    Good article. Both Milwaukee and Oakland had successful seasons even with starting pitching woes (plenty of injuries on both teams). But both had great bullpens and Milwaukee especially acquired some quality pieces via trades and free agency. Hey, it's always a bit of dice roll, and I give credit to those teams for making the right moves. But can the Twins do likewise? Gotta say I'm less than confident right now.

    That comment makes me think of Delmon Young ... and not in a good way.

    No mention of Nick Punto? Hey, think of all of those other utility infielders that turned into good managers (Ron Washington, Renteria, Alex Cora, and Gardenhire come to mind) and maybe it isn't such a crazy idea.

    I agree, Instead of shelling out big money for a "proven" reliever, I'd prefer they seek some of those "live arms" that could turn into valuable bullpen pieces. Much more cost effective, and will possibly produce better overall results.

    I have to admit not knowing a great deal about these guys, so your article was very informative. That said, none of them do much to excite me.

    Meulens has many pluses in my opinion. The Twins could do much worse in choosing a qualified candidate and one who could potentially help to ignite this team.

    I'm not that comfortable with the idea of Austin at the starting first baseman. Even though it's looking like Mauer will not be back next year, I think the team may need to have a backup plan for 1B. Maybe a free agent signing?

    Here we go again. I guess it was too much to ask to have on off-season with no drama!

    I'm not entirely sold on the idea of signing more free agents to re-stock the bullpen. Sure, another new arm or two would be nice, but there are no guarantees. Look at what Colorado did last winter, signing some top name relievers, only to have most of those guys put up horrible numbers. Granted, they ended up going to the playoffs, but those big signings were not much help.

    Does anyone else think that all this celebrating a "walk off" win is more than a bit over the top? Hey, if the game is meaningful and you have moved into first place or clinched a pennant, then by all means go out and celebrate. But nowadays (I can't remember exactly when this trend to celebrate game-ending hits started, but I don't recall seeing such celebrations a few decades ago) it strikes me as almost childish (then again, we never did that sort of stuff in Little League!) when a last place team celebrates a walk-off win. That said, I think it's good for players to show emotion and pump their fists after knocking in a game-winning run. But to have the whole team jump up and down like kids, throwing water on the runner who scored ... well, it strikes me as just too silly.

    I have wondered about that also. Obviously, it's not our very best prospects that go there each year, at least not usually. Is it strictly a front office decision, or are some players specifically asked? Do any decline?

    Has Griffin Jax finished his military commitment and now free to play ball all year?

    As usual, another very interesting installment in your "Get To Know" series. Keep 'em coming, Seth! Now that the Twins have Costello, they need to seriously think about signing an Abbott for the roster too!

    Gotta agree with that assessment. I just don't think Mauer is manager material, nor do I think he would even want the job.

    Got to admit that I shed a few tears watching those highlights of Mauer in the game today. If this is the end, it was a very classy and moving finale. As a fan, I want him to return for another year or two, But all things consdiered I only hope he makes the decision that is best for him and his family.

    I'm not the biggest Grossman fan, but he certainly had a very good second half. He may be replacement level, but I'm not sure we have a bunch of better options waiting to be called up. And it sure is nice to have a player posting a decent OBP on a regular basis. Of course you also have to put him in the field once a while.

    A pitcher that actually strikes out batters? Hey, let's hold on to him! And I also like the idea of May becoming the team's closer next year. All in all, a very nice game. Effective pitching and timely hits. Wish we had more like that this year.

    Like everyone else I'm disappointed the Buxton has been injured so often and hasn't put up better offensive numbers. But look at the player selected before him in the draft. Carlos Correa of the Astros. After a sizzling start to his career he's battled injuries this year and is only hitting .238. Not the end of the world, but it still shows you that even talented players will have their ups and downs. At this point, i'm just hoping for a healthy Buxton in 2019, and one that can finally put it all together. We need him.

    I have to admit that I like it too. I love the fact that teams are willing to mess with "conventional wisdom" and try something a bit different. Let the "started" pitch an inning or two and then turn it over to another pitcher ... or three. I think it's worth trying.

    I thought the Pineda signing was a savvy one. I'm a patient guy. But I'm also disappointed that he got injured again and couldn't pitch a few games, even out of the bullpen, for the Twins this year. As for next year, can we honestly expect him to contribute? That would be wonderful, but at this point I'm not counting my chickens.

    At this point in time I say no to big contracts and aging free agents. The Twins should try and target the hidden gems out there, players who could thrive if given the opportunity. I'm thinking of players like Max Muncy or Scooter Gennett, or Blake Treinen, or even an older reclamation project like Johnny Venters or Edwin Jackson. Even a Daniel Palka (now with 26 homes!) type can be useful. No sense spending big money on the Logan Morrisons of the world There's gold in them hills! Just have to dig deeper.

    Somewhat off topic, but you mentioned Grossman. I've never had strong feelings either way about him --- I can pretty much take him or leave him --- but he seems to be hitting very well the past month or so, one of the stronger bats in an otherwise weak lineup.

    I think the Twins would have needed Sanchez and a more quality players to have even come within sniffing distance of a playoff spot this year. On that note: Go Braves!

    At least we weren't beaten by the heroics of Drew Butera this time.
