im not sure which is more shocking: the Twins scoring 9 runs, or Pagan pitching not one but two scoreless innings.

If he stays, fine - but he better start playing like he's worth the money he's being paid. If he opts out - we still have a full compliment of a starting IF assuming Lewis is healthy (Miranda, Lewis, Polanco, Arraez). The money freed-up by a Correa departure gives the front office more to play with to overhaul the outfield, the entire pitching staff, and getting a DH that's worthy of the title.

Its really, really hard to just say that the performance of these veteran players hasn't been impacted at all by the coaches. Is it THE ONLY problem? I doubt it. Is it a major contributing factor? Absolutely.

This is something I was wondering about after I heard it happened (I didn’t see it live). Who’s responsibility is it to make sure the indication is received? Basic communications 101 tells me that both the sender and receiver need to be involved for proper communications. If the ump indicated there was a mound visit but didn’t get an acknowledgement in return, shouldn’t that mean the ump needs to send the message again?

So not only are we slumping offensively, but Rocco now apparently can’t count to two, and the highlight was not getting no-hit. Staying the obvious but we are trending in the absolute wrong direction.

I'm still very likely to tune in, but we've seen enough of a sample size to know what this team is. Cleveland is going to do little/just enough to keep this interesting, but I'm not even hopeful for a wild card spot at this point.

That stat on Ryan being the first Twin to get to 100, and the Twins being the last team in baseball to get a pitcher to 100 innings just has be shaking my head. With all of the glaring problems we've had with the bullpen I absolutely do not understand why we haven't stretched pitches for one more inning more frequently.

Dodgers 8, Twins 5: Late Home Runs The Difference
HokieRif replied to Andrew Mahlke's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That makes too much logical sense… and that speaks to Rocco’s style. Everything is always shuffled around and we wonder why the players can’t produce consistently. Maybe if they played consistently there would be some consistency in the fielding and the hitting. I would rather see everyone grinding under a division title is locked up, then we can look at some rest days to get prepped for the playoffs. Instead, we’re squandering our chances of making it in.- 60 replies

Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez
HokieRif replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have even more appreciation for him now that I've seen what the pitching staff has done without him in the lineup. I think he calls a better game and has more of a connection with the staff than many give him credit for.- 113 replies

Twins Acquire Orioles Closer Jorge Lopez
HokieRif replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First thing I thought of when I saw the Rogers trade news this morning... although its unlikely they are giving up anything unless they improve the closer situation. So, unless they are looking specifically for a right-handed closer (which we happen to have at the moment) I dont see that happening. Just wish we could roll-back time and nix the Rogers trade in the first place.- 113 replies

I’m so conflicted about last night. On one hand the pitching staff stepped up huge last night and kept things manageable, and clutch hitting late in the game. On the other hand: - we shouldn’t need to walk off against the Tigers - 7 innings of anemic offense will NOT cut it. Not in a pennant race - Miranda is going to need a lot of time in the training room because his back has got to be killing him while he’s carrying the team

Have the Twins Seen the End of Miguel Sano?
HokieRif replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Added for emphasis... A lot of Sano's career, in my opinion, has been based on potential. Potential which he has not played to these last few years. We have had a very limited sample size this season, but I can't fathom how he can get his season on track immediately and start producing now, and right now that roster spot is more valuable than Sano's adjusted potential. I hate to say it but its time to cut and run. It would be great if we could find someone to trade for him, but DFA is what I think is most likely to happen.- 37 replies

I didn't watch the game, but waking up this morning and when I looked at the score I wasn't surprised. What I looked at Sano's stat line I wasn't surprised. When I saw the offense go limp I wasn't surprised. What surprised me was that Rocco let Ryan take all those earned runs without pulling the ejection cord early, and then apparently with no pressure on the bullpen decides to go lights-out the rest of the way - THAT was surprising.

The fact that Buxton isn't ranked should be a reason to question this index in its entirety. Any player, manager, coach, or GM would tell you, probably immediately, he's one of if not he best defensive outfielder in the game.

I just want a shutdown closer. And the guy leading the league right now in that category was is in a Twins uniform less than 12 months ago and is probably a week(end) away from exceeding his career high in saves. All of that is to say the front office isn't giving me a lot of hope right now to take care of the bullpen the way we all have been begging for. Bard seems to be the right target... maybe we can entice them with the idea of Miguel Sano hitting for half the games in the thin air of the Rockies.
-
I think its because of this faux connection that Sano has lasted longer in a Twins uniform than Papi did. I would have done the same thing that the front office did in holding out hope that he would put it together because there is too much raw talent. He's just never been able to consistently elevate his game to be that superstar that many hoped he could turn into.
-
I try to put this in perspective - Personally, and probably for many fans, the desire to resist trading him is because of another player that also had a lot of struggles early in their career: David Ortiz. Ortiz was released because he would have cost a paltry ~$2m a year, and got nothing in return. We had roughly the same MLB sample size with Sano as we did with Oritz. Sano's MLB story still needs to be written, but Ortiz's was rare in becoming one addition on a relatively short list of first-time ballot hall of fame inductees (I had to look it up - https://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/First_Ballot_Hall_of_Famer) My point is this - we may be gun shy, but the odds of making a trade or cutting Sano and having the results play out anywhere close to the way it did for Ortiz are minuscule*. The team has proven they can win without him, and they shouldn't take away playing time for the current players to make room for him. * of course, leave it to the Twins to let someone go and have them turnaround their career in to one that is worthy of the HoF.

Who is Part of the Twins' Long-Term Core Four?
HokieRif replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looking at the rosters right now for the 87 and 91 teams... I wouldn't call it the "core four" - more like the "remaining seven" Puckett Hrbek Gladden Gagne Larkin Al Newman Randy Bush I didn't realize there was 100% turnover with the pitchers and catchers between the two world series- 84 replies

Pondering a Nelson Cruz Reunion
HokieRif replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only reason I could see to bring him back would be his leadership. But that's not what it appears the 2022 version of the Twins need. What they need is another arm upgrade (or two) in the bullpen, not another bat at an extreme price. To the point(s) made earlier in the thread, there are too many younger bats that need consistent reps right now (Kirilloff, Miranda, Gordon specifically) and adding Cruz would chip away at those. It also means on days where Buck or Kep need a light day then they are out of the lineup entirely unless called on to pinch hit. I'd rather everyone get slightly more reps. -
