It's come to this for the Twins. They're going to have to make due with only 12 pitchers, just two more than what many teams in the league used to get along with even after the advent of the 5 man rotation, and one more than many use now.

Almost everyone will use at least 12 pitchers. It sometimes seems stupid to me, but that is the way the game is now. Setup guys only work in the eighth, closers only work the ninth, and many clubs employ a specialist. That said, the Twins added three reputed innings-eaters to their rotation and have no restrictions that I know of on any of their pitchers. That being the case, twelve pitchers should be plenty.

12 pitchers you say? Scary times for Gardy. Scarier times still, for Pressly, Tonkin and T-Bar (maybe only 1 of 3 makes it, with Diamond as an RP?).

 

Meanwhile, hope in the wind with 13 position players, for:

 

Parmelee/Bartlett (both have now actually played some CF in ST, Gardy loves multiple utility guys), Hermann/Pinto, Hicks/Presley. 3 of 5 should make the bench joining Escobar, plus one of the two CF's being the starter. Did Bartlett's CF "Say Hey Kid" catch the other day cinch him the back-up role in CF? He's now played every non-battery position this spring except 1B and Groundscrewman. It's apparently still not known for sure if Bartlett has an opt-out on March 31. After trading Morneau to get Presley, it seems unlikely they would DFA him, no matter how uninspiring his play has been. I think they try to send Parmelee through waivers.

I'm starting to see why Gardy was so angry at LaVelle for tweeting that Gibson was going to be the 5th starter. I'm starting to see a different conclusion here. I seems to me that the only thing that has been announced is that Deduno is going to start the year in the bullpen. With Gardy saying today that they're only going to carry 12 pitchers, it seems they may not think they need to carry a 5th starter in the early weeks because of the off dates. They can always do the Rochester shuttle when they finally need a 5th. If that means Gibson can stay sharp starting at Rochester, that's probably good news.

Maybe, or with the first 15 games being played in cold weather cities in this weird weather year, with rain/snow outs maybe they won't need a 5th starter at all the first three weeks. I'm just trying to figure out why Gardy had a conniption fit when LaVelle named Gibson as the 5th starter. The only statement the Twins have made is that Deduno will start the season in the BP, and the writers built a scenario around that. Makes it uncomfortable if they have to tell Gibson he is actually going down.

 

I don't know what is going to happen, but I do know this. Gardy likes a big bullpen, especially in the early going when pitchers aren't fully stretched out yet, and I don't know the last time he has had only 7 to work with. Seems like enough to me, but Gardy sees a bullpen differently than I do. Secondly, I'm not sure they want Gibson sitting on the bench with a chance of starting one time before April 20 when he can be getting regular work down in Rochester. They could shuttle him on April 6, if needed, and then consider promoting him on the 20th. We'll have to see how this plays out.

If memory serves, the Twins have never started the season with a 13 man pitching staff, and since the advent of 5 man rotations have rarely started the season leaving the fifth starter off the roster (2010, I think).

You are correct about last year, USAF...5 "starters" (including Worley, Devries and Hendricks...ouch!) and 7 relievers went north. But in 2012 they broke camp with 4 starters (Pavano, Liriano, Hendricks and Blackburn) and 8 relievers. Gardy could go either way this year.

It might be that there isn't a true #5 starter--simply a set of long-relief pitchers who spot start as needed. This allows flexibility for SP selection for that "5th spot" without having to make a lenghty explanation why one guy started instead of a different guy.

I read that a big company was upset with a unconfirmed information leak. I've heard rumors that other big companies have reacted the same way.

This was an easy win, turned into a minor debacle. It's not like we're talking about Worley. Once LENIII's leak on Gibson appeared, the inner circle needs to get on the same page (I assume they have each other's phone numbers) and in this case, immediately own it: "Yes, Gibson will be our fifth starter. He's had a great spring and we're confident he is ready to contribute," said Antony.

 

Done.

That sounds right. The "expected rainout" excuse for starting with four starters feels a little off to me.

I think what the previous poster said was "minor debacle". An organization tends to wish to jealously guard and control the "message" intended for public consumption- and a decision such as this does have a significant effect on the players and agents involved.

 

Judging by how publicly upset that the Twins management has been in reaction to this development, I'd say the TD posters were not the only ones who cared.

Sounds like the Twins thought they had an agreement about what to print and when to print it--and it got printed "too soon".
