  1. I wrote an article similar to this question a while back: What is more important, the ride or the results.... Personally I would rather see a competitive team year-in and year-out...
  2. Some context for this article would have been nice. How can you have an article discussing this group maybe being the best ever without doing any actual research and comparison?
  3. All depends on how the days off work: Lopez, Gray, Maeda might be enough. If not, Whichever of the Ober/Ryan/Keuchel they think is pitching the best and will give them the best chance to win. The other two should theoretically end up in the pen bumping Sand and Floro.
  4. Whomever signs Ohtani, the on-field production is only a part of the package. The player salary is a small part of the consideration. We all know Ohtani is a unicorn that transcends the game. International visibility, merchandise sales, games on national television... Working on the assumption that Ohtani is willing to come to Minnesota, I think you pay whatever it takes to get him here. Minnesota is working on a new TV rights contract this Fall. Imagine having Ohtani in the fold during discussions. The Twins have a strong young core that should be playoff competitive for the foreseeable future, another great selling point. It isn't my money. I don't know all of the economics involved. But the numbers have to come close to working out. Do I think the Pohlad's would have the guts to pull the trigger here? No chance. But they should. 10 years with a player option at 4yrs and again at 6 yrs.
  5. I was able to attend this game in person. Everything else aside, from a fan's standpoint this was an incredibly enjoyable game to watch. Intensity every half inning, back and forth battles, mistakes and successes from both teams. And a Twins walk-off to top it off... Games like this remind me of why I enjoy baseball...
  6. This is the actual crux of the argument against pushing up the pitching prospects. If the Twins go out this offseason and re-sign two of Gray, Maeda, and Keuchel, the rotation is theoretically set. (Yes, like it or not, do not write off Keuchel just yet) Personally, I can really only see Maeda back, but the way contracts have gone in MN over the last few years, nothing would surprise. I think if Varland looks ready, but not able to crack the 2024 rotation, he would be moved. Quality SP are always in short supply, BP guys can be found on the cheap every off-season.
  7. I didn't think you had any more room left for nails with this FO...🙂
  8. If the Twins thought Varland was better than we we currently had, he would be up on the big team. He has not been blowing people away this year at any level.
  9. Investing money or prospects into the BP, either in the offseason or the trade deadline, is a HUGE risk. Reliever volatility is extremely bad. The number BP guys that can and should truly command a haul in a trade or signing is extremely low. People forget that this rotation is near the top in IP because they have been so strong. When they get into the playoffs, they will only need 3 starters and 3-4 relievers due to all the off days. Is anybody going to complain if Maeda and Ober see middle innings during the playoffs? Keuchel is still in this discussion as well. It would have been nice to see a few additions to this team at the deadline, but I am not going to presume to know why they made the decisions they made: Pohlad's dictating no salary increase? FO feeling cost for moves was considered too high? Other teams not wanting to work with Minnesota? Players not wanting to come here? When you truly know who to get mad at for the deadline decisions, let me know.
  10. The Twins will not be able to replace Gray's numbers next year, he is basically a top 4 SP right now. I have always thought Maeda would be a great extension candidate. One year with and option or two would be ideal, but it might take a 2 year deal to keep him. No contract incentives so the Twins would be able to move him to wherever he is needed without any hurt feelings.
  11. Again Stu, you blur the line between satire and reality... For everybody that has been calling for the FO to be fired, please pause for a second and take a look at this situation in Chicago (you can add the Angels as well). Money is not an issue for the White Sox and they are a complete disaster. Understand that it could be a lot worse.
  12. Don't compare Keuchel to Ober, Ryan, Jax, or Duran. He needs to be looked at compared to Winder or Sand. When you add in his experience, if Keuchel pitches just ok the rest of the way, he most assuredly will take a roster spot from one of those guys.
  13. Speaking to the back end of the bullpen, those numbers will probably be skewed in the playoffs. The Twins will probably go Grey, Lopez, and one of Ryan/Ober. This means Maeda, Ryan/Ober, and Keuchel will be in the pen (unless they decide to leave Keuchel off the post season roster for a position player, which is possible). Considering that Sands and Winder will never pitch in the playoffs, this issue should not be as big of a concern.
  14. OMG... I just read that article. Not a big Souhan fan, but boy did he hit that one on the head. Seth posted about it a week ago, I am not surprised it did not hit any traction on this website. Too close to home for some methinks...
  15. I thought I had read somewhere that the Twins SP are in the top 2 or 3 in IP this year. Also, this year Ober has also blown past the most innings he has thrown in any professional season. Maybe a little insight into the decisions being made last night...
  16. While the low number of PA plays into this discussion, Jim Thome's 2010 season was statistically worth a note here: PA 340 OPS 1.039 OPS+ 182 Pretty amazing age 39 season.
  17. I am not going to get too excited about any of these guys until after they return from ACL and/or Tommy John surgery. We all know it is going to happen to them at some point... Welcome to Minnesota Professional Sports Fandom...
  18. I was reading your quote and thinking the exact opposite. IMO so many articles nitpick on every possible negative aspect of the Twins this year. It has been hard to read looking for actual neutral articles or different takes on things, rather than the same old "car wreck" articles virtually every day. That being said, underdogs and overachievers are always more fun to root for. I think the Twins have gotten to .500, but not in the way everyone expected. The offense was supposed to be good and the pitching was supposed to be mediocre. Instead, the complete meltdowns from the guys expected to be core guys: specifically Correa, Buxton, Vazquez, Miranda, and Gordon make everything look like missed opportunities. Everything does tighten up in the playoffs. Good pitching often is more reliable than good hitting in October. No delusions of grandeur here, but there is a chance this year could look different.
  19. Thank you for addressing this. In today's game flexibility is key, it is not very common for a player to be truly "blocked". For a player like Polanco, being on the roster is more than just the numbers on the back of the card. Leadership and mentoring can be huge for a team like the Twins that have a bunch of young middle-infielder types on or near the big league level. Not as much of a lock as Kepler, but I think there is a good chance his option is exercised.
  20. BR has Jeffers catching in 62 games this year. Twins have what 38 games left? He catches 75% of those, you have 90. With very few exceptions, catchers are now part-timers. Health is the number one reason. Catchers that can hit will DH vs Catching on their "day off". Blame Buxton for that not happening more often. Twins fans should be well aware the health risks involved with having a great hitting catcher. I don't see it as a missed opportunity as much as keeping him healthy.
  21. Not looking to pick a fight here, but the days of full-time catchers are basically over. Only 13 catchers caught over 100 games last year in all of baseball. (Vazquez was one of them, but that hasn't been working out very well so far). If Jeffers stays healthy, he should finish between 90-100 games caught this year. Welcome to the new era of starting catchers.
  22. Why not? Put Jeffers at 1B. Let's gut Buxton off the schneid when he comes back from injury and put him at 3B. No chance of him running into a wall there. We all know Wallner has a rifle in the OF. We are looking for more RP help, let's start pitching him in the 7th inning from now on. Polanco's knees seem to be holding up. With Jeffers at 1B, he could probably handle some catching duty...
  23. Is this a prospect list or the best Twins players under 25? Seems to be a mishmash of both...
  24. Gray is having a nice year, but the numbers do not add up. His counting numbers are not that great, is doesn't lead in any of the big "stat" categories. Not much of a discussion here. He may get some votes, but nothing higher than 4th place. Cole, Ohtani, and Gausman will all finish higher in the voting. If he reels off 7-8 killer starts to end the season, there is a small chance he may be able to push the needle, but that is what it would take.
  25. Two words: Service Time They will not let him "grow" while the clock is ticking. They will want him as ready as possible when he comes up. His slow AAA start is the most public piece telling us he is not there yet.
