  1. Didn’t do the deal with Polanco last year for him to become a bench player. In a hypothetical scenario where the Twins have Semien on a multi-year deal, Polanco is the everyday 2nd baseman or he’s traded.
  2. Eddie Bane didn’t knock the Gophers out of the CWS...although he beat them. The Gophers were knocked out by USC (Fred Lynn, Roy Smalley) when USC scored 8 runs in the 9th inning of the semifinal to beat the Gophers 8-7. Kinda hard to forget that one if you happened to be over the age of about 10 when it happened.
  3. It was a no-brainer given the arriving options...and the league has further validated this. Having said that, I will miss watching his at-bats. Never knew what would happen. The hands were...and are...amazing. Hands so quick and so strong that he frequently could do considerable damage, even without ever appearing to have a consistent plan or approach.
  4. Huh? The ‘87 champion Twins did exactly that. The ‘88 Twins got rid of an ‘expensive’ Tom Brunansky at age 27...and after a significantly better year than what Rosario just had. Happens all the time...and has everything to do with the overall roster and payroll and little to do with what the player can provide in absolute terms.
  5. There’s a rotation slot and a price I’d give to Odorizzi. They’re both pretty low. Not enough innings and too many pitches...and that’s when he’s NOT getting hit...and when he IS healthy.
  6. There’s another shoe that would need to drop, right? St. Paul would need a league to play in. They’re not a fit geographically with the IL as it currently exists...not by any stretch of the imagination. Especially heading into an era where cost containment in the affiliated minor leagues would seem to be a growing concern. The PCL isn’t as much of a stretch geographically...but, presumably, the PCL isn’t the league looking for a replacement for Rochester. FWIW, I hope the Saints stay independent. It’s a death blow to quality independent ball in the Midwest if they lose St. Paul...and I’d hate to see that.
  7. I’ll take Stroman over Odorizzi 11 out of 10 times. When he’s healthy, he’s at 190-205 innings. When Odorizzi is healthy, he’s at 160. It’s a big difference. Not to mention that the pace of play grinds to a halt with Odorizzi on the mound. Stroman has a more of an attacking style. Having said that, I fully expect Stroman to be more expensive, probably both in terms of AAV and years.
  8. So, we should put in a rule to further reward batters trying to pull and launch every pitch, in every count, in every at-bat, against any pitcher, in every game situation...bolstering the very strategy that’s at the center of the trend toward ever-lengthening at-bats that culminate without a ball being put in play? What could go wrong.
  9. Couldn’t disagree more concerning how great hitters (at least those circa Carew) would do against today’s starters. They would DEMOLISH the #3, 4#, and #5’s used today...and do just fine against the 2’s and most the ones. The legitimate argument that hitting is harder now has do do with the quality, depth, and frequent use of the bullpen, not starting pitching.
  10. I think the point is, it's easy to 'not give up' on a guy when you're not faced with any roster decisions. Even Anderson...despite how it looks now, would have been a relatively risky add to the 40-man AT THAT TIME if the Twins has elected to go that route. For better or worse, Thorpe is already on the roster. We need a reason to remove him...a name. But who? Who's the lefty in the minors that's pushing? The Twins have these left-handers on the 40-man: Rogers, Thielbar, Smeltzer, and Thorpe. The bar for a left-handed pitcher to join (or in Thorpe's case, remain on) this roster is incredibly low.
  11. Huh!? Did I say anything even close to that in my post? No. What I said is, shop him. If someone is in love with his bWAR and/or 119 OPS+ and offers 'significant pieces'...great. I wouldn't be surprised. But, I might be inclined to take the significant pieces...assuming one thinks one or more of the corner outfield prospects is also going to be at least "firmly above league average". My feeling is Kepler's bWAR going back to 2018 is inflated by the turns he took catching other's fly balls in center field for Buxton. Meanwhile, the OPS+ of 119 has value, but isn't anything near elite for a corner outfielder.
  12. I’m fairly certain there are some words in this sentence after “but”...however for some reason, when I look at them, all I can see is Dan Gladden jumping onto home plate.
  13. I know there are more words in this sentence after “but”...for some reason however, when I look at them, all I can see is Jack jumping up and down and waving Gladden in from 3rd base.
  14. In one respect, you signed him so you CAN shop him. If you believe in your corner outfield prospects, you should be shopping him. Doesn’t mean you trade him. I’m not too worried about one bad short-sample year, but I’m not sure he’s a huge needle-mover, either.
  15. Hey! We’ve only averaged one postseason loss per year during this stretch!! And they said this thread would be doom and gloom!
  16. It's interesting to me that the local ratings look decent to good...yet, the league struggled mightily on the national broadcasts, for the most part. Don't know what that means. At some point, they need to figure out the attendance issue, IMO. It's hard for me to imagine that continued rapid revenue growth is sustainable long-term in the face of shrinking attendance. At some point, you run out of customers, even while the platforms proliferate. FWIW, despite the headline numbers for the new Turner and Fox contracts, in reality they reflected a slowing of the rate of growth for those revenue streams.
  17. Absolutely zero evidence to suggest...as the author seems to be trying hard to do...that Buxton's post season performance (or lack thereof) was impacted by the late-season HBP. Zero. To me, both Buxton/Donaldson injuries are equally concerning in terms of 2021 as there doesn't seem to be a legitimate alternative in either case.
  18. Near the top of my list would be getting a quality ever-day major league center fielder.
  19. I'm not a 'curses' guy...but, still I think there's a legitimate point to be made with the Ortiz topic. When the Twins did what they did in 1987, it came on the heals of no post-season appearances for 17 years, no post-season series wins since...ever. And a streak of seven straight post-season losses. Kirby Puckett certainly didn't change that history on his own. It takes more than one guy to step up to win multiple playoff series in a given year. But maybe it only takes one guy to flip the pressure relief valve, and set things in motion. Ortiz maybe could have been that guy for the Twins...certainly in 2006 against Oakland? Maybe even in one of those Yankee series when it seemed we were completely overmatched? I believe in that guy. And it's looking like the Twins don't have him.
  20. I guess we could argue whether these games (against this opponent) should have been tight in the first place...but for the most part, you're going to have to win close games in the post-season. And, yes, it won't matter if you don't find players that can make plays, but Baldelli was truly horrible. Shockingly, really. No confidence that anything but a truly dominant team can win playoff series with his approach. Did someone tell Rocco the format was pool play? It's a three-game series, Rocco. Ride your best players, ride your best pitchers, and get out of the way.
  21. It's possible to agree that nobody deserves what appears to have happened, especially based on that person's race...and still disagree with some of the politics that spills out in the aftermath. It's also possible to disagree on the nature and scope of the underlying causes and solutions. Self-righteous and myopic grandstanding will hurt, not help. The insinuation that those that don't want to deal with it on a baseball website or disagree with some actions in the aftermath...the insinuation that necessarily those people are the unenlightened deniers, to your immense wokeness...is exactly the kind of myopic grandstanding to which I refer. Is this more important than baseball? Yep. Ideally, everyone should spend 2 hours studying/considering how they think the social ills of our country could be improved upon and how best to take action to that end...for every 1 hour they spend on this site. But, I come here...to this website, for baseball. I hope that sentence didn't make anyone feel uncomfortable.
  22. And yet, we’d have a better team if Lynn replaced Odorizzi.
  23. Right handed hitting outfielders, not infielders. Specifically a right handed guy that can also play center field because counting on Buxton at this point amounts basically to negligence. Does Kendrick push Cruz to the bench...or Sano? He’s not playing any 2nd base or outfield at this point in his career. Not for the Nationals or any team seriously trying to compete.
  24. “Jose finished his night with a line of 5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 6 K -- it certainly wasn’t his best effort, but it wasn’t a terrible outing either and he gave his team a chance to win, which is all you can really ask for.” Cleveland has one of the worse offenses in all of baseball. Command was horrible pretty much the entire game. A ton of base runners, 105 pitches to get through 5.2. I realize it’s just one game, and it’s Major League Baseball, but if you can’t ask for more, let’s drop him to the three or four spot in the rotation. Certainly for a series against a playoff team with a good lineup.
