  1. Let's face it. Target may be a wonderful "venue" on a perfect late spring or summer day. But what does it do for an actual home field advantage? Absolutely nothing. What does it get the Twins to start the 2020 season? A 7 game west coast road trip after spending the spring in FL. Maybe Twins should join the Cactus League.
  2. Not only did the Washington Nationals not go "all in" in 2019, but they went "all out" when they let Harper go. The Phillies went "all in" and I don't think they made the playoffs. Or maybe they did win the World Series and the Nationals winning it was a mirage. I would be very happy to see the Twins win the Central again in 2020 and then not go into a coma just because a team has NY on its unis in the playoffs.
  3. I think Bo Jackson would be better. Don't you love all the wanna be GMs?
  4. We still don't know what a Miguel Sano for an entire, or close to entire, season is. I would love to see him show up for spring training in great shape, start on opening day and play 150 games or so. Same for a guy named Buxton for that matter.
  5. And what did the Vikings do? I am pretty sure signed an over rated free agent named Cousins who has never/will never win a playoff game. The only decent move the Reskins have made in the last almost 2 decades or actually non move by not signing him. Great example of why you don't sign free agents to huge LONG TERM contracts.
  6. 6-8, 3.98 in NL with no DH. Pick any pitcher at random and get the same. For the life of me I do not understand this constant obsession with getting anyone on a huge contract; doesn't matter who. Just spend the bucks. I will sign tomorrow for 5 years at $20mil if it will make the budget busters happy. How much would you contribute out of your own packet for Darvish to be on the Twins? Very easy to spend other folks' money. Ask any Socialist.
  7. I thought April Fools Day was in April. Please get off this free agent / trade kick as a miracle cure for a 101 win team. Angels have just sealed their doom by signing Rendon (I thought Pujols was the answer; where did that get them?)
  8. And where did that "best pitcher in baseball" get the Astros? A loss in the World Series and probably a downhill slide for the next few years after going all in and losing. Twins need to find the next Cole, not sign the existng one. Goal is the same for 2020 as it is for every season. Stay in playoff contention and hopefully win the Central again. Twins lost to the Yankees by wasting scoring opportunities, not pitching overall. The idea of starting the season with the World Series in the bag is a joke.
  9. Not just Mauer. Max Scherzer is the only long term $20mil plus/year that has seemed to not be effected by the big bucks in a negative way. Mauer basically slept through his entire contract and relied on his natural talent and simply showing up. Look at Machado and Harper from 2019 on their new teams. Nice numbers but $30mil per year numbers? I don't think so. Plus, where did it get their respective teams? No where near the playoffs and Nats went all the way in part thanks to Harper being gone. You can't convince me that these mega contract free agents don't have a negative influence in the club house. Its only human nature.
  10. Too short to play first base.
  11. I hope that a basic nucleus from the team that won 101 games last year remains. Ideally still Kepler, Buxton, Rosario in the OF, Sano 3rd or 1st, Polanco SS or 2nd, Cruz DH, Arraez somewhere, Garver C or 1st and go from there. Name a team that pitching is not a work in progress so that speaks for itself and never goes away in April. Also, MLB must be looking at the over predominance of the 4 bagger in 2019 so even the baseball itself may make a big difference in 2020.
  12. I am no millenial; I am barely a boomer (all of which "groupism" I detest) as it concludes that behavior is the same based upon when you were born. I do not back into parking spaces unless there is a unique situation that makes it the logical thing to do. Especially if there is someone behind you backing in is very inconsiderate. As far as Gibson goes, it will be very interesting to see how he does under a coaching staff that may harness his talent. Ironic that the Twins supposed urgency to improve their pitching staff loses a pitcher to a team in order to improve their staff. I guess trading Rosario is next.
  13. I wish AJ had been with the Twins for 19 years and that Mauer (and his roster busting salary) had played for the Yankees.
  14. In many ways, first base is a more critical defensive position than third. Used to be if you can catch a thrown ball you can play first. See Dick Stuart, Ted Kluszewski espcially in the pre DH Al where number one qualification was be a power hitter. A first baseman must be able to save the other infielders and the pitcher from bad throws as well as make all kinds of unusual plays themselves including when the pitcher covers the bag. If Sano is a liability at third, he will probably be a liability at first. At least he seems to be most comfortable at third and anything that might effect his hitting is not good.
  15. Good idea.....no luck. Just kidding, of course. We all know that with few exceptions, these coaches are complimentary hires with little impact on actual results. I am sure that Edgar VareLa is a great guy and if the Twins only hit 300 home runs in 2020 we will know who to blame.
  16. Just Googled "Edgar Vareta on hitting", "Edgar Vareta hitting lessons"....no results. He must have a unique approach. Look out AL pitchers.
  17. How about an full season for starters. .270/30/100 being a reasonable result and not a liability at 3b. Play 140+ games, no time on DL/IL. 2020 needs to be the year.
  18. The entire current roster and he would have to bowl for the Twins off season bowling team. Give me a break. Twins are supposed to bust the budget this year so how are they supposed to get Betts next year? They will already have Cole, Strasburg, and Rendon on the payroll and Rosario will already be traded away.
  19. The unlimited quantities of GMs on these boards is truly amazing. The only question that matters is what are Falvey/Levine thinking, hopefully with Rocco's input. It is very doubtful that any major budget busting moves will be made, in my opinion. It is very easy to say how much money other people have to spend. That doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be spent wisely. The only team that won't be trying to improve for 2020 is the Washington Nationals and they will have to make moves just to try to repeat. So far suggestions have to trade Cruz, trade Rosario, sign Rendon, sign Cole/Strasburg, and now upgrade bull pen (for the hundredth time). I say do something unique for major league sports in this day and time. Take the field on opening day 2020 with as close to the 2019 roster as possible that resulted in 101 wins and manager of the year award.
  20. "Yes, the Twins were the ones who fixed him." Tongue in cheek about Lynn. I can't think of any player the Twins have "fixed". Baldelli or someone did change the pitch to contact approach on the mound and to be more aggressive at the plate mental approach but actual improvement in technique was questionable. Buxton and Sano remain a work in progress and Twins have let players go who have flourished elsewhere. Not just for the Twins but for MLB in general, coaching seems to be a ceremonial position and is offered as a reward for ex major leaguers who don't want to leave the game. All you need to know is when someone like Tom Brunansky was hired as the hitting coach under Gardenhire. Again, Gibson seems to be a pitcher who has raw talent but doesn't seem to have command or a clear idea on the mound. Twins seem to be happy to keep sending him out there and just accept the results.
  21. Per sweetmusicviola," My sentiments. 2020 is not the year to start selling off the pieces we've been waiting for for the past decade. That includes Sano and Buxton as well. Sign Cole or Strasburg. And Ryu and have a great rotation. We don't need steps backward." Bang Boom. Couldn't agree more except for the fact that Strasburg and Cole are out of the picture unless either one would agree to the Twins' terms. If the Twins agree to their agents' terms heaven help the Twins. Twins have to be able to find a reliable starting pitcher somewhere. If Pineda comes back and Gibson comes back healthy they could still have a competitive rotation with one sensible addition. 2020 has to be the year that both Buxton and Sano put in an entire season to see what they really can do over 162 games. If either one doesn't show up at Fort Myers ready to go shame on the Twins. Other than that keep as much of the team that won 101 games and go for it.
  22. Hate to throw water on this but .... Ron Gardenhire MOY 2010 2011 63-99 Paul Molitor MOY 2017 2018 78-84 fired Evidently Twins MOYs develop amnesia during the off season. Congratulations on the award but I don't think Baldelli managed the Twins into 307 home runs. I think Rawlings in Costa Rica had more to do with it.
  23. Nothing like great off season fantasy. Can't wait for the reality of the actual 2020 season. Seems like a lot of limitations are being put on the Twins in this thread. Why not sign the entire 2019 All Star roster in one fell swoop? Repeat.... Rendon will never play for the Twins (thank goodness). Arguably the most reliable Twin over the past several seasons is Eddie Rosario and for some reason he is the one constantly being mentioned as trade bate. Alex Gordon a Twin? What is this, stand up comedy? Falvey/Levine definitely get their daily yucks out of this.
  24. Twins do not play in isolation. There is a thing called The Competition. Key to playoffs is winning the Central; wild card a distant second due to too many variables and all it gets you is one game. No reason to expect Detroit, KC and White Sox to be vastly improved. So a simple basic question emerges one more time. How will the Twins stack up against the Indians? Leads to the conclusion...if the Twins allow the Indians to out spend/out recruit them shame on the Twins. Only exception is if the Indians cripple themselves by signing a supposed savior free agent to a huge long term contract which I hope they do because that would be advantage Twins. So can the Twins be smarter in their personnel management than the Indians? That is the question for 2020.
  25. So now the bull pen is an example of great success in 2019? A quick review of posts about the bull pen all during the 2019 season tells a different story. Then they get Dyce and march him out there after being on a plane all day and he proceeds to get shelled. Now the bull pen was a thing of beauty? Kind of interesting. If the Twins had great pitching coaches they would have found a way to harness Gibson's natural talent by now.
