    Completely broken. Not even able to eat innings in a blowout, it appears. I know we carry about 36 pitchers these days, but don't see how Thorpe can be one of them. He has absolutely nothing. What happened?

    Would love those results through 15 games. Hate the contract though. Basically, you get to keep him if he’s ok or worse. If he’s great, he’s gone (with the opt outs). I’d hate to lose him after one great (yet short and relatively meaningless) season.

    He’s a valuable guy. I was happy when we got him...not that concerned about him when the scandal broke (other than the possibility of suspension). And not surprised that he’s playing well now.

    We’re giving 1974 way too much credit here. The Twins were last in the AL in attendance in 1975 and 1976 as well. In 1977 when Carew flirted with .400 and the club challenged for the postseason, attendance was 11th (of) 14. That was the Zenith until Kirby Puckett showed up. A generation of Minnesota sports fans that had grown up on Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva and winning, turned their attention to the Vikings.

    Enough with the “Buxton’s so good in center, he doesn’t have to hit”. It’s. Just. Not. True. He has to at least be within shouting distance of league average. The good news with Buxton is that the last couple of games he’s looked much better. Sano and Garver have looked lost all season. Sano’s probably the only player I’ve ever watched that can hit a ball 120 mph in an at-bat and still manage to finish the game conveying the impression that he’s completely lost at the plate. Arraez will be fine...those that think he’s going to develop power...I don’t see it. To me, he’ll have to rely on high contact rate and BABiP. And the latter has been letting him down. Donaldson, it’s all about his health, so I don’t know what to think with him.

    Has anyone ever seen an NFL, NHL, or NHL game played during the day on a week day (non-holiday)? The only reason it happens at all in MLB, is that the players union has applied pressure relative to travel schedules. And it only happens to the extent necessary to address those situations. Those lights didn’t finally go up at Wrigley for more fans, they went up for more TV $’s.

    The Cubs had one of the First Nation-wide cable networks at the time...and had no lights at their ballpark. The Braves benefitted similarly with TBS...but they played most their week day games at night, like everyone else.

    Good teams play prospects when the prospects are better than the available veterans. Don’t see that being much different in 2020. That means the Twins won’t play prospects as long as health holds out, they’ve established the position they covet in the postseason tournament, or trades are made. Meanwhile, it might be fair to say that OUR center fielder “has a chance to be pretty good”. But, I’m not sure it’s fair to say that of the White Sox new center fielder. Luis Robert shows every indication that he left “pretty good” in the dust probably a couple of years ago. He’s currently batting leadoff for a very good batting order, and accumulating WAR at an astonishing rate.

    The 2020 Pirates make the 2019 Tigers look like the 27 Yankees. If you’re a Pirates fan, covid has a significant silver lining. Yuck.

    True. Remember when we were all worried about the 'small sample' risk of a slump putting the Twins post-season chances in jeopardy? Or the talk of how losing one game would have the equivalent 'standard' impact of losing 3 games? All of it irrelevant. Why? Because we forgot about some new MLB math... 8-team format + massive and pervasive tanking = guaranteed playoffs for any good team. (Unless they are overwhelmed by the virus at some point)...the regular season 2020 Twins will be like the 70's/80's era Soviet Union olympic hockey team going through pool play. The unexpected/unwanted losses against Sweden or Czechoslovakia will happen here and there. And everyone will flip out. But it never matters. It just won't matter.

    Maybe. But, the Yankees demolished the Twins last October will Paxton, Tanaka, and 4 innings of a recovering Severino. I doubt seriously the Yankees feel too worried that, in a theoretical 2020 match-up, they'd have to replace a half-strength Severino with a healthy Gerrit Cole. If it happens, it will be all about the Twins pitching and the ability to at least control that lineup. I think this staff has a better chance. Still, the Yankees look like the best offensive team in baseball, despite the fact that they have their share of guys that haven't heated up yet (Sanchez and Torres).

    Boy....I wonder how the rest of the AL teams trying to make the playoffs feel about how Shelton managed that game against his buddy? Wait...8 teams will make the playoffs, which is more than are actually trying. Never mind. If you take away last night’s outing...against the closest thing to a AAA lineup that you can see in a ‘regular season’ mlb game...Wisler had given up 6 base runners in 3.2 innings, so...I’m not sure I should be exited by Wisler, or horrified by Thorpe. Hate to say it, I’m leaning toward horrified by Thorpe. He had absolutely nothing.

    Like how this thread morphed from who we dislike....more to who we like. It’s mostly matter of perspective and taste. And no two of us are probably exactly the same in that regard. Carneal benefitted from having grown up with radio...and only radio. Was a master at painting the between-pitch picture with his words. He also benefitted from average game lengths 2:15 to 2:30...way less time where nothing was happening. Meanwhile, I like Provus. I love Gladden. I usually watch with the TV muted. Not because I dislike the announcers, but because I don’t need anyone to tell me what I just saw, or read a graphic for me. And it’s too much to expect that people around me are going to stop living their life for the 3 1/2 hours it takes to play a game...day after day.

    In the corporate world we say ‘buzz word’. The promoter calls it a ‘differentiator’ or ‘competitive advantage’...but the truth is the thing is usually simple recycling of a concept that’s been around forever, with maybe a small twist. In your example, scouts/coaches, etc. have been able to distinguish players that give up or create hard contact for about 150 years now. Now we can assign it a number. Buzzword.

    Anyone else find it ironic that the NBA has gone all-in....on Florida!? No, problem really...just don't leave your hotel room (or invite anyone to your hotel room) for a couple of months. About how many NBA players really don't want to do this?...probably right around 90%, I'm guessing.

    We’re 3 days in. This is an exhibition season...and was always destined to be such. By the end of the season...and in the history books, this will be like 1944...only more so. Nothing that happens this year will be taken seriously in retrospect. That is, if this season actually happens. IMO, it beats no baseball. So, I’ll just enjoy games for as long as I can with no expectation that anything like a real season will come to fruition. I think anything else is a recipe for bitter disappointment.

    So, 34 year old Josh Donaldson is going to have a better season than both 25 year old Yoan Moncada and 27 year old Jose Ramirez? I like what you’re thinking!! Although, I think I’d probably like what you’re drinking as well

    I’m not sure I agree with the decision the Canadian government is making regarding the Blue Jays...I don’t...but there is a difference in the scenarios. In the NHL, they’re going with the ‘hub’ approach. A couple of Canadian cities are among the hubs. Incoming teams will have time to quarantine, etc, etc. (Intended to be in response to Ash’s post immediately above)

    Not really. The Twins finished 35-19 without Buxton down the stretch last year. That was about .650 baseball for almost as many games as the entire 2020 season will consist of.

    Buxton? The part-time #9 hitter with the 87 career OPS+? The Twins finished 35-19 without him last year. I’d rather have him...maybe he could realize one (partial) season where he is actually the player so many here perceive him to be...pick up the slack if one of the guys who carried the team last year drops off this year. But for now, I bump Buxton for Garver.

    The OBP was not good (again) last year and the SLG was boosted by an unsustainable doubles rate. He’s still got two things to prove...durability and offense. You’re either doubting or you’re hoping.

    More than likely would need to be in the PCL given travel scenarios. Don’t see it happening any time soon. Also, I don’t see the AAA affiliate being in the region as much of an opportunity to see ‘top’ prospects. Look at the 2019 Red Wings leaders in games played/pitched, and look at the careers of the core players on the major league squad...not many games played at the AAA level (other than rehab). I’d call it more of an opportunity to see ‘emergency veteran depth’ and ‘stalled’ prospects. I’d much much rather have the A+ or AA affiliate. Also, would hate to see independent ball lose the stage that the Saints are providing.

    Huh? He eliminated the bad apples and established the hard line on gambling that still exists today and was absolutely required for the game to survive given it’s vulnerability to gambling and the information and circumstances that existed at the time. And it hurt baseball how? Hurt Joe Jackson maybe...and maybe ‘unfair’ to some, like 1000 rulings that have come down from commissioner’s offices since. But really hard to make a sound argument that it hurt baseball. Would the game’s popularly have come around regardless based on Babe Ruth and the long ball in the 20’s. Probably. At least until the next major gambling scandal came around...which didn’t happen, due in no small part to the hard line that had been drawn. Landis did exactly what he had to do with the Black Sox at that time. Separately, I’ll not enter into an argument for his name remaining on the trophy, given his entire legacy. Like others here, I didn’t even realize his name was on it. And, we’re probably better off without names.

    E Yeah. I thought it was maybe ‘tongue in cheek’. Just the one start...and there was no such thing as a number 5 starter. No one had heard of the term. #4’s didn’t even see regular turns. But, as you say, doesn’t detract from the stories. The members of the ‘65 team still with us are, sadly, fewer and fewer...so, definitely enjoyed seeing this!
