The Minnesota Twins' dwindling pitching depth took another hit Sunday.

The Twins placed right-handed starter Bailey Ober on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right elbow. Right-hander Mike Paredes had his contract selected from Triple-A St. Paul and will be making his MLB debut. Also, the Twins called up Travis Adams and optioned fellow right-handed reliever John Klein to St. Paul.

Ober was tagged for eight runs in 4⅔ innings of Saturday's 10-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He becomes the seventh Twins pitcher to go on the IL this season. Ober has been uneven this season, including giving up three homers Saturday and seven long balls in his last three starts. He has a 4.59 ERA with a 6.4% walk rate and 16.4% strikeout rate in his 12 starts this season, which includes a shutout.

Paredes is an 18th-round draft choice in 2021 out of San Diego State and has pitched for Double-A Wichita and Triple-A St. Paul this season. Between the two stops, he has made 13 appearances, including 10 starts, and thrown 48⅔ innings, walking nine and striking out 54.

Adams is making his third trip up from St. Paul this month after beginning the season on the 15-day injured list with a strained right triceps. Adams has appeared in seven games, throwing 10 innings with five walks and 12 strikeouts for a 7.20 ERA. The bullpen was in need of a fresh arm.

Klein went two innings Saturday after being called up earlier in the day. He didn't allow a run, although he walked three and gave up a hit. Klein made his MLB debut this month and has now appeared in three games, allowing two runs in 4⅓ innings.

I hadn't heard of Paredes until he was promoted to AAA, we are really delving into the farm system's pitching depth. His numbers in AAA were pretty good, but I don't think anyone would have guessed he'd be pitching in the majors at this point.

Definitely a fast promotion, but of the guys currently in St. Paul, he had the numbers to justify it. He had a 2.70ERA in may through 23.1 innings with 25 strikeouts and only 5 walks. His last outing was one of his best outings, especially at a higher level with 5 innings and 7Ks with most of those coming from whiffs. Obviously, this is likely just to cover Ober on the IL and Adams might be the one that stays up when that IL stint is over

Paredes has always been a solid arm, The main knock has been his fastball velocity and K rate.  He never had an ERA much over 3.00 his entire minor league career. They kept him at levels far longer than they needed to and used him as a stopper out of the pen in several leagues.  When starters went down they would use him as a starter.  He's just been perhaps an unspectacular arm, but very reliable arm.  Because of that and being an 18th round pick he has never received any top 30 love despite his really good performance since becoming pro.

I feel like I have been high man on him for a while.  Not sure that he will be a great player, but certainly more reliable than a lot of other arms I've seen.  Call me crazy but I really think he could be a mid rotation arm in the Big leagues.  I think he'll be an equal or better arm than SWR and he can come out of the pen as well.

It makes me wonder if his recent performance was one reason they were willing to move on from SWR,  They are the same age. About the same level ceiling and yet Paredes has three option years left and  more versatility. Personally I still think they could have kept Sim so it feels like something else might be going on as well, but all things being equal Paredes should be a good replacement even if he never made a top 30.

I have to admit that I knew next to nothing about Paredes. In fact, when I saw his name I had to do some research just to find out which Paredes it was that we were using! But it DOES seem like he has earned the promotion, albeit much quicker than expected. Your comments make me feel more confident in his ability to succeed.

We'll see.  It is always a big jump so hard to know.  He does throw strikes and can miss bats.  Hopefully he's as good as I think he is.
