JB_Iowa Verified Member Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Rhett Bollinger @RhettBollingerPedro Florimon had his appendix removed last night and is expected to be out two weeks.
D. Hocking Verified Member Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 When you are worried about maintaining a job and competition, having this kind of set-back now has to be stressful. I feel bad for him. I know they have come a long way with some of those surgeries and recovery time, but its not like he is going to be feeling 100% when those two weeks are up, and he will be behind everyone else.
JB_Iowa Verified Member Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 Don't know how much stock to put in this but Gardy is trying to reassure him: Mike Berardino @MikeBerardino 9m No need for Florimon to rush back, though. "He's our shortstop," Gardy said. Bartlett is here to try to make the club. On the bright side, he can spend a little time with his new daughter (assuming she made the trip south).
JB_Iowa Verified Member Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 CORRECTION: Rhett Bollinger @RhettBollinger 4m Also to correct an earlier tweet, Pedro Florimon will have his appendix removed this afternoon. But it's arthroscopic so he'll miss 14 days.

That is a bit interesting that Gardy mentioned Bartlett but not Escobar. It seems like either Gardy isn't interested in Escobar at SS, or Berardino specifically asked (but failed to mention) if this would open up the possibility of Bartlett stealing the job.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Diamond quit while doing soft toss before his bullpen today. Like retired? That seems pretty rash, but it sure helps narrow down the 5th rotation spot.

Good analysis; I try to not put much stock into quotes unless I can hear/see the exact question that was asked.

Jeremy Nygaard Twins Daily Contributor Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 @MikeBerardino: Scott Diamond, via email, tells me he's "perfectly fine ... no issues whatsoever today." So we can put that one to rest. #mntwins
cmathewson Provisional Member Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Good analysis; I try to not put much stock into quotes unless I can hear/see the exact question that was asked. I read it as correcting an earlier assertion by Berardino that starting shortstop was an open competition. He based that claim on an interview with Florimon. Unlike last year, Florimon wasn't told the job was his. Apparently, Bartlett is trying to beat out Escobar for the utility job.
Halsey Hall Verified Member Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Well that's good. My buddy watching him said he just stopped throwing and walked to the catcher and quit. He must of assumed an injury, but probably just not his day to throw pb. I'll watch what I put out there more closely!

I agree that is most likely the scenario. Of course that brings up a pet peeve of this "new school" reporting. Twitter doesn't exactly lend itself to encapsulating the full atmosphere of an interview or even a simple exchange. Maybe I just don't like change, but I don't care much for this kind of journalism. To me this exchange should be in a forum where the author is able to present the full discourse: When asked if Florimon's injury may open the door for Bartlett to take his starting job, Gardenhire refuted the possibility stating, "He's our shortstop." Gardenhire further explained that Bartlett's goal was simply to make the team. 140 characters, give me a break. Don't be a teenager.

PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Diamond quit while doing soft toss before his bullpen today. Will you be making Spring Reports this year? My memory is tricky guy, but I recall you doing such for DTFC back in the day; and your reports were always more meaty than anything the media attempted.
