Twins We lost to the Angels who had ended a 14 year playoff drought and the Angels went on to win the World Series. Adam Kennedy who hit 7 home runs in 474 AB's during the regular season hit 3 Home runs during the ALCS. @glunn In 2002 the Angels were 15th in payroll at 62M... The Twins were 27th in payroll at 40M, What does this have to do with the 2023 Padres payroll? ?
